NWS/OSTI Modeling Program Grants

The NWS/Office of Science and Technology Integration (OSTI) funds research projects through a competitive call for proposals to support NOAA’s development of the community-based, coupled, comprehensive Earth modeling system, the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The UFS is designed to provide more accurate forecast guidance through operational numerical weather prediction applications. These applications span local and global domains, and predictive time scales from sub-hourly to seasonal. Proposals that are at NOAA Readiness Levels (RLs) 4 through 7 and therefore demonstrate potential to transition to operations are highly encouraged in this competitive call. 2022 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)

In FY22, The NWS/OSTI Modeling Program awarded 3 projects under Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO) -  NOAA-NWS-NWSPO-2022-2007072  with individual award amounts ranging from $100,000 to $300,000 per year for up to three years (for more details see, FY22 Call for Proposals). The period of performance of these projects is September 1, 2022 - August 31, 2025. The total award value is approximately $2M .

Additionally, the  Joint Competition to Advance Process Understanding and Representation of Precipitation in Models by NOAA OAR/CPO/CVP – NWS/OSTI/Modeling Program Division was announced within the CPO’s FY22 NOFO. The  Focus Area B awarded one project with a value of approximately $749K. The period of performance is September 1, 2022 - August 31, 2025.
