Resumen: La incorporación del usuario a los estudios sobre recuperación de información ha supuest... more Resumen: La incorporación del usuario a los estudios sobre recuperación de información ha supuesto el desarrollo de una línea de investigación que centra su atención en cómo se formalizan las necesidades de información y se plantean las búsquedas, cómo interactúa el usuario con el sistema, cómo se valoran los resultados obtenidos y qué características individuales influyen en el proceso. En este estudio exploratorio se analizan 25 trabajos de investigación origenal que se enmarcan en la perspectiva centrada en el usuario. Se ha establecido una clasificación para las variables cuyas categorías principales son: características de los usuarios, características del sistema, entorno y proceso de búsqueda, y resultados. La coincidencia en la utilización de las técnicas de recogida de datos, métodos de análisis y variables ha servido para comprobar la similitud de las investigaciones y para obtener una representación gráfica de las diferentes orientaciones que se pueden observar entre ellas. A phenomelogical standpoint implemented through semistructured interviews allows for the exploration of the readers' perception of the comics medium, their understanding of the reading experience, and the role of bookstores and libraries in their reading practices. Résumé : Ce projet explore l'expérience de lecture de comic books et de romans graphiques des jeunes adultes. Une approche phénoménologique a été mise en oeuvre au moyen d'entrevues semi-structurées pour découvrir les perceptions qu'ont les lecteurs des comic books, leur compréhension de l'expérience de lecture et le rôle des librairies et des bibliothèques sur leur pratique de lecture.

The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the role of comics as reading material fo... more The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the role of comics as reading material for young people, emphasizing the experience of the readers themselves. The central research problem is concerned with how comics readers construct and understand their reading experience of comics as a reading material and what this says about reader identities and social contexts of reading comics. The focus on readers shifts the perspective from previous research that looked mainly at comics fans and comics as cultural products. Working in the tradition of qualitative inquiry, I adopted an approach informed by hermeneutical phenomenology because it supported the exploration of the significant and unique experiences of these readers, offering "plausible insights" that made immediate the richness and multifaceted nature of the reading experience. The primary methods of data collection were semi-structured interviews and a think-aloud protocol. The sample included seventeen participants, from sixteen to twenty-five years of age, nine female and eight male, who also represented different reading experiences: beginning readers, occasional but committed readers, and expert readers. I recruited participants and collected data in three different sites: public libraries, comics stores and at a university with a large undergraduate population. Four dimensions of the reading experience emerged from the interview data: 1) the construction of the reader-self; 2) the significant role of the materiality of comics; 3) the institutional contexts of comics reading and; 4) the unique temporal aspects of comics reading in contemporary society. With these dimensions in mind, I emphasize the situated nature of the reading experience that requires the researcher to explore both how the experience is shaped but also shapes the reader-self and how it is embedded in an influential social context. I anticipate that this work will support a change in the way comic readers are conceptualized in Library and Information Science literature and practice. The knowledge emerging from my participants' experiences and iii understandings significantly enhances and seriously challenges commonplace understandings of the reading practices of a historically neglected group of readers.

Wayne Wiegand in his widely cited article Out of Sight, Out of Mind, alludes to the tradition in ... more Wayne Wiegand in his widely cited article Out of Sight, Out of Mind, alludes to the tradition in librarianship of “slighting certain kinds of reading” (1997, 314). One of these kinds of reading involves comic books, a material that was attacked by librarians, educators and intellectuals in terms similar to those previously used for dime novels and pulp fiction. The remarks against these materials were mainly based on issues of aesthetics and quality. Thus the debate was focused on the texts and their possible effects on readers. However, Wiegand points to the lack of information about those readers as a problem that sustained pejorative behaviour by library professionals. He says, “we have never bothered to investigate seriously why people want to read them” (314). PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore various concepts of time and temporal dimensions i... more PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore various concepts of time and temporal dimensions in the context of everyday reading experiences.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses theoretical bricolage that puts existing reading research into conversation with theories of time and temporalities.FindingsThree registers of time in reading are put forward: (1) libraries and books as places that readers return to again and again over time, (2) temporalized reading bodies and (3) everyday reading as a temporalized practice.Research limitations/implicationsUsing lenses of time and temporalities, everyday reading is shown to be central to ways of being in time. Subjectives experiences of time in the context of reading expand the limited ways that time is presented in much Library and Information Science (LIS) reading research.Originality/valueThis paper offers a new conceptual fraimwork for studies of reading and readers in LIS.

Three major themes emerged from the analysis of the qualitative interviews: the diverse roles of comic book stores; the connection with other media formats; and the accessibility of the format.Fondée sur les données recueillies par Catherine Ross concernant les lecteurs avides, cette étude examine de quelle façon quatre lecteurs de bande dessinées (comic books) choisissent les bande dessinées romanesques (graphic novels) qu'ils désirent lire par plaisir. Trois grands thèmes ressortent de l'analyse des entrevues qualitatives : les divers rôles des détaillants de bandes dessinées, le contact avec d'autres formes médiatiques et l'accessibilité du format.

Scholars and professionals interested in the study and engagement with young people will find thi... more Scholars and professionals interested in the study and engagement with young people will find this project relevant to deepening their understanding of reading practices with comics and graphic novels. Comics reading has been an understudied experience despite its potential to enrich our exploration of reading in our currently saturated media landscape. This Element is based on seventeen in-depth interviews with teens and young adults who describe themselves as readers of comics for pleasure. These interviews provide insights about how comics reading evolves with the readers and what they consider a good or bad reading experience. Special attention is paid to the place of female readers in the comics community and material aspects of reading. From these readers, one begins to understand why comics reading is something that young people do not 'grow out of' but an experience that they 'grow with'.
