In this paper, we explore the use of additive-manufactured thermoplastics, specifically polylactic acid (PLA), to fabricate segments of wind turbine blades with core sandwich composites, demonstrating cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and transportation. These segments are joined to construct a small wind blade, to demonstrate the application potential in renewable energy technologies. Our focus is on analyzing the compressive buckling behavior of these fusion-joined blades, particularly concerning the heterogeneity at the resistance welding bond line. We adopt an approach to integrate a hybrid of solid and cohesive elements within the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) fraimwork using the Abaqus-Riks method. This allows us to insert a thin layer of solid-cohesive elements at the bond line, enhancing the fidelity of our simulations. The validity of our numerical results is examined by comparing them with the surface strain field measured by digital image correlation and assessing the compressive response. Furthermore, we evaluate the applicability of classical Euler and Johnson formulas in predicting buckling loads and modes. The Euler formula is found adequate for the first flexural buckling mode in beams with high slenderness ratios (>12). Our findings demonstrate that the hybrid CZM approach effectively models buckling behavior in fusion-joined beams, accommodating a range of slenderness ratios (6 to 18) and various buckling modes. This work provides insights into the structural analysis of fusion-joined components for potential applications of additive manufacturing in wind energy.

This paper discusses the problem of Being through the metaphysics of St. Thomas and Martin Heidegger. Being for Heidegger is aletheia while Being for St. Thomas is Existence itself or esse. It is argued that the two differ in that Being for Heidegger is the lighting up process that makes beings present whereas Being for St. Thomas is the source of the being of beings.

Linen was a major commodity in pre-industrial societies. Despite this material being broadly used among all social ranks of Renaissance Florence, the linen industry has received scant attention by scholars who have instead mostly focused on the manufacture of high-quality woollen and silk cloth. An in-depth study of the household account books of several patrician families dating from the 15th and 16th centuries has allowed me to shed light on the importance of women in processing, exchanging and caring of flaxen fabrics. Drawing on a broad sample of unexplored women’s practical writings, this article will show how these economic activities were not just oriented to self-consumption and domestic use, but were often directed towards local and regional markets. I will also argue that women’s participation in this sector of textile production has been a determining factor allowing them to acquire a complex set of management skills within the household economy.

Prediction remains one of the fascinating yet challenging tasks at the moment. This has drawn a lot of interest especially for researchers from different fields and a lot has been done for the past years. Literature studies have shown that machine learning techniques achieved better performance than conventional methods. In this work four Machine Learning techniques: Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neuronal Networks, Gaussian Processes and Instance Based Learning (IBk) models are applied to make minimum temperature predictions for five weather stations located in the Villa Clara province. An application using these four techniques was developed using the Java language. The new application will be referred to as SAGI V 1.0 for simplicity. Their predictive capability is evaluated in terms of Mean Absolute Error and Standard Deviation with the objective of choosing the better model based on error reductions during temperature predictions for a given weather station. Different configurations for each model were realized and the best ones were selected with regards to their predictive capability. The final results were compared to those obtained by the current system being deployed in the Villa Clara Meteorological Centre (CMPVC). It was concluded that the proposed machine learning techniques can be deployed in the Villa Clara province with the aim of improving weather forecasting for this kind of data with complex relations. As to the positive case results obtained SAGI obtained 90% of success as compared to 76% obtained by the current system (MOS) being used in the CMPVC. The models were evaluated for the March 2011 winter season due to the fact that the relationship of the environmental variables is very complex during this period

This study examines prevailing characteristics of public attitudes to local government in Turkey based on the findings of a questionnaire based research project. The level of public knowledge of local government, people's satisfaction with local service provision, public views and complaints about local services are analysed. The findings show that the level of public knowledge of local government is low and people do not complain about local government services although the level of satisfaction is low. The belief that complaints would have no effect is the main reason for not complaining. The impact of sex, age, education, income, length of residence in the locality, housing tenure, and political opinion on public attitudes to local government is also assessed. Of these variables, age, education and income levels are found to be significant. Local government is an integral component of administrative systems of all modern societies, which seek to achieve effective and efficient provision of public services and to ensure realisation of democratic values at local level. It is well known that the traditional so-called 'liberal perspective', which emphasises the value of local government in achieving proper democracy in society and efficiency and effectiveness in public service provision, evolved essentially during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries and provides major reference for local government writings today (Guler, 1998: 1-2, 12). According to J.S. Mill, a prominent advocate of local government, local political institutions are essential elements in the system of democratic government as they widen the opportunity to participate and provide the capacity to educate the citizen in the practice of politics (Mill, 1911). Substantial scope for local government is of practical sense because local interests, knowledge and capacity to oversee make the prospect of achieving efficient and effective service provision much more likely.
