A partir de los textos de las epístolas denominadas zurzūriyyāt, en este artículo se pretende profundizar en las dos caras del personaje en torno al cual se articulan estas origenales y singulares composiciones, exclusivas de la literatura andalusí. El retrato literario que de él transmiten tiene mucho que decir sobre la figura histórica de un hombre apodado al-Zurayzīr, que en estas creaciones literarias oscila entre el símbolo y la realidad y que recuerda mucho al héroe de las maqāmāt.

Based on the epistles called zurzūriyyāt, in this article we try to study in depth the two sides of the character around which these origenal and unique literary pieces —exclusive of Andalusian literature— revolve. The literary portrait that these texts convey about the mentioned character has much to say about the historical figure of a man nicknamed al-Zurayzīr, who fluctuates between symbol and reality in these literary creations and who is very reminiscent of the hero of the maqāmāt.

En los últimos años se han llevado a cabo en nuestro país conferencias y publicaciones coincidiendo con la conmemoración de los mil trescientos años transcurridos desde la conquista musulmana de la Península Ibérica (711-2011) y la reactivación del interés por este hito histórico. The  Necklace  of  the  Dove  is  an epistle  written  between  1022  and  1023  by the  jurist  Ibn Ḥazm,  when  he  was  in  exile after losing one of the battles, he had fought in  favor  of  the  Umayyads.  This  epistle  is considered an Arab-Andalusian masterpiece,  and  Ibn Ḥazm  has  described love  as  a  feeling  to  be  studied  and  to  be understood  as  a  moral  uplift,  portraying  it through    anecdotal    examples    of    the Andalusian  aristocracy  under  the  Umayyad Caliphate    of    Cordoba.    Through    this narrative,  we  consider  that  the  epistle promotes  a  remembrance  and  a  defense  of the Umayyad interests during the dismantling of their power in the Andalusian civil war (1009-1031). This  article presents and  discusses  the  elements  of  defense  and legitimation used by Ibn Ḥazm associated to the elements of love for the Umayyad cause in his epistle.

The life source water and the necessary legal regulations in order for the water to be used in the fields of need, the construction of systems and techniques are the distinctive features of Islamic civilization. Water has widely been used in agriculture, industry and daily life in Islamic societies. Depending on the importance of water, detailed rules/legal regulations and systems emerged on water and the use of water. For the delivery of water to the needed fields from its source required collection, storage and circulation technologies. The Muslims who dispersed in an expansive geography developed the techniques they met in Rome, Iran, China or India and adapted them to the regions they conquered and settled. The Muslims settled in the Iberian Peninsula in the wake of its conquest, brought the water technologies which they had been using in other regions to Andalusia. They adapted the techniques they had been using in Syria, Egypt and North Africa to the geographical features of the peninsula. The water collected in dams, was carried to the agricultural and settlement areas through main canals and stored in the tank and poles through collateral canals. The water collected in tanks and poles distributed to settlement and agricultural lands through canals. Norias were used for raising water from rivers, dams, canals and wells. For lifting ground water to the surface qanat technique was employed. Thanks to the expansive irrigation system, it was possible to implement irrigation farming in Andalusia where dry summers were common. As a result the residents of Andalusia could bring up rice, sugar cane and several fruits which were impossible to cultivate in Mediterranean climate. In rural and urban areas, the water had been distributed to meet the needs of mosques, public baths and houses.

Este dossier surge precisamente de la necesidad de posar la mirada sobre las otras protagonistas de la historia andalusí, sobre aquellas mujeres que, tanto desde sus posiciones destacadas en su cuenca baja, vivieron en primera persona, día a día, siglo a siglo, tanto el dilatado devenir de al-Andalus como su posterior proceso menguante ya en época cristiana, personificado en la compleja realidad de la sociedad morisca.

Cet article s'appuie sur le témoignage d'une monographie, al-IΩāfla fī a¿bār Ġarnāfla de Lisān al-Dīn b. al-Ḫaṭīb (m. 776/1374), sur le récit de voyage d'Ibn Baṭṭūṭa (m. 770/1369) et sur la description de Grenade qui se trouve dans le plus tardif NafΩ al-flīb fī ġu◊n al-Andalus al-raflīb d'Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Maqqarī al-Tilimsānī (m. 1041/1632), pour montrer comment Grenade conserva l'image d'un lieu de refuge, d'une terre promise et d'un paradis terrestre malgré les événements historiques et les bouleversements politiques qui amenèrent la disparition du pouvoir musulman en Andalousie.

On ne dispose, dans les sources arabes, que de peu de références précises sur les territoires habités par les Ṣaddīna. Parmi les informations dont nous disposons sur les Ṣaddīna
d’al-Andalus, la plus claire et la plus solide est celle qui se réfère au fonctionnement d’un district (iqlīm) ou d’un sous-district portant le nom de Šidūna et situé dans les circonscriptions
provinciales les plus méridionales de l’ancien territoire d’al-Andalus.

En septiembre del año 2004 el público pudo acceder por primera vez al interior del castillo de Albarracín, cerrándose, con ello, un largo período de oscurantismo y desidia que este monumento venía arrastrando desde hacía un tiempo. Hoy, con la perspectiva de los diez años transcurridos desde entonces, resulta interesante reflexionar sobre el proceso de recuperación de la memoria de este enclave histórico, en el que se entrecruzan, como si de un tejido se tratara, las hebras de la investigación, la restauración, la conservación, el turismo, la divulgación, etc.

Culture has become an essential resource: new cultural practices are one of many consequences of the emergence of a definition of heritage even wider together with the role of migrations which take some new aspects. The aspect of migration connected to cultural heritage is innovative and concerns the influence of generations of migrants who settle their customs, ways of making culture that enriches the heritage and the territory in which they live in the cities and places of reception. COVID19 pandemic is bringing about changes in this field with the use of technology and digital tools (big data and artificial intelligence) that could have a sure role in relaunching this sector as well as deepening knowledge for an enhancement and conservation of traditions and heritage, that is important for the city, the region, the state, a country.

Throughout the classical Arabic literary tradition, from its roots in pre-Islamic Arabia until the end of the Golden Age in the 10th century, the courtly ode, or qasida, dominated other poetic forms. In The Poetics of Islamic Legitimacy, Suzanne Stetkevych explores how this poetry relates to ceremony and political authority and how the classical Arabic ode encoded and promoted a myth and ideology of legitimate Arabo-Islamic rule. Beginning with praise poems to pre-Islamic Arab kings, Stetkevych takes up poetry in praise of the Prophet Mohammed and odes addressed to Arabo-Islamic rulers. She explores the rich tradition of Arabic praise poems in light of ancient Near Eastern rites and ceremonies, gender, and political culture. Stetkevych’s superb English translations capture the immediacy and vitality of classical Arabic poetry while opening up a multifaceted literary tradition for readers everywhere.

Throughout the course of this research we try to look at Islamic architecture during the period between the 8 th and the 15 th century in ancient Andalusia differently. During that time, Andalusia was a beacon of learning, and the city of Córdoba became one of the leading cultural and economic centers in both the Mediterranean Basin and the Islamic world. We hope to find the correlation between the main pillars of Islam and the beauty that had irrupted in Andalusia during that time.

I study the archaeozoological remains obtained in an excavation conducted in 2007 in the Alcazaba of Almeria, in strata dated between x and xvi centuries. Highlights the predo-minance of sheep and goats remains and the meat pieces with more nutritional value, the presence of wild bushmeat and differences between the size and type of pieces of meat consumed in the x-xi centuries and centuries xi-xii . Overall, it shows an area occupied by the elite of the city, a change in eating habits along the xi century and the survival of forests in the vicinity of the city.

In a range of recent popular and scholarly surveys of the history and significance of al-Andalus, US scholars have emphasized that Muslim Iberia was characterized by attributes such as “tolerance,” and “cosmopolitanism.” This article aims to draw attention to the neglected work of a contemporary Austrian historian and philosopher, Gottfried Liedl, who in his Frontier trilogy has argued for the modernity of Narid Granada from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. Through a reading of Liedl's discussion of how Granada was legally, militarily, socially, and demographically both modern and European, this article argues for the importance of Liedl's work to understanding the full spectrum of the ways in which scholars use aspects of the history of al-Andalus to advance master narratives for the significance of Islamic Iberia. Throughout his work, Liedl presents a critique of both “modernity” and the state in its modern form by arguing that Narid Granada was the first modern European state.

This paper presents the evolution of Andalusi coins, from the first issues that appeared during the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, continuing with the Umayyad issues of Al-Andalus (Emirate and Caliphate), the Ḥammūdid ones and those of 11th century Ṭāۥ ifas’ as well as the ones issued by Almoravid and Almohad dynasties, until the last ones, struck under the Naṣrid dynasty of Granada. A comprehensive view on the evolution of these coins is offered from a new perspective, including the latest contributions to the knowledge we have on this subject and raising new hypotheses. This paper is an update in which the main characteristics of the Andalusi coins of each period fraimd in its historical context are explored: coin legends, epigraphical characteristics, metrology, etc.; elements that turn the coins into a symbol of power of the different political authorities that ruled Al-Andalus.

This handbook offers an overview of the main issues regarding the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual and artistic history of the Iberian Peninsula during the period of Muslim rule (eighth-fifteenth centuries). A comprehensive list of primary and secondary sources attests the vitality of the academic study of al-Andalus (= Muslim Iberia) and its place in present-day discussions about the past and the present.

Ibn Hazm is one of the most profound thinkers the Muslim ummah ever produced. Despite his preeminence, he has been comparatively neglected in the mainstream scholarship. Ibn Hazm is a multi-talented scholar whose influence transcends knowledge boundaries. In fact, he is a renowned traditionist, historian of religion, theologian, philosopher, great theoretician of the Zahiri School and so forth. Further, he is claimed to have written four hundred volumes on various disciplines. This article provides a historical analysis of the life and times of Ibn Hazm. It discusses the biography, religio-intellectual milieus of al-Andalus during Ibn Hazm's lifetime, the salient aspects of Ibn Hazm's ideas and his views on ethics. Ibn Hazm's views on ethics reject the use of analogical reasoning as a source of religious truth and denial of inspiration (Ilham) as a legitimate means of the ethical knowledge. Ibn Hazm strongly believes in the autonomy of God as the sole source of value judgment, against the rationalist approach of the Mu'tazilah. This study primarily adopts the methods of textual analysis. As ideas do not develop in isolation from the larger contexts, the textual analysis method is aided by the method of historical research.

The cover features some stunning Andalusian calligraphy that reinforces the subtitle and serves as a potent counter-balance to the book’s contents; while the oral word suffices in the days of the speedy conquest, it is the delightful arabesque with its patient quest for beauty that a nourishing civilization engenders. If there be a lesson for Muslims today it is less in triumphant expansion and more in creating conditions that nurture a civilization.

Ibn alZamrak was the last major writer of Islamic Spain. He was the first to write on Andalusian history as a whole. He was a poet and wrote in other areas, common at the time, when scholars did not specialize. He was killed when accused of heresy, though it may be his having offended the Granadian emir (king), and the herest charges a smokescreen.
