No serious study of ancient Roman topography and its monuments is undertaken without consulting the work of Rodolfo Lanciani (1845-1929), the archaeologist and scholar of ancient Rome. His Forma Urbis Romae, a large map published in sections between 1893 and 1901, captures all that was then known of the existence of the built world in the city. His multi-volumed Storia degli Scavi (1902-1913) is a formidable reference work, filled with notices of archaeological finds made in Rome from c. 1000 to 1870. Beginning in c. 1871, Lanciani provided innumerable articles and notes for two primary journals published by the Italian state and Rome' s municipal government, respectively, Notizie degli Scavi and Bulletino della Commissione archeologica comunale di Roma, on artifacts or buildings being freshly unearthed in Rome. In addition, he wrote English-language books and articles, using the recent discoveries to educate an Anglo-American audience about ancient Roman culture.

Although his life has been fully examined by Domenico Palombi in 2006, a rigorous examination of Lanciani' s formidable scholarly production has not yet been undertaken. This monograph will do this, positioning some of his fascinations, interpretations, and presentations of ancient Rome within a broad context of historical and cultural events in late 19th- / early 20th-century Rome. It scrutinizes Lanciani' s published work with the following in mind: the subtle transformations in the practice of archaeology in Italy, the extreme destruction of ancient Rome during the construction of the modern capital, the variable oversight of the bureaucratic archaeological services in Rome, and the heated political discourse over the ownership and display of cultural patrimony in the new nation. In addition, it takes into account that Lanciani's publications significantly contributed and responded to the interests of a nexus of international scholars, archaeologists, collectors, and museum professionals, including those from the United States.

The new book by Marina De Franceschini and Giuseppe Veneziano, published by Rirella Editrice, is entitled “Pantheon. Architecture & Light”. It is about their discoveries of Archaeoastronomy in the Pantheon: the Arc of Light and the Square of Light.

They are sacred illuminations that can still be seen today and had a very precise symbolic meaning. The book traces the millenary history of this extraordinary building, a masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture, which still today has the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.
It is the first of the Series "Studies of Archaeoastronomy", volumes with full color pictures, which explain the discoveries of Archaeoastronomy made by Marina De Franceschini and Giuseppe Veneziano in the Pantheon and in other Roman buildings, such as Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Castel Sant'Angelo and the Grotto of Tiberius in Sperlonga.

Bithynia was an ancient region in northwestern part of Anatolia, adjoining the Sea of the Marmara, the Bosporus and the Black Sea. It was bordered Mysia, Paphlagonia and Phrygia. From the fourth century B.C. it was an independent kingdom and its capital Nicomedia (today İzmit in Kocaeli) was rebuilt on the site of ancient Astacus in 264 B.C. Bithynia was bequeathed to the Roman Republic in 74 B.C., and became united with the Pontus region as the province of Bithynia et Pontus. During the Late Antiquity the region of Nicomedia and Nicaea witnessed several events related to early Christianity and early Christian ecclestiastical history. In the seventh century it was incorporated into the Byzantine Opsikion theme. Bithynia was eventually conquered by the Ottoman Turks between A.D. 1325 and 1333.
In this e-symposium our aim was to compile all recent evidence on the archaeology, history, epigraphy, numismatics, historical geography etc. on Bithynia and its cities, such as Nicomedia and Nicaea during the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, i.e. between the sixth century B.C. and 14th century A.D.

This volume presents fourteen papers by Roman archaeologists and historians discussing approaches to the economic history of Pompeii, and the role of the Pompeian evidence in debates about the Roman economy.  Four themes are discussed. The first of these is the position of Pompeii and its agricultural environment, discussing the productivity and specialization of agriculture in the Vesuvian region, and the degree to which we can explain Pompeii’s size and wealth on the basis of the city’s economic hinterland. A second issue discussed is what Pompeians got out of their economy: how well-off were people in Pompeii?  This involves discussing the consumption of everyday consumer goods, analyzing archaeobotanical remains to highlight the quality of Pompeian diets, and discussing what bone remains reveal about the health of the inhabitants of Pompeii. A third theme is economic life in the city: how are we to understand the evidence for crafts and manufacturing? How are we to assess Pompeii’s commercial topography? Who were the people who actually invested in constructing shops and workshops? In which economic contexts were Pompeian paintings produced? Finally, the volume discusses money and business: how integrated was Pompeii into the wider world of commerce and exchange, and what can the many coins found at Pompeii tell us about this? What do the wax tablets found near Pompeii tell us about trade in the Bay of Naples in the first century AD? Together, the chapters of this volume highlight how Pompeii became a very rich community, and how it profited from its position in the centre of the Roman world.

Temples served as treasuries and banks, and priesthoods came with political power. The expansion of Roman religion transformed economies throughout the Empire, affecting established institutions and creating new centres of sacred consumption and production. Roman religion mobilised vast quantities of wealth and resources, but tensions between traditional piety and financial expenditure remained. This dynamic interplay between religion and the economy created a complex system that has hitherto received little attention. This conference brings together an international body of scholars to discuss the economic role of religion in the Roman world. A variety of historical and archaeological approaches will explore the subject throughout the Republican and Imperial periods. Through examination of the economic function of religious institutions, the role of priests and patrons, and the provincial impact of Roman religion, this meeting aims to understand better the nature and extent of religion's influence on the wider economy and how it changed with the growth of the Empire.
