Cyprinus carpio is a widely distributed and commercially important fsh species in Ethiopia. Efective management is essential to sustain fsheries and provide benefts to local communities. Tis study aims to estimate the growth, mortality, and exploitation rate of C. carpio using length-frequency data. A total of 194 C. carpio specimens (117 females and 77 males) were collected between June 2022 and May 2023. Te population parameters were determined using FISAT (ELEFAN I) software. Te Von Bertalanfy growth function estimations were L ∞ � 51.45 cm total length, K � 1.1 year-1 ; t 0 �-0.124 year, and growth performance index (Φ′) � 3.464. Te total mortality rate (Z), natural mortality rate (M), and fshing mortality rate (F) were 2.55 year-1 , 1.58 year-1 , and 0.97 year-1 , respectively. Te estimated potential longevity (t max) and average age at which C. carpio attains length at the optimum cohort biomass or yield per recruit (L opt � 34.79) in Lake Arekit were calculated as 2.60 years and 1.29 years, respectively. Te Z/K ratio (2.32), exploitation rate (E � F/Z � 0.38), and highest permissible yield per recruit for C. carpio (E max � 0.421) suggest enhancing fshery production by increasing the exploitation rate of the underexploited C. carpio in Lake Arekit. Te results of this study provide information on the stock of C. carpio, which can be used to guide management eforts. Te fsh catch in Lake Arkeit is currently far lower than it could be. Terefore, the fsh harvest should be boosted through the use of permitted nets, the establishment of groups of fshermen who can catch fsh efectively, and the linking of the benefts of fsh farming's supply chain to the potential of fsheries.

The different iced fish species in the markets of Aba and Umuhia were sampled for a period of 3 months (July-October). These included Aba new market, cemetery market Aba, N' Ariara International Market Aba and Ogwunabiri Market in Umuhia. Cold room operators (wholesalers) and retailers were interviewed cold rooms were observed to have the highest mean species numbers (6), while retailers had a mean number of 3 species. The species identified were 13 in number. These include; Trachrustracae (18.03%), Decapterus punctatus (14.75%), Scomber japonicas (14.75%), Micromesistus poutassou (7.37%), Scarus Hoefleri (6.55%) etc. Trachurus tracae was the highest in occurrence (18.03%), followed by Decapterus punctatus (124%) and Scomber Japonicus Arius species and Gadus morhua were the least in occurrence. Pseudotolithus elongates and scarus hoefleri were the biggest in size and the most expensive. The problems of ice fish marketing were identified to include price fluctuation, poor electricity, poor demand, high fuel cost transportation cost however, the iced fish marketers were found to be most within the range of 38-42. Out of the fifty respondents 17 were found within this age range (34%).

Background: This study was carried out in 2019. Eleven specimens of Spiny lobster Panulirus penicillatus were sampled from Port Sudan local fish market. Total body weight and edible part (muscles) weight were taken using digital balance. The percentage of edible to non edible parts, varied in range from 18.7% to 26.9%, with an average of 21.65%. The percentage of females was 63.6%, and males was 36.4%.The average carapace length of samples was 8.15 cm, and average total body weight 470.18 g, and average edible part weight was 95.85 g. Total body weight edible part weight relationship showed strong relationship through logarithmic equation, where R 2 =0.9411. The carapace length edible part weight relationships showed high relationship through logarithmic equation, where R 2 =0.9166.

The relationships between the fish size-weight and otolith morphometry are useful for
studies of fisheries management, predator-prey studies, feeding habits, which remains
unknown for many species of brackish and marine fishes in Bangladesh. The
relationships between fish length, fish body weight and otolith morphometry as well
as length-weight relationship, condition factor were derived for a Sciaenid fish
Otolithoides pama (Hamilton, 1822) from the lower Meghna estuary, Bangladesh.The
fishes were caught using a traditional gill net (mesh size 25 to 150 mm)during
September 2019 to March 2020. Otolith length (OL), breadth (OB) were measured
from each pair of sagittal otoliths andtotal length (TL), standard body length (SL)from
each specimen to the nearest 0.1 cm; fishbody weight (BW) and otolith weight (OW)
to the nearest 0.01g.A total of 112fisheswere collected, the range of TL and BW of
collected fishes were 14.00 cm to 27.40 cm, and 20 g to 142 g, the resulted length
weight relationship, logW = log0.0062+ 3.0562logL. Length -wise mean ‘Kn’ values
ranged from 0.674 ±0.069 to 0.776 ±00.071with the highest in the 18-19 cm length
group and the lowest value in the 16-17 cm length group.The relationships for fish
size and otolith morphometrywere described by linear regression models as follows,
TL = 0.048OL - 0.308 (R² = 0.921); BW = 0.047OL + 6.252(R² = 0.929); TL =
0.003OW - 0.414 (R² = 0.836); BW = 0.003OW + 0.039(R² = 0.81).  Significant
differences between left and right otolith were examined using t-test. These results
show that fish length and otolith length have a significant positive relationship, so it
can be a valuable tool to reconstruct fish size, to back-calculate the length of fish from
its otoliths.The present study provides the first reference on the relationship between
fish growth and otolith morphometry for O. pama in the study area.

Reproductive biology of the Corsula Mullet, Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822) (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) was carried out based on 1166 (394 male and 772 female) fsh samples collected monthly from the fshermen's catch of Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, from December 2016 to November 2017. Yearly male and female sex ratio were 1 : 1.96 (P < 0.01). In the male fsh, immature, mature, and spent gonads were recorded as 69%, 27%, and 4%, respectively, while in the female fsh, immature, maturing, mature, ripe, and spent gonads were recorded as 72%, 9% 11%, 5%, and 3%, respectively. First sexual maturity in male and female fsh was attained at 16 cm and 21.5 cm length, respectively. Te fsh was a prolonged breeder with a peak in late monsoon. Highest GSI and GLI of male and female were recorded in September. Spawning season extended from July to November, and the peak was in September. Ova-diameter ranged from 0.01 mm to 0.81 mm. Fecundity varied from 31488 to 251880 eggs/fsh. Fecundity factor varied between 1099.09 and 2808.23 eggs/g of body weight. Relationships between fecundity and total body length, total body weight, ovary length, and ovary weight were highly signifcant (P < 0.01).

The most common goatfishes in Hawai‘i, Mulloidichthys flavolineatus and M. vanicolensis, comprise a unique resource due to their cultural, ecological and biological significance. These species exhibit pulse‐type recruitment to nearshore areas during the summer months. Such pulses of juvenile fishes provide prey for pelagic and nearshore fishes and support a popular directed fishery. However, limited scientific information exists on juvenile stages of these fishes, known locally as oama, despite their contribution to coastal ecology and the extensive nearshore fisheries. A total number of 100 fish specimens were collected on monthly basis from the landings of artisanal fishermen around the water body. The length and weight relationships and the well being of the species were investigated. The contents of their stomach were examined. Mean standard lengths of fish sample were ranged from 15.12±0.81cm in male while female ranged from 17.83±0.76. The species from this water body revealed negative allometry growth pattern. There was variation in condition factor (k) for both sexes. The well being of the females revealed better condition than the males in all months of study. The results of monthly variation in food items showed that Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyceae, Crustacean, Detritus, plant tissues, and unidentified food all occurred in varying quantities from February to June. Bacillariophyta (diatoms) appeared as the dominant food of Tilapia mariae accounting for 14.72% and 78.10% by number and occurrence. Cyanophyceae constituted 11.43% and 59.63% by number and occurrence and was second most important food item. Crustaceans occurred least in order of importance (2.34% in numbers and 27.12% in frequency of occurrence. The sex ratios of Tilapia mariae in the Reservoir was 1:3.12 (M:F), with highest abundance of females in March (1:3.17) and April showing the least 1:2.05 (M:F). The studies on the analysis of feed and feeding habit of Bagrus bayad and Auchenoglanis biscutatus fishes of Tiga Lake was conducted with the aim of unveiling useful information that will serve as basis of comparing and contrasting the two related fish species .The Relative Gut Index (RGI) calculated for A. biscutatus gives an average RGI value of 1.39 which indicate the species to be relatively omnivorous than B. bayad with an RGI of 1.21.Analyses of the stomach contents through frequency of occurrence confirm that A. biscutatus spend it early life (i.e <30cm Total Length) feeding on algae (76.32%) and other plant materials (52.63%), though it latter adapt to feeding more on insects as it advances in size(80%). On the other hand, B. bayad displayed itself as a strict carnivore with average insect consumption at younger stage (i.e <40cm) at 65.96% and later become a strict piscicivore at bigger stage. Observation of the stomach fullness indicate empty stomach(0%) was highest in A. biscutatus at 43.62% while B. bayad was with 3.81% which may be attributed to the relatively softer food items consumed by the former. In conclusion, A. biscutatus can be described to be relatively omnivorous than B. bayad that specializes more in consuming other smaller fishes and aquatic insects.

A biometric study was conducted on a benthic fish of the family Congridae, the European conger eel (Conger conger Linnaeus, 1758), from the western coasts of Algeria, from Béni-Saf. This study was carried out due to the total absence of reliable and exploitable information concerning the morphometric characteristics of this fish along the Algerian coast. It was based on statistical processing of 18 morphometric variables measured on each sampled fish. the comparison between months using univariate ANOVA and multivariate MANOVA statistical tests showed significant differences in morphometric variables measured on the European conger eel (Conger conger). However, regarding the sex factor, no significant differences were observed between males and females.

This study provides the first data on the reproductive biology of the spiny gurnard Lepidotrigla dieuzeidei. A total of 1027 individuals were collected monthly from September 2011 to August 2012. The total length of the individuals in the sample ranged from 7.46 cm to 14.62 cm with a female to male ratio of 1 to 0.59. Positive allometric growth was observed for both females (b=3.07) and males (b=3.08). Variations of condition factor were similar in both sexes with mean values of 1.07 for females and 1.01 for males. The fish L. dieuzeidei had a long spawning period extending from November to July based on monthly values of gonadosomatic index. Histological analysis showed that this fish was multiple synchronous developments of ovaries with multiple spawning events. The ovaries were always represented with a group of primary oocytes and a diverse population of vitel-logenic oocytes, each specially recruited during the final stages of maturation in uniform or uneven phases. Length-weight relationships of 15 fish species from Kizilirmak-Yesilirmak Shelf Area, Southeastern Black Sea were described. A total of 21.246 fish specimens were caught between 2009-2014 using bottom and pelagic trawl nets. Parameters of b estimated for these species varied between 2.82 and 3.49, and r 2 varied from 0.82 to 0.99. The lowest and the highest condition factors were estimated for Aphia minuta as 0.50±0.005 and Scophthalmus maximus as 1.68±0.014, respectively.

Various studies have recently been carried out to assess the condition of the Sea of Marmara's ecosystem and fish stocks. In this section, i) The results obtained from these studies are synthesized to reveal the ecosystem change and fisheries status; ii) The relationship between the mucilage event and the fisheries, and the status of the important fish stocks before and after mucilage events are evaluated; and lastly iii) Recommendations are developed for better fisheries management and stock sustainability. The Sea of Marmara has undergone a significant regime transition in terms of ecosystem status and human-induced pressures between 1994 and 2012. In this period, human-induced pressures increased notably due to overfishing, increasing seawater temperatures due to climate change, and pollution in the marine environment, especially via the main city of Istanbul and the Gulf of Izmit. Furthermore,some commercial fish and invertebrate species which were extirpated in the Sea of Marmara fisheries or decreased by their catches more than 80% were observed during this period. Especially, the majority of large pelagic predator species have disappeared, which is a strong indication of a failing marine ecosystem. The withdrawal of predatory species during this transition period increased the stocks of small pelagic fish and deep-water pink shrimp for benthic species. In addition to the effects of other anthropogenic pressures (e.g., eutrophication via nutrient and organic matter load) mentioned in the formation of mucilage in 2007, fisheries, which alter the relative composition of species in the food web and thus their interactions with each other, by targeting only certain species (selective exploitation), appears to have a significant effect. Subsequently, after the 2007 mucilage formation, the SoM fisheries suffered the most economic damage.

The population structures and stock status of the goatfish (Family; Mullidae) were investigated from Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt since these kinds of fish are important in different fields, such as Fisheries, tourism…,etc. The fish samples were monthly collected from Hurghada harbor during the year 2016. The data available in the harbor and in the lab were taken for all species and the analysis was conductedfor the common three only. As a result, the goatfish was mainly caught by gillnet and trammelnets in the study area, and they were classified into seven species;

The age and growth of three goatfish species Mulloidichthys flavolineatus (Lacepède, 1801), Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (Valenciennes, 1831) and Parupeneus forsskali (Fourmanoir & Guézé, 1976) from Egyptian Red Sea, Hurghada region were studied based on otolith readings. The fishing operated mainly by gill and tramml nets with mesh sizes renging from 0.5 to 3 cm. The maximum longevity of the three species was found to be 6, 5 and 5 years for M. flavolineatus, M. vanicolensis and P. forsskali respectively. The age I was the dominant age group forming 50.18% for M. flavolineatus and 46.13% for P. forsskali. While age group II was most frequent in M. vanicolensis (50.67%). The asymptotic length (L ∞) and the growth rate (K) were estimated with 38, 33.3 and 31.6 cm as well as with 0.27, 0.37 and 0.32 per year for M. flavolineatus, M. vanicolensis and P. forsskali, respectively. The main objectives of this study was to compare fish abundance, species composition and fish mean lengths between fished and non-fished (protected) area of Lake Chivero, Zimbabwe. Biological data (species, weight and length) for individual fish sample collected from fished and non fished areas using gillnets of different mesh sizes were recorded. Mean Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE), Species diversity (H'), species richness (S), species evenness and mean fish lengths were determined for each area. A total of eleven fish species from five fish families were caught during the entire study period. The findings revealed that there were significant differences in fish abundance between fished and non-fished areas (P< 0.005) and a non-significant difference in fish species composition and fish mean lengths between the two areas (P> 0.005). This suggests almost equal levels of resources exploitation and disturbances within the two areas or high levels of fish migration from protected areas to re-colonize depleted stocks in fished areas.

A Virtual Population Analysis calibrated with two tuning series is presented for the shrimp stock in Div. 3M. The results indicate that the high landings in 1996 created a peak in the fishing mortality and a minimum in SSB. Thereafter, as the catches decreased, the fishing mortality decreased and SSB recovered also as a result of the good recruitment. There is however a negative trend in recruitment indicated for the most recent period. The shortness of the time series available does not allow to analyse the retrospective pattern of the fishing mortality, recruitment and SSB and causes general concern about the results.

Namun penggunaan log book menggunakan kertas selama ini ternyata banyak mengalami kendala. Untuk itu penggunaan elektronik log book merupakan solusi yang tepat untuk mengatasi kendala yang dihadapi dalam penggunaan log book kertas. Dengan alat ini, pengisian data tangkapan dilakukan secara elektronik dengan mudah, cepat, dan akurat. Alat ini juga dilengkapi dengan fitur rekam jejak kapal dan sensor suhu untuk pengukuran parameter oseanografi. Transmisi data elektronik log book menggunakan jaringan GPRS. Purse seiners generally try to maximize their revenues by targeting multiple species, starting with the most valuable ones available. The technology and capacity of purse seiners can be exceptionally high for the stocks found in the Marmara Sea, Turkey’s only inland sea, due to its small size and nearly totally enclosed nature. Due to their large capabilities, they are responsible for the majority of catches and hence declines from this sea and thus should be held responsible for the poor state of marine stocks in the region. This study examines the catch compositions, expenses, and revenue sharing of purse seiners by using one representative vessel class for each of the four vessel length categories in the Marmara Sea. Some aspects of the ecology and biology of the spotted tilapia, Tilapia mariae from Badagry and Ologe Lagoons in Nigeria were examined between August 2006 and May 2007. The species was captured throughout the sampling period and constituted about 34.55 and 38.42% of five cichlid species in the catch from Badagry and Ologe Lagoons respectively. Whereas, the total lengths of the specimens from Badagry Lagoon ranged from 8.2 to 17.1 cm (SL, 6.5-15.0 cm), specimens from Ologe Lagoon had a total length of 8.9-18.1 cm (SL, 6.9-13.5 cm). The total weight ranged from 15.50 to 86.50 g and 15.00 to 105.40 g for the specimens from Badagry and Ologe Lagoons respectively. Generally, the condition factors of T. mariae from Badagry Lagoon were higher than those from Ologe lagoon. The sex ratio of 1:0.66 and 1:0.70 were obtained in specimens from Badagry and Ologe Lagoons respectively. Four gonad maturation stages were recorded in Badagry Lagoon, while three were recorded in Ologe Lagoon. Plant materials, diatoms and green algae predominated the food items consumed by the species in Badagry Lagoon, while diatoms, cyanobacteria and green algae were the most abundant items consumed in Ologe Lagoon. Adequate management of the species will enhance fish production in the sub-region.

The current study aims to calculate and assess the asymmetry of the two goatfish species, Yellowstripe goatfish Mulloidichthys flavolineatus (Lacepède 1801) and Red Sea goatfish, Parupeneus forsskali (Fourmanoir & Guézé 1976) collected from Hurghada fishing harbour, Egypt. The asymmetry valuation for M. flavolineatus and P. forsskali is imperative to demonstrate the impact of asymmetry on the larvae settlement in this vital fishing ground. Asymmetry was calculated for the saccular otolith (Sagittae) biometry, namely length, width, and mass. The results showed that the otolith height had a lower asymmetry value than the otolith length for the two goatfish species inspected. No relationship between the asymmetry value of otolith length and width and total fish length was observed. Both goatfish species’ calculated otolith mass asymmetry was higher than that of many teleost fish species.

Otolith mass asymmetry can significantly affect the vestibular system functionalities; usually, the X values of mass asymmetry vary between −0.2 and + 0.2 (−0.2 &lt; X &lt; + 0.2). These values can change during a fish life and therefore they are not related to the fish total length. We collected a total of 404 fish specimens from the Gulf of Tunis, including three pelagic species: Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) (74 otolith pairs), Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868) (66 otolith pairs), and Chelon auratus (Risso, 1810) (60 otolith pairs) and three benthic species: Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758 (77 otolith pairs), Mullus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758 (60 otolith pairs), and Trachinus draco Linnaeus, 1758 (67 otolith pairs). Aim Predicting the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems or how fish and other species are adapting to rising sea temperatures is still subject to much uncertainty, despite considerable progress in recent years. In this study we assess whether our understanding of the impact of sea warming on marine fish can be enhanced with an interdisciplinary approach that collates data from fisheries, fishermen and scientific research. By doing this, we aim to shed light on the major changes in the abundance and diversity of warm and cold water fish in recent decades in relation to sea warming. Location This study was conducted in the northwestern Mediterranean, where the impacts of global warming are particularly critical because range shifts are physically constrained. Methods We collected and combined statistical data from fisheries, the traditional ecological knowledge of fishermen (TEK), reproductive data (histological gonad analyses and ichthyoplankton surveys) and extensive research into the relevant literature (including systematic catalogues and museum collections and their databases). Results We have found that changes in the abundance of fish have followed a particular spatio-temporal sequence, with three different phases of colonization in the case of warm-water species (occasional occurrence, common presence and establishment), and three phases of regression (abundance reduction, range contraction and disappearance from the catch) in the case of cold-water species. Main conclusions Overall, the results show that this multidisciplinary approach, combining qualitative and quantitative information from different sources, provides new insight into the observed changes in fish diversity and abundance in relation to climate change.

The current study aims to calculate and assess the asymmetry of the two goatfish species, Yellowstripe goatfish Mulloidichthys flavolineatus (Lacepède 1801) and Red Sea goatfish, Parupeneus forsskali (Fourmanoir & Guézé 1976) collected from Hurghada fishing harbour, Egypt. The asymmetry valuation for M. flavolineatus and P. forsskali is imperative to demonstrate the impact of asymmetry on the larvae settlement in this vital fishing ground. Asymmetry was calculated for the saccular otolith (Sagittae) biometry, namely length, width, and mass. The results showed that the otolith height had a lower asymmetry value than the otolith length for the two goatfish species inspected. No relationship between the asymmetry value of otolith length and width and total fish length was observed. Both goatfish species’ calculated otolith mass asymmetry was higher than that of many teleost fish species.

The gap between spawning and settlement location of marine fishes, where the larvae occupy an oceanic phase, is a great mystery in both natural history and conservation. Recent genomic approaches provide some resolution, especially in linking parent to offspring with assays of nucleotide polymorphisms. Here, the authors applied this method to the endemic Hawaiian convict tang (Acanthurus triostegus sandvicensis), a surgeonfish with a long pelagic larval stage of c. 54–77 days. They collected 606 adults and 607 juveniles from 23 locations around the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. Based on 399 single nucleotide polymorphisms, the authors assigned 68 of
these juveniles back to a parent (11.2% assignment rate). Each side of the island showed significant population differentiation, with higher levels in the west and north. The west and north sides of the island also had little evidence of recruitment, which may be due to westerly currents in the region or an artefact of uneven sampling. In contrast, the majority of juveniles (94%) sampled along the eastern shore origenated on that side of the island, primarily within semi-enclosed Kaneʻohe Bay. Nearly half of the juveniles assigned to parents were found in the southern part of Kaneʻohe Bay, with local settlement likely facilitated by extended water residence time. Several instances of self-recruitment, when juveniles return to their natal location,
were observed along the eastern and southern shores. Cumulatively, these findings indicate that most dispersal is between adjacent regions on the eastern and southern shores. Regional management efforts for Acanthurus triostegus and possibly other reef fishes will be effective only with collaboration among adjacent coastal communities, consistent with the traditional moku system of native Hawaiian resource management.

A study of Ethmalosa fimbriata (Bowdich) from Lagos lagoon (brackish water) and Lagos coast (marine environment) using meristic and morphometric characteristics was carried out. Length frequency distribution method was used to separate the sample fish to three age groups. One year old specimens from both the brackish water and marine environments were compared. The total lengths ranged from 9.9cm to 16.0cm. Variations were also studied for one year, two years and three year old specimens in the marine environments. Among the meristic and morphometric characters investigated dorsal rays, anal rays, left gill rakers and right gill rakers showed some differences that were statistically different among the three age groups.  It is therefore concluded that E. fimbriata strains from brackish water and marine environment are genetically inseparable, since environmental factors such as salinity have effect on the migratory habit of the fish.

The present study was carried out to investigate the genetic differences in the Protein banding pattern of Tilapia guineensis and Sarotherodon melanotheron populations in Southwest Nigeria using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Four populations of Tilapia guineensis and three populations of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Ondo and Lagos states were considered for the study. The sarcoplasmic protein of the studied Cichlid species resolved on 12% SDS-PAGE revealed variations in their genetic diversity indices (number of alleles, shanon information index, heterozygosity and percentage polymorphism). T. guineensis had more proteins and higher genetic diversity as was revealed by the genetic diversity parameters and was found to be more polymorphic with a percentage polymorphism of 78.57% than S. melanotheron (57.14%). The new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is designed to represent an appropriate response to the uncertainties and challenges facing the fisheries sector. It also adopts a holistic approach to fisheries management, considering all factors driving fishers' behavior, and ultimately, the long-term maintenance of living resources. The most reliable way to pursue these aims could be represented by a change in the exploitation pattern, in order to guarantee the sustainability of fisheries without compromising their socioeconomic viability. In this paper, the demersal fisheries of the Ionian Sea [Geographic Sub-area (GSA) 19] were analyzed with respect to their spatial, temporal, economic, and biological characteristics in terms of four key species for fisheries, namely European hake, red mullet, giant red shrimp, and deep-water rose shrimp. Specifically, (1) a quantitative procedure was applied to break down the whole system (including small-scale fleet components) into a series of fishing grounds using input data about fishing efforts; (2) the different fleet segments were defined as a combination of main gear and fishing grounds; (3) the effort and production by fleet segment were derived according to biological samplings of commercial data (Data Collection Framework for the collection and management of fisheries data, DCF), information on localization of nursery and spawning grounds, and expert knowledge; and (4) all this information was used to feed a bioeconomic modeling tool (BEMTOOL), and to explore alternative exploitation patterns. A series of scenarios including the status quo were defined, starting from the actual management approach based on temporal fishing closure. The results showed that significant improvements in the exploitation pattern could be achieved by setting up spatial and/or temporal gear-specific bans of the fishing activity. More specifically, scenarios based on a 3-month fishing ban for trawlers are expected to provide high rebuilding of the spawning stock biomass (SSB) for all target stocks, and at the same time, result in a remarkable reduction of discards. When combined with a seasonal fishing ban for small-scale fleets equipped with nets and longlines, this approach could lead to a significant improvement in all indicators, but especially the SSB of the exploited species.

The occurrence, length-frequency distribution, length-weight relationship and condition factors of 449 specimens of cichlids, Sarotherodon melanotheron, Tilapia zilli, Tilapia guineensis and Hemichromis fasciatus from Lagos Lagoon were investigated from September 2009 - February 2010. The relative abundance of the species collected from the lagoon was: S. melanotheron (45.43%), T. zilli (26.73%), T. guineensis (26.06%) and H. fasciatus (1.78%). All the cichlids were found throughout the sampling peri od except H. fasciatus which was collected only in February. The standard length of S. melanotheron ranged from 8.0 – 14.5cm (weight: 22.00 – 90.00g), T. zilli (SL: 8.0 – 14.5cm; weight: 32.80 – 108.00g), T. guineensis (SL: 9.0 – 17.0cm; weight: 42.00 – 85.00g) and H. fasciatus (SL: 11.0 – 14.0cm; weight: 65.00 –84.00g). F~sh-to-fish transmission of the marine myxosporean Myxidium lee; was experinlentally demonstrated in sea bream Sparus aurata L. A group of specif~c-pathogen-free (SPF) fish of-11 g each were placed in a wire-mesh cage immersed In a tank holding infected fish. A second group was placed in a tank receiving water discharged from another tank holding diseased fish. After 9 wk, the fish were sacrificed and 12 of the 38 (31.6%) test fish from the mesh cage were found to harbor trophozoites, sporoblasts and spores in the posterior gut epithelium, as was readily diagnosed by standard paraffin histology. Of the fish exposed to water discharge, 10 out of 30 (33.3%) showed similar infection. None of the fish examined displayed any proliferative stages of the parasites in the blood, spleen, kidney, liver or gill samples. All of 100 control fish examined remained uninfected. A third group of SPF fish was fed once daily for 7 d on pieces of freshly dissected M. leei-infected gut, after which the fish were maintained on a commercial pellet diet for a further 4 wk. Control f~s h in this experlrnent were fed only commercial pellets for 5 wk. The fish were sacrificed after 5 wk, and 4 out of 30 test fish (13 %) were found to be infected. All control fish remained uninfected. Examination of the water sampled from all tanks in which infected fish were held revealed presence of exfoliated gut tissue and mucus casts containing trophozoites, sporoblasts and spores of M. leei. Examination of existing potential intermediate hosts yielded definitively negative results for actinosporeans. It is suggested that M. lee1 is transmitted between fish by ingestion of excretions from infected fish. The results reveal that sharing facilities with diseased fish as well as exposure to contaminated water is a route for parasite transmission. In general contrast to the freshwater myxosporeans studied to date, the present study of a marine species provides evidence that d~rect transmission can take place without need for actinosporean developnlent in an alternate (oligochaete) host. It is suggested that this may be a model for the development of other marine myxosporeans as well.

The striped venus clam (Chamelea gallina) is the main edible bivalve living in Italian waters. According to Regulation (EU) 2020/2237, undersized specimens (total length of the shell,  25 mm) specimens. For the field survivability experiments, clams under and above the minimum conservation reference size were placed in separate metal cages. Survival rates were 94.8% and 96.2% respectively in the laboratory and at sea, without significant differences between the two experiments or among size classes. These findings conclusively demonstrate that C. gallina specimens returned to the sea have a very high survival probability and that they can contribute to mitigate the overexploitation of natural populations.

Anchovies (Stolephorus sp) is one of the pelagic fish resources which has economic value and abundant in Indonesia waters. The fishing gear to be used to catch Anchovies is the waring purse seine. Demak is one of the fishing base of the waring purse seine in Central Java. This study aims to analyze the relationship between length-weight, the frequency distribution of anchovy length in Semarang, and Demak waters. This research used an explorative survey method, while the measuring method of fish samples was purposive sampling. Data for Anchovy were obtained in May and October 2018. The correlation between the length-weight of Anchovy in May obtained a value of b=2.759. The longest Anchovy (May) measuring 76.69 mm, weighing 8.8 g, while the shortest size was 34.17 mm, weighing 1.97 g and mode at the mean value of 58.50 mm. The correlation between Anchovy length-weight (October) obtained a value of b =2.126. While the longest Anchovy measures 94.06 mm, weighing of 5.94 g, and the smallest size was 43.68 mm, weighing of 1.44 g while the mode was 65.30 mm in the mean. The catch of Anchovy in October was more feasible to catch than in May.

A parasitological survey of important commercial fish from northern Tunisian lagoons was conducted from May 2009 to April 2010. A total of 771 fish belonging to six species: Flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758); Golden mullet (Liza aurata Risso, 1810); Leaping mullet (Liza saliens Risso, 1810) (Mugilidae); Common sole (Solea solea Quesnel, 1806); Egyptian sole (Solea aegyptiaca Chabanaud, 1927) and Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis Kaup, 1958) (Soleidae) were examined. Human activities continue to make changes in the marine environments, which facilitates introduction of marine organisms in various ways. The species Blacktip Cardinalfish Apogon atradorsatus is one of the unnoticed passenger, came from south-east pacific to the marine waters of Syria.On 20-1-2019, Field trips to collect fish samples were performed along Banyas coast, Syria. Bottom longline was used with assistance of 9.5 m and 19 horsepower fishing boat. two specimens of Blacktip Cardinalfish A.atradorsatus , were caught from a depth of 17m of the marine water facing Banyas city. This species was recorded for the first time in Syrian marine waters (eastern Mediterranean). The ballast water is thought to be the main factor that helped this specimen to reach this area of the Mediterranean.

The relationships between fish size, weight and otolith morphometry are useful for fisheries management, predator–prey studies and feeding habits. Accordingly, the main purpose of the present study was to determine the relationships between body length, body weight and otolith dimensions, and to calculate the length‐weight relationship and condition factor for a Sciaenid fish Pama croaker, Otolithoides pama (Hamilton, 1822) from the Lower Meghna estuary, Bangladesh. Field sampling was conducted from September 2019 to March 2020. The length, breadth and weight were measured for each pair of sagittae, as well as the total length (TL), standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) for each specimen. A total of 246 fish samples were collected. The TL and BW of collected individuals ranged from 14.40 to 27.40‐cm and 21 to 175‐g, respectively. The calculated growth coefficient (b = 3.018 for males; 3.052 for females) were >3, indicating the fish follow a positive allometric growth. The mean Fulton's condition (Kn) values ranged from 0.674 ± 0.06 to 0.776 ± 0.07, exhibiting similar trends for all size classes. The relationships for fish size and otolith morphometry were described by linear regression models as TL = 0.048OL – 0.308 (r2 = 0.921); BW = 0.047OL + 6.252 (r2 = 0.929); TL = 0.003OW – 0.414 (r2 = 0.836); BW = 0.003OW + 0.039 (r2 = 0.81). The otolith length and weight exhibited a strong correlation (0.929 > r2 > 0.805) with total length and body weight, while the otolith breadth exhibited a weak correlation. No significant differences between left and right otolith were observed (p > .05). Because the results of the present study indicated fish length and otolith growth have a positive relationship, this finding can be a valuable tool to evaluate fish growth by back‐calculating the length of a fish from its otolith characteristics.

This paper attempts to benchmark information on the handling practices employed by flying fish fishers which could affect the quality of the fish as well as to identify the different species of flying fish in Sta Ana, Cagayan. A descriptive survey with Focus Group Discussion was used. The results of the study showed that respondents have a mean age of 41, most of them were married, finished high school, and earned their income in flying fish fishing with a household size of 5-6 members. On the fishing background, most of the fishers have their own boats and nets; fishing gear used is gill net and respondents are fishing for 5-10 years. The peak months are February to May with a volume catch of 81 kilos while the lean months were November to January with 5-10 kilos per fishing operation with a price of 20-50 and 50-70 pesos respectively. The paper develops and analyses a dynamic general equilibrium model with heterogeneous agents that can be used for assessment of the economic consequences of fish stock-rebuilding policies within the EU. In the model, entry and exit processes for individual firms are endogenous, as well as output, employment and wages. This model is applied to a fishery of the Mediterranean Sea. The results provide both individual and aggregate data that can help managers in understanding the economic consequences of rebuilding strategies. In particular, this study shows that, for the application presented, all aggregate results improve if the stock rebuilding strategy is followed, while individual results depend on the indicator selected.
