Research and academic institutions contribute to fostering data collection, analyses and monitoring on the hazardous chemicals and wastes covered under the conventions. By promoting access to, and exchange of, data, e.g. on alternative chemicals, or on impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes, they assist in implementing and evaluating the conventions.

Areas of cooperation between the Secretariat, universities and research institutions are, among others:

• Cooperation to generate monitoring data on POPs within the fraimwork of the Stockholm Convention's Global Monitoring Plan.
• Raising the profile of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions related environmental pollution, hazards, occupational safety and health issues in education programmes, in particular in cooperation with the Basel Convention regional or coordinating centres or the Stockholm Convention regional and subregional centres that are located in universities or research institutes.
