Non-Merit Position Application for Public Service Trainee not Engaged in Regular Employment

This is temporary, unskilled and semi-skilled labor for the City of Mobile Public Works divisions.  Requires the completion of a minimum of the 8th grade, and departments may require a valid driver's license.  Public Service Trainees perform a wide variety of tasks that require physical strength and stamina and must be able to lift items weighing over 40 pounds.

It is helpful for Public Service Trainees to have some knowledge of the proper use of hand and power tools, the ability to understand and follow instructions, the ability to perform heavy manual work under varying weather conditions, and the ability to meet attendance guidelines and work well with others.

After working 6 months, Public Service Trainees may apply for a Public Service Worker I (PSW I) position, which is a merit system job.  Training in a PSW I job may lead to advancement when learning the operation of a variety of equipment or performing more skilled work.

Some examples of work to be performed include: Patching holes in roads with asphalt; flagging automobiles around construction areas; maintaining equipment; digging ditches and cleaning culverts; cutting brush and foliage back from roadways; picking up trash on roads; assisting in hauling and laying pipe; working with shovels scattering dirt and shells; groundskeeping to include cutting lawns and shrubbery with power and hand tools; cleaning catch basins and storm drains; cleaning restrooms at parks; setting up barricades; operating equipment to include trucks, mowers, concrete mixer, small trans-movers and tractors; loading and unloading equipment and materials; performing routine maintenance work; cleaning animal shelter building and cages; planting trees and shrubs.

Mobile Police and Fire-Rescue Provisional/Direct Hire Employment Application

Police Officer

This is law enforcement work performing routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic control duties in a designated area on an assigned shift. Work may be performed in cruiser cars, patrol boats, on motorcycles, or on foot. Police officers may also be assigned to perform specialized duties in support of specific units or sections. Work may involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies.

This position requires a High School diploma or GED, preferably supplemented by college level course work in criminal justice or law enforcement, and preferably some experience dealing with the public under varying circumstances, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Candidate must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Candidate must be 19 years of age and will be required to complete the minimum standards training necessary for recognition as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Firefighter

This is public safety work engaging directly in firefighting and station and equipment maintenance activities. Firefighters are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities, often performed under conditions which require strenuous physical exertion. Considerable time is spent in the special and routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus and in the routine care of buildings and grounds. Significant work hazards related to personal injury and stress exist with this work. This position requires a High School diploma or GED. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
