DD - Overview

Overview

Disaster Dynamics: Hurricane Landfall is a four-player virtual strategy game about the interaction between natural hazards and human decisions. In particular, the game focuses on urban development and land use planning in a coastal community exposed to hurricanes and other storm hazards.

Each player takes on a role that defines what she wants to accomplish and how she can reach that goal. Play consists of proposing, negotiating, and voting on projects and policies that influence the growth of the urban landscape. Various metrics of urban development reflect how the city's state matches up with the goals of the different roles. Each turn begins in the aftermath of an extreme event, some of which may become disasters, depending on the city's response.
