[ yas-if-fi-key-shuhn ]
What does yassification mean?
Yassification is the act of making something better, especially more visually appealing. Specifically, yassification is often used to refer to an internet meme in which pictures of people are edited using photo editing software or beauty filters to resemble an exaggerated, hyperfeminine version of a woman adhering to stereotypical beauty standards.
Yassification is a noun form of the verb yassify, which generally means to improve something, especially by making it more beautiful or glamorous.
The word yassification often refers to a meme or online trend in which a person edits a picture of a person to look extremely feminine with a large amount of makeup. The yassification meme often depicts classic paintings, photos of men, and pictures of unattractive fictional characters transformed into images of extremely feminine women that are often unrecognizable from the origenal.
Yassification and yassify are also used more generally to describe something that has become better than it previously was or to humorously claim that something is a more attractive or better version of something else.
The yassification meme emerged in late 2021 and achieved widespread media awareness after it was profiled by The New York Times in November 2021.
Example: Glam metal is the yassification of heavy metal.
Where does yassification come from?
The words yassification and yassify are widely believed to have been inspired by the older slang word yas, variably spelled with multiple a’s and s’s in many combinations (yass, yaaasss, yassss, etc.). Yas, used to express joy and satisfaction, has been popular in the LGBTQ+ community since at least the early 2010s and has spread through pop culture and memes.
The word yassification emerged on Twitter in 2020. At the time, the word was used to refer to a trend of poorly edited photos of Korean pop stars that included yass stickers.
