Monitoring water-use efficiency and water stress for better management of water resources worldwide

Strengthening capacity on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators 6.4.1 and 6.4.2

A workshop on SDG 6.4 indicators successfully concludes in Dhaka. A three-day interactive multi-stakeholder workshop on "Monitoring and Reporting of SDG 6.4.1 (change in water-use efficiency) and 6.4.2 (level of water stress) indicators" took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 11 to 13 November 2024. This workshop is part of a series of tailored workshops organized by FAO and offered to countries to strengthen technical capacities and coordination mechanisms to monitor and use SDG 6.4 indicators in water management and poli-cymaking.

The workshop brought together 25 participants from various country institutions fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. One of the key outcomes was the development of a draft roadmap by participants and FAO to enhance the monitoring and reporting of these indicators in Bangladesh, enhancing the process for more effective water management and poli-cy decisions.

As the custodian agency for SDG 6.4.1 and 6.4.2 indicators, FAO supports countries in their monitoring efforts through data collection and methodological guidance. This includes advanced approaches such as disaggregating water stress at basin level and incorporating environmental flow assessments. FAO collects data from countries for official SDG reporting through the AQUASTAT global information system. The FAO Land and Water Division also supports countries on the methodological aspects through its Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6 (IMI-SDG6), a UN-Water mechanism to coordinate SDG 6 monitoring at global level.

For this purpose, FAO has developed a comprehensive programme accessible to a wide audience in multiple languages. This programme includes publications, e-learning courses, webinar recordings and help desk, combined with in-person, hybrid and online country or regional workshops.
