Paved Paradise: Highways, Wildlife Crossings and the Future of our Roaded Planet
Thursday, January 30, 2025 | 7-8 p.m.
Zoom
Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. They’re practically invisible to us, but wild animals experience them as migration and mating disruptors and deadly habitat dividers. Today road ecologists are seeking innovative solutions to combat the destruction our human infrastructure causes. Ben Goldfarb, author of the award-winning book Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, will discuss the ecological harms wrought by transportation and the movement to redress them — and how we can create a better, safer world for all living beings.
48 by 4: Hiking New Hampshire’s Highest Peaks with a Toddler
Thursday, February 13, 2025 | 6:30-8 p.m.
Green Mountain Club Meeting Hall, Waterbury Center
Four-year-old Lydia Pearson has been hiking since before she could walk, riding along in a carrier with ultrarunner mom Whitney. As soon as she could walk on her own two feet, she started summiting some of New Hampshire’s highest peaks. In June 2024, she became the youngest known hiker to complete the NH48, 48 peaks above 4,000 feet. Lydia completed all the summits over 35 hikes in less than a year, with mom carrying her little sister at her side. Lydia’s mom Whitney will share stories from their hikes together, how she got her kids to enjoy hiking, and what’s next for her trekking family.

In this presentation, Field Coordinator Nigel Bates will discuss the past, present, and future of waste management on the Long Trail.
