December 20, 2024
Initial attack activity was light this week. Two new large fires were reported in Arizona, and wildland firefighters were able to contain both of them.
Since January 1, 56,050 wildfires have burned 8,603,347 acres. This is below the 10-year average for number of wildfires, and above the average number of acres burned by nearly 2 million.
The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook is available for the period of December 2024 through March 2025.
Wildland firefighters suppress wildfires when they burn destructively and threaten homes and communities. However, some wildland fires, including many on public lands, serve an important natural function: reducing fuel loads, stimulating new plant growth, and creating healthy habitats for wildlife. Wildfire is a powerful force, but some fire is an essential component of ecosystems, and requires respect, understanding, and attention. What is the natural fire cycle in your local area?
A fast-moving storm will move off the Mid-Atlantic coast today, bringing snow to the Great Lakes and Northeast, with mixed precipitation in the Mid-Atlantic. The associated cold front will be mainly dry as it moves through the Southeast, with breezy and dry northwesterly winds behind the front this weekend. Drier than normal conditions are likely across much of the eastern US from the Plains to the East Coast next week, except from East Texas into the Mid-Mississippi and Lower Ohio Valleys where light to moderate rain is expected mid-next week. Several storms are expected to affect the northern two-thirds of the West this weekend and next week, with valley rain, mountain snow, and areas of gusty winds. However, little to no precipitation is forecast for southern California, the Southwest, and central Rockies, with southwesterly winds likely to increase mid to late next week across the Southwest, Greater Four Corners, and southern and central Plains. Temperatures will warm to a few degrees above normal across Alaska this weekend and continue into next week, with precipitation confined to the south and west coasts. Dry conditions are expected across Hawai’i into mid-next week, with land and sea breezes this weekend transitioning to a more typical trade wind pattern next week.
