February marks Black Histories & Futures Month (BHFM) at Queen’s, offering a time to reflect and celebrate the contributions of the Black community, and to promote a more equitable future. The observance builds on Black History Month, which began as a single week in 1926 before expanding across North America.
“As we celebrate Black Histories and Futures Month, we remember that the Black experience is deeply woven into the fabric of Canada and Queen’s University,” says Stephanie Simpson, Vice-Principal (Culture, Equity, and Inclusion). “In acknowledging this history, we invite everyone to reflect on the diverse contributions made to Queen’s and society, and we signal to Black communities that they are seen, valued, and welcome.”
Queen’s and surrounding communities can join BHFM events throughout February, hosted by Queen’s and local organizations on and off campus.
Kickoff event: Threads celebrates Black joy
Queen’s BHFM celebrations begin on February 3 from 12–2 p.m. at the Rose Events Commons with Threads: Weaving Black Joy & Experiences at Queen’s. Hosted by the Black Student Clubs Caucus, in collaboration with the Human Rights & Equity Office, the event will include:
- A panel discussion with students, staff, and faculty, called “The Method to the Magic” of Black Joy at Queen’s
- A live performance from the African & Caribbean Students' Association (ACSA) dance team
- Networking opportunities and refreshments
- A look at this year’s BHFM Global Event Calendar
Due to limited space, attendees should register in advance.
“This year’s theme highlights the essence of acknowledging Black experiences as part of the Queen’s tapestry; our experiences are threads weaving through Queen’s and its history and, subsequently, its future,” says Jermaine Marshall, Inclusion and Anti-Racism Advisor with the Human Rights and Equity Office. “By supporting layered collaboration and interconnectedness, we can all foster sustained Black joy within our community."

Beyond Black History Month
At Queen’s, the designation Black Histories and Futures Month reflects a forward-looking approach to Black History Month. Introduced by Movement 4 Black Lives in 2015, this vision encourages intentional reflection on the past — acknowledging the struggles and achievements of Black communities — while fostering an equitable future, celebrating ongoing accomplishments, and committing to ongoing education.
