Wells and springs presently used as groundwater monitoring sites are indicated on this interactive map. Detailed site information and available groundwater data can be accessed by clicking on each site symbol. Sites are sub-classified into three networks according to the principal agency responsible for site selection, maintenance, and data collection: (1) the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), (2) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and (3) Kentucky Division of Water-Interagency Technical Advisory Committee on Groundwater (KDOW-ITAC).
KGS Kentucky Groundwater Observation Network (KGON) sites include observation wells used to collect long-term continuous or periodic water-level measurements, and springs used to collect stage-discharge data. KGON sites track short-term and longer-term variations in groundwater levels and spring discharges in major aquifers where groundwater withdrawals for public, irrigation, and industrial water supplies are relatively large and expected to increase.
USGS observation well sites in Kentucky are part of a national, federally funded, climate response monitoring network. Continuous, real-time data are collected at each well site. Sites are selected primarily to monitor changes in groundwater levels in response to changes in precipitation.
KDOW-ITAC monitoring sites comprise a statewide network of water wells and springs sampled at various intervals to obtain baseline ambient groundwater-quality data in different aquifer types and physiographic regions of Kentucky. Details about network operation since initial monitoring began about 1995, such as changes in site locations, sampling frequency, and analyzed constituents, are documented at Kentucky Interagency Groundwater Monitoring Network. Groundwater-quality data collected for each site are accessible by searching the Groundwater Data Repository.
