Blizzard Observations

...Evaluation of Blizzard Conditions for the March 14, 2017
Winter Storm...

The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to
further verification by the National Weather Service.

A blizzard occurred over portions of northeast New Jersey, the
Lower Hudson Valley, and interior southern Connecticut on March
14 2017, during the morning and early afternoon.

The official definition of a blizzard:
-Sustained winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35
mph.
-Considerable falling and/or blowing snow
-Visibility frequently reduced to less than 1/4 mile
-Occurs for three hours or more.

When reviewing whether a particular location had blizzard
conditions, visibilities equal to 1/4 mile were counted. This is
because these are quite low for an automated visibility sensor to
detect.

At Stewart Airport (Newburgh, NY), blizzard criteria was met from
945 AM to 345 PM. Erroneous gusts to 57 mph may have been
reported during the first two hours, but nearby observations
supported winds 35 mph or greater. The observation only reported
blowing snow, but snow was verified by radar.

At Oxford-Waterbury Airport (Waterbury, CT), blizzard criteria was
met from 840 AM to 1155 AM and 130 PM to 435 PM. Snow was
confirmed by radar.

While Poughkeepsie/Dutchess County Airport (Poughkeepsie, NY) is
just outside our forecast area, the observation is supportive of
conditions that occurred in nearby Putnam County NY. Blizzard
criteria were generally met between 1218 PM and 531 PM. The
present weather sensor failed, but snow was verified by radar.

While Sussex Airport (Sussex, NJ) is just outside our forecast
area, the observation is supportive of conditions that occurred in
western Orange County as well as western Pasaic County. Blizzard
criteria were generally met between 930 PM and 253 PM.

At White Plains, NY, Danbury, CT, Meriden CT, Caldwell, NJ,
Teterboro, NJ, Bridgeport CT, and New Haven, CT, the highest winds
occurred when the precipitation was mixed and/or light snow.
Visibilities were all over the required criteria of 1/4 mile or
less during the strongest winds.
