The National Weather Service in New York NY has confirmed a Microburst /Straight Line Wind Damage/ near New Providence in Union County New Jersey on June 28 2016. The microburst occurred along Central Avenue, within roughly one- eighth of a mile in either direction from the intersection with South Street. The microburst lasted only around 2 minutes and had a maximum estimated windspeed of 70 mph. Most of the downed trees and tree limbs showed sign of rot and decay. There was some siding observed to be peeled back along one home. This information can also be found on our website at weather.gov/NYC. For reference... A microburst is a convective downdraft with an affected outflow area of less than 2 1/2 miles wide and peak winds lasting less than 5 minutes. Microbursts may induce dangerous horizontal and vertical wind shears...which can adversely affect aircraft performance and cause property damage. Straight-line winds are generally any wind that is not associated with rotation...used mainly to differentiate them from tornadic winds. $$ |
