Overview
China’s immunization program has dramatically reduced the number of vaccine-preventable diseases. Looking forward progress towards the targets agreed in the Regional Framework for Global Vaccine Action Plan faces challenges.
China has reached over 90% coverage for immunization, however, hard-to-reach areas can have much lower coverage rates, leaving population groups unvaccinated and vulnerable to preventable outbreaks. As in many countries, public response to well-publicized vaccine incidents highlight the need to maintain public confidence and high rates of participation in the immunization program.
The WHO China office provides technical assistance to support universal immunization coverage, to eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and rubella, and to contribute to global polio eradication. We do this by sharing best practice and evidence-based knowledge and by consulting on optimised vaccination schedules and practices. WHO China office advocates for the inclusion of new vaccines into the public schedule (e.g. Hib, PCV, rotavirus, HPV) and we harness the power of social media to spread accurate and useful information about vaccines, educating the public about the importance of immunization.
