Reducing sodium in food and excessive salt intake

Overview

High blood pressure is a major health concern in China affecting over 270 million Chinese adults. A primary risk factor is over consumption of sodium. Salt is the main source of sodium in the Chinese diet, primarily added on home cooking although consumption of prepared or packaged food are increasing. According to the Healthy China Action 2019-2030 targets, the daily salt intake for a healthy adult should be reduced to 5 grams. However, the average consumption is 10.5 grams a day, more than doubled the target level.

To help people reduce their salt intake as well as promote a healthy food environment, the China Office works through communications campaigns to increase public awareness and equip home cooks and consumers with tools to lighter and healthier foods. In the meantime. WHO China is also working to support the government and food industries to improve the food environment through policies and regulations.
