In an attempt to explain the paradox, researchers used models emphasizing reference-dependent preferences, relative income, and satiation point models (see for instance: Veenhover, 1991; Diener et al., 1993; and Clark, Frijters and Shields, 2008 for a review paper). Moreover, unlike most previous findings, he found that the effect holds across the full range of international incomes, and it is even slightly stronger among rich countries.
