A Appendix The income and debt information is self-reported, resulting in a small number of individuals with inconsistent responses. Individuals who report having other debt, but do not provide a value of the debt, are excluded. Any individual who reports not having other debt is assigned a debt of zero and included in the analysis. A similar procedure is used with remaining mortgage principal. If an individual reports having a mortgage, but does not report a value, the individual is excluded. Any individual who reports not having a mortgage is assigned a value of zero, this group consists almost exclusively of renters and individuals who own their residence outright. Note that both categories of debt are calculated at the household level, so even if the individual’s name is not e.g. on the mortgage and thus does not officially own the debt, the debt is assigned to the individual.]
