Health Economics Section Panel Discussion on Food Is Medicine

Featuring Hollie Raynor (University of Tennessee), Michelle Shippy (Indiana Department of Health), and Wen You (University of Virginia)
The Health Economics Section is hosting a virtual panel discussion on “Food is Medicine: Exploring the Intersection of Nutrition and Health Policy”. The event will feature experts from diverse fields of health economics, public policy, nutrition science, and policymakers to explore how food can play a pivotal role in improving health outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Panelists will discuss the latest research, successful interventions, and the challenges in implementing food-as-medicine initiatives at both individual and systemic levels.

Call for Volunteers: Senior Discussant for Selected Presentations - Paper Sessions

Members wishing to get involved may volunteer for an essential role as a senior-level discussant for Selected Paper Sessions at our 2025 AAEA & WAEA Joint Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, July 27-29, 2025.  A discussant will be assigned to a Selected Presentation Paper Session whose topic area correlates with the discussant’s expertise.  The discussant would be tasked with reviewing the papers within their session, provide constructive feedback and stimulate discussion.  The goal is to make these sessions more impactful and meaningful.

Automatic Milking Systems: Labor-Savings Route or Costly Gamble for Dairy Farmers?

Alejandro Gutiérrez-Li, Grace Melo, Shaheer Burney, Cesar Escalante, and Shree Ram Acharya
Automatic milking systems (AMS) can greatly impact labor dynamics on U.S. dairy farms. Survey results reveal that AMS adopters require fewer full-time workers, rely more on part-time labor, and face higher wages, highlighting labor cost variability and adoption barriers. Our findings have implications for policies addressing labor shortages and supporting mechanization.

AAEA at 2026 ASSA Annual Meeting

Call for submissions: AAEA invited paper sessions at the 2026 ASSA Annual Meeting

President-Elect Brian Roe is soliciting proposals and suggestions for AAEA invited paper sessions at the 2026 Allied Social Sciences Association (ASSA) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, January 3-5, 2026.

The objective of AAEA sessions at the ASSA Annual Meeting is to share new knowledge of interest to economists. The AAEA encourages sessions that will draw widely from ASSA attendees, including sessions jointly sponsored with other ASSA member associations.

All speakers and discussants must be members of AAEA, although the proposal may request a membership waiver under special circumstances. Participants must register for the ASSA meeting.

Agricultural History Society Award for Public Engagement

The Award Winner(s) will demonstrate:

  • Depth of historical understanding and the ability to communicate historical context to non-specialists while preserving essential details and complexity
  • Creativity in approach appropriate to the intended audience
  • Evidence of effectiveness appropriate to the activity
  • If the nomination is for a body of work, evidence of professionalism and leadership in promoting public engagement in the fields of agricultural and rural history
