  • CT Recreational Angler Interviewer

    The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is seeking qualified applicates for the position of Recreational Angler Interviewer in Connecticut. As a Recreational Angler Interviewer, the incumbent will conduct the field portion of the Access-Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS). This important research study, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), conducts face-to-face interviews with marine recreational anglers. Recreational Angler Interviewers will travel to assigned sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences, and collect a variety of information, and (when possible) weigh, measure, and identify fish by species name that the anglers have caught. Assigned sites can include beaches, banks, piers, docks, jetties, and access points for private, charter, and head boats, including marinas, boat ramps and other points of entry to marine waters. Recreational Angler Interviewers are responsible for completing field intercept forms with anglers at the various sites in addition to completing several other required study forms.

    Specific duties include:

    • Successfully complete training, including survey procedures and fish identification tests
    • Follow documented APAIS survey procedures
    • Travel to assigned fishing access sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences
    • Occasionally work on head boats (for-hire vessels) for at-sea data collection
    • Identify key species of fish with extreme accuracy and with little aid of field materials (up to 25 or more different species; guides and training will be provided)
    • Complete the survey on a tablet and submit it to the supervisor as instructed
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the recreational fishermen
    • Answer questions and explain the importance of this federally-funded study
    • Other duties as assigned

  • DE MRIP Field Technician

    The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is seeking qualified applicates for the position of Recreational Angler Interviewer in Delaware. As an MRIP Field Technician, the incumbent will conduct the field portion of the Access-Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS). This important research study, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service, conducts face-to-face interviews with marine recreational anglers. Field staff will travel to assigned sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences, collect a variety of information, and (when possible) weigh, measure, and identify fish by species name that the anglers have caught. Assigned sites can include beaches, banks, piers, docks, jetties, and access points for private, charter, and head boats, including marinas, boat ramps and other points of entry to marine waters. Field staff are responsible for entering field intercept questions with anglers at these sites via an electronic tablet.

    Specific duties include:

    • Successfully complete training, including survey procedures and fish identification tests
    • Follow documented APAIS survey procedures
    • Travel to assigned fishing access sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences
    • Occasionally work on head boats (for-hire vessels) for at-sea data collection
    • Identify key species of fish with extreme accuracy and with little aide of field materials (up to 25 or more different species; guides and training will be provided)
    • Complete survey electronically and upload data within 24 hours
    • Conduct For-Hire Telephone Survey and submit pre-validations of for-hire vessels
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife and the recreational fishermen
    • Answer questions and explain the imporance of this federally-funded study;

  • Environmental Police Officer Trainee (DEM)

    The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Divsion of Law Enforcement is seeking applicants to fill the position of Environmental Police Office Trainee. In the Division of Law Enforcement of the Department of Environmental Management to assist, as a Trainee, in the enforcement of a variety of state laws pertaining to the protection and conservation of the natural resources of the state; and to do related work as required. Works under the supervision of a superior officer, who makes specific work assignments; work is reviewed in process and upon completion for conformance to instructions and provisions of law, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Fisheries Specialist - Quantitative Ecologist

    The Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fisheries Specialist - Quantitative Ecologist. Specifcally, we are looking for a skilled quantitative ecologist familiar with modeling and statistical analysis of wildlife and fish populations. The ideal candidate will be experienced with both Bayesian and frequentist statistical modeling, be comfortable writing code for common statistical programs (i.e., R) and be willing to work on both terrestrial and aquatic (freshwater and marine) data sets. This position will work directly with both the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RI DEM) Division of Marine Fisheries and the Division of Fish and Wildlife. The Quantitative Ecologist will be responsible for leading analytical tasks directed to inform wildlife and fisheries management and conservation for the State of Rhode Island. 

    Specific duties include:

    1. Use quantitative tools and analyses to assess the performance of various management scenarios for informing fisheries and wildlife management bodies.
    2. Conduct ecosystem analyses for Rhode Island state waters to inform ecosystem-based fisheries management plans for marine and anadromous species.
    3. Develop analytical tools and conduct data analyses to support terrestrial wildlife management in Rhode Island. 
    4. Develop data-rich and/or data poor stock assessment models for marine resources managed by the State of Rhode Island or through interstate management. 
    5. Design wildlife population and or density estimation models.
    6. Produce reports and peer-reviewed publications which summarize project data and findings.
    7. Present findings at relevant fisheries science, natural resource management, and wildlife conservation forums.
    8. Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Maine Marine Patrol Officer

    The Maine Department of Marine Resources Law Enfrocement is seeking applications to fill the postion of Marine Patrol Officer. This is investigative and protective services work involving the enforcement of marine resource conservation law, rules, regulations, and other laws within the jurisdiction of the Maine Marine Patrol. Responsibilities include patrolling an assigned coastal area by land and aboard patrol vessels, protecting marine resources, coastal property, and the public; enforcing applicable laws; and investigating complaints and incidents.

  • MRIP Field Technician Contractor

    Tri-State Staffing is seeking to fill four variable seasonal positions assisting the Maine Department of Marine Resources from April to November to assist in conducting recreational saltwater fishing surveys. Work includes in-person surveying of anglers for participation, catch, and effort data, shore-side and possibly on head boat trips; surveying shark/tuna-permitted boat captains; and possibly assisting in a phone-based survey of fishing charter and head boats.

    This is technical work requiring field skills relevant to marine sciences, with collection and recording of data for resource management. Field work is performed independently according to highly detailed procedures for gathering and recording a range of data.

    Extensive daily travel in coastal areas of Maine, primarily from Bath to Kittery, is required. A biweekly meeting at DMR in Boothbay Harbor will be required. Weekly hours will vary, though effort will be made to distribute assignments that support full or part-time status. The work week is highly variable and includes Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and two to three weekdays off. Daily work hours often extend beyond normal 8am- 5pm work hours and is in all types of weather, from inclement to blue sky days, high heat to chill.

  • MRIP Seasonal Data Field Technician

    The Virginia Marine Resources Commission is seeking applications to fill the postion of MRIP (Marine Recreational Information Program) Seasonal Data Field Technician. The Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) is an assessment tool used by NOAA Fisheries to collect fishing effort and demographic data collected in-person by fisheries interviewers to produce recreational catch and effort estimates. Fisheries interviewers shall be required to attend all state specific training, as well as an annual 2-day training course provided by the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistical Program. Training will include learning detailed procedures and protocols for the interview portion of the survey as well as the correct methods for identifying fish species and collecting biological data (length and weight). Data is collected utilizing digital tables, and experience with digital data platforms is preferred. Shifts are worked in 6-hour intervals plus travel time. Fisheries interviewers shall be responsible for recording their on-site time as well as miles traveled. These positions offer flexible work scheduling. Fisheries interviewers are considered independent contractors and will be employed through an outside agency.

    The ideal candidate will have knowledge and /or experience of recreational fishing as well as local water ways. Candidates with science, fisheries, or angling backgrounds that are interested in entry-level field work are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is ideal for those looking to gain fisheries science and management experience at an entry level.
