Welcome to the UTSA School of Art. As the founding director, I aim to propel the School of Art into exciting new territories as we continue to work alongside the rich community art scene in San Antonio. Our programs are designed to afford opportunities for students to expand their learning experience beyond our fantastic course offerings. We offer moments of enrichment both in the studio with our esteemed faculty and out in the real world where they can teach kids, community classes, and workshops on our Southwest campus in the heart of downtown, as well as gain experience by volunteering or interning with some of our prestigious museums, art centers, and galleries around the city.
At the UTSA School of Art, our goal is to give students a strong foundational base across artistic media while challenging them to build their conceptual chops. Students also engage in the study of art history and critical theory in the classroom, in museums, and in the streets of the city, becoming conversant in the language of visual art. By giving students the space to experiment in the fertile soil outside of their comfort zones, we allow them to build strong skills and conceptual thinking that will propel their artmaking to new places and prepare them to take on the world.
The School of Art serves both undergraduate and graduate students through degrees in B.A, B.F.A and M.F.A degrees in Studio Art and B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art History and Criticism. We engage with San Antonio’s diverse community through hosting visiting artist and scholar lectures, curating exhibitions in galleries on Main and Southwest campuses, and by being visible through participation in programming at San Antonio arts institutions throughout the year. We are here to build the next generation of great artists, educators, and scholars
