CPB Statement on the Death of José Fajardo, former CEO of Hawai’i Public Radio

December 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 20, 2024) – The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) released the following statement from President and CEO Patricia Harrison regarding the death of José A. Fajardo, former CEO of Hawai’i Public Radio.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of José A. Fajardo, former CEO of Hawai’i Public Radio. Jose's leadership and dedication to public broadcasting helped shape Hawai’i Public Radio into the esteemed institution it is today, and his grace and courage after receiving a devastating ALS diagnosis remain an inspiration to us all.

“José started his career as an announcer at KNCT-FM in Killeen, Texas, and became general manager of KNCT-FM TV in central Texas before becoming president and CEO of WMFE in Orlando. In 2016, he became president and CEO of Hawai’i Public Radio, where he led the organization through completion of its statewide transmitter network and programming and staffing expansions. Despite industry-wide financial turbulence, José led Hawai’i Public Radio to financial growth and stability with even stronger public service, including the expansion of local journalism and digital properties.

“Diagnosed with ALS in 2021, José opted not to let the disease define him or withdraw as he lost mobility. He became an inspiration in Hawai’i and across public media as he remained optimistic, used his position to advocate for those living with ALS, and continued to work as long as he could.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to José's family, friends, and colleagues. May his legacy continue to inspire and his memory be a source of comfort to all who knew him.”
