सोचने बैठें तो लगेगा िक ‘िफ़ल्म अध्ययन’ नामक अकादिमक अनुशासन की शुरुआत तो वाक़ई िफ़ल्म-पत्रकािरता... more सोचने बैठें तो लगेगा िक ‘िफ़ल्म अध्ययन’ नामक अकादिमक अनुशासन की शुरुआत तो वाक़ई िफ़ल्म-पत्रकािरता से ही हुई। चूँिक उन्हीं पन्नों में ग़ायब िसने-रीलों और िसने- निमार्ण-केंद्रों की िनशािनयाँ मौजूद हैं, चुनांचे एक और वजह बनती है िक िफ़ल्मी पत्रकािरता की इितहास-लेखन-परंपरा को आगे बढ़ाया जाय, उसे थोड़ी और गहराई दी जाय। रंगभूिम और िचत्रपट के प्रकाशन के पहले िहन्दी की मुख्यधारा की पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में िसनेमा से जुड़ी िछट-पुट रपटें, लेखन और िचंतन िमलने लगते हैं और उनके िवचारधारात्मक पक्ष पर िवद्वानों ने क़लम चलाई है। यह परचा इलाहाबाद के चाँद के मूलत: राष्ट्रवादी, प्रगितशील, नारीिप्रय और जनवादी रुझान को िदल्ली के िचत्रपट की िफ़ल्मिप्रयता, िहन्दीिप्रयता और यथार्थप्रियता के प्रति आग्रह में तब्दील होने की कहानी कहता है। दोनों के उद्देश्य मुख़्तिलफ़ थे, लेिकन सातवें दशक में शुरु होनेवाली माधुरी की तरह ही चौथे दशक की शुरुआत में िनकलने वाले िचत्रपट का िमज़ाज भी सुधारवादी ही था, क्योंिक सवाक िसनेमा की सद्य:प्राप्त लोकिप्रयता िहन्दी के बुिद्धजीिवयों के सामने एक साथ ढेर-सारी चुनौितयाँ पेश करती हैं। िफ़ल्मों में महिलाओं के प्रवेश और उसकी शर्तों पर; कथानक के स्रोत व चयन पर; कथोपकथन व गीतों की भाषा के स्वरूप पर; दृश्यिवधान और संगीत के औिचत्य-अनौिचत्य पर तथा िसने-तकनीक व व्यापार के नानािवध पक्षों पर बारीक बहसें होती हैं, िजन पर लािज़मी तौर पर ‘स्वदेशी’ वैचािरकी का साया है, लेिकन इसे एक शैक्षिणक परियोजना के रूप में भी देखा जा सकता है। श्रव्य- द्रष्टव्य माध्यम को िप्रंट माध्यम में ले जाने की, सामग्री को साहित्यिक छननी से छानकर शोधने की, और िसने-व्यवसाय को बाइज़्ज़त व्यवसाय और पािरवािरक पेशा बनाने की अद्भतु आरंिभक कोिशशें थीं ये पत्रिकाएँ। शायद उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण है इन पत्रिकाओं की साज-सज्जा, िवज्ञापन-शैली और भाषायी प्रयोगधिमर्ता की पड़ताल करना, िजससे िफ़ल्म-पित्रकािरता की कड़ी दक्षिण एिशया की बाक़ी जनरंजक-संस्कृतियों से जोड़ी जा सके।

The essay captures the excitement experienced at a trip to Radio Ceylon or Sri Lanka Broadcasting... more The essay captures the excitement experienced at a trip to Radio Ceylon or Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, undertaken in the company of veteran film music listeners, in February 2020. Listening to popular film music involved passionate, popular defiance of the government policy of ban on film sangeet at All India Radio (1952-57). Similarly, broadcasting was a sustained, collaborative and creative enterprise between listeners and such dedicated broadcasters as Ameen Sayani, Vijay Kishore Dubey, Gopal Sharma, Manohar Mahajan and several others. The essay argues that labour of listening was much more than merely sending farmaishes and hearing one's name being announced over the ether - it was about painstaking creation of a databases on film music.
