Diagram amlinellol o system o bwlïau.

Olwyn ar echel yw pwli (hefyd: 'chwerfan') sy'n cynnal cêbl neu wregys dynn, cebl sy'n symud neu'n newid cyfeiriad ar hyd ei gylchyn.[1] Defnyddir pwlïau (chwerfanau) mewn gwahanol ffyrdd i godi llwythi trwm, i roi grym ar rywbeth ac i drawsyrru pŵer o un lle i le arall. Yn aml, mae gan y pwli ricyn, neu hollt yn y cylchyn sy'n cadw'r rhaff neu'r cebl ayb rhag llithro.

Nododd Hero o Alexandria'r pwli fel un dyfais neu beiriant syml, allan o chwech, a ddefnyddid i godi pwysau.[2] Gellir gosod pwliau at ei gilydd i ffurfio pwli a rhaff er mwyn rhoi mantais mecanyddol, er mwyn hwyluso'r gwaith o godi pethau trwm. Gellir hefyd eu gosod fel rhan i drawsyrru pwer mewn dull gwregys a tsiaen.[3][4]
