I don't currently have access to the tools I would need to stretch my own canvases. This means, if I want to work on something sturdy, I'm limited in size (since I also don't have access to tons of money which could be spent on shipping large prestretched canvases). Since neither power tool

Caitlin Winner on Instagram: "Three reasons and a pro tip: 1. Painting unstretched gives me compositional flexibility. I can change the final dimensions of the painting as I work. It’s not uncommon that I add on to the bottom or crop in from the sides. I usually cut the canvas with a few inches of buffer on all sides to allow for these changes. 2. It’s easier for me to maneuver large unstretched canvas on my own compared to the same size over stretcher bars. I use thumbtacks to move the canvas up or down on the wall so that the section I am painting on is at chest height. 3. Unstretched canvas takes up less room than stretched paintings, this can make for easier storage and cheaper shipping. Follow the link in my bio to download it. More on canvas: I found this particular canvas through Raymar Panels. They make painting panels that I use for plein air painting. After trying a few different textures and primers I landed on the canvas I liked best and now I order it by the yard. I paint on unstretched canvas so that I have more flexibility in the exact crop and composition while the painting is in progress.
