Welcome to the UNESCO Chair on Technology, Internationalization and Education (TIE)
Today, driven by globalization, technological advancements and knowledge-based economy pressures, many educational reforms are underpinned by emerging policy-level commitments to contemporary global-supranational knowledge and skills. Indeed, the dynamic, technological 21st century environment results in youth living and studying in a global, cosmopolitan world and using novel tools, devices, and skills, thus forcing education systems to adapt to a new internationalized way of teaching and learning. In addition, the increasing accountability pressures (enforced by international comparisons undertaken by supra-national bodies like the OECD) motivate governments to improve their education systems’ quality. The mounting pressures of internationalization emerge in addition to the existing pressures of nationalization, thus forcing education systems to comply with opposing influences and trends that can be expressed in various ways within the nations’ education systems.
This UNESCO chair aims to promote development of research and practices through the understanding of the internationalization processes in schools as well as in higher education and to shed light on those complex processes in different contexts by engaging in research, teaching, and community-related activities. This UNESCO chair is also focused on development of research and practices concerning technological transformations that have tremendous effect on the world of education. Achieving these objectives, will enhance the development of joint efforts directed toward improved scientific understanding of technological transformations and internationalization in education, to better prepare future students and pupils for the challenges of the 21st century.
The Chair is part of UNITWIN / UNESCO Chairs Programme which promotes international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative work.
