Book
editThis book contains more information about the ship, and 'alledged' paranormal activites! Good read too, especially with the annotations of unknown origin.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.193.87.5 (talk • contribs) 09:44, 23 July 2009

Debunked hoax
editEstelle Hargraves at skittish library has debunked this 'mystery': http://skittishlibrary.co.uk/the-myth-of-the-ourang-medan-ghost-ship-1940/ . Reddit discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnsolvedMysteries/comments/3z5713/pretty_sure_ive_solved_the_mystery_of_the_ourang/?st=iqnpsxc6&sh=fb6e145e
Silvio Scherli has likely fabricated the February 1948 story in The Locomotive, or De locomotief: Samarangsch handels- en advertentie-blad, loosely based on true (and far less mysterious) events in November 1940.
Shouldn't someone put the above into the article? Wikipedia is not about prolonging hoaxes? Sjoerd22 (talk) 15:51, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
More sources
editMore sources which explain Silvio Scherli's early versions of the story, its evolution by him, and his defence of the story:
- How Stuff Works
- Skeptoid
- Silent Thrill blog
- Fortean Times
- 1940 Il Piccolo article, with two photos – the sinking ship, and a ship's officer said to be dead
- 1940 L'Illustrazione Italiana article, with two of Scherli's photos (one the same as before, one new) both higher quality that the above – the ship's officer, and two of the crew (also said to be dead)
- 1941 China Mail article
- 1941 followup Il Piccolo article, about a survivor from the Ourang-Medan, who reveals what happened

Inclusion in Category:Maritime incidents in 1947
editThis article is currently in Category:Maritime incidents in 1947, but given the severe doubt as to whether the ship existed, and the fact that a 1940 date for the incident has also been suggested (and indeed the story seems to have originated in 1940, making the 1947 date very unlikely), I think it probably should be removed from this category.
