Abbreviations

edit

I saw your comment about abbreviations at the article on the Trading with the enemy Act. Although I think the use of the abbreviation there was clear, I do agree about the over-use of abbreviations -- and the over-use (which is really a mis-use) on the internet is just appalling. Using abbreviations should HELP, not hurt understanding. I often find abbreviations used in Wikipedia -- an encyclopedia, of all things -- without any explanation as to what the abbreviations mean. I correct that when I see it. Wikipedia (even the English version) is read by people all over the world, and no one should be expected to automatically know what an abbreviation stands for. Many of us (Americans, for example) seem to falsely assume that everyone in the world knows what we mean by "DOJ" or "DEA" or "FBI." The first time an abbreviation is used in an article, an explanation should be given as to what the abbreviation stands for.

Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia.... Famspear (talk) 22:47, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I am grateful for your edits and also am glad you are not upset with my changes. I try to stick to the straight and narrow, but there is much I need to learn before I can edit here at the pace I would like. I like your background, and I respect your work on the Wiki -you've already made a great impression on me. I could always use the help. Some of those edits were already there, I just edited the existing edits. You improved upon everything I did today so far. Brokor (talk) 23:01, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Compromise on Senate Report

edit

Suggested compromise in our dispute:

  • Remove the claim of complete termination.
  • Limit the article to a summary of the report and published commentary on it.
  • Add to the NEA article a summary of how it effects its "terminations" and the exceptions that it provides.

I can fill in details when I get home. 66.87.119.158 (talk) 18:15, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
