Grandma Moses

Hello Jane023, noticing your latest edit, I was wondering if a chronological order of the works woud make sense. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 05:31, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I wondered the same thing, but considering the 1973 catalog lists over 1500 paintings in chronological order and since that time many more paintings have come to light, I think size and type is probably more interesting. Most of her work is still in private hands and the copyright is locked up, so for Wikipedia readers probably the best step is just to make items for all the works sold above USD 100,000 combined with everything in public collections - these tend to be mostly bequests, so that number will only grow. I think all her "bestseller" subjects should have at least three examples from different time periods though. The most expensive ones from what I gather are the large ones that seem filled up with specific cameo scenes and those only became possible with outside support for frames and paint, which occurred later, while many find her works from the early 1940s to be most charming. So to answer your question, I really don't know. The two lists at the bottom are both incomplete and a bit random. I was thinking of making a list for just the ones that served as Christmas cards, but I can't find a Hallmark or other card list (Brundage?). These seem to be the ones that pop up most frequently in searches (because the xmas cards enjoy a collector's value apparently). Jane (talk) 07:30, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I get your point Jane. Looking at the paintings she made, I must say, I like them very much. A whole new exciting experience opening up to me. Thanks Jane   Lotje (talk) 15:30, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Frans Hals's Odesa Evangelists

edit

Hi Jane023, The two Frans Hals Evangelists that were in Odesa, Matthew and Luke, have apparently been spared the claws of the Russian bear. I saw them both recently at the current exhibition in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie. The catalogue says nothing about how they found their way to Berlin, but I don't suppose they will be back on display in Ukraine until the hostilities are over. If you know, or can find out, whether they will be kept and shown elsewhere in the meanwhile, perhaps you might like to add a note to their respective articles and to the List of Paintings. Best wishes --- Frans Fowler (talk) 19:28, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

good to know! Thanks for the tip and I will update the items. Jane (talk) 10:28, 3 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

Man with a hat painting by Rembrandt

edit

Hello Among the latest editions to the Digital Library of Kujavo-Pommerania from the University of Torún in Poland library is "Rembrandt : huit reproductions fac-simile en couleurs.

See https://kpbc.umk.pl/dlibra/publication/273700/edition/275078/content

If I haven't missed anything, the book contains two reproductions that do not occur on the list of RKD approved works by Rembrandt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_paintings_by_Rembrandt) nor in the catalogue raisonné of 1908 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt_catalogue_raisonn%C3%A9,_1908)

1) the self-portrait at the very beginning of the book (page scan 6) does not seem to be included in the list of his works. As it is it has resemblances with some of his Face of Christ studies, but still is not the same as any of these (at least to me)

2) a reproduction of a Rembrandt painting of a man with a hat (see page scan 61). As you have been making regular changes and additions to the Rembrandt resources on WP and Commons I would like to make you aware of this painting. Maybe you have an idea which of the yet unillustrated entries in the catalogue raisonné it belongs to - or happen to know of who actually the painter is if this painting is no longer attributed to Rembrandt.

Best Dirk from Germany Haendelfan (talk) 14:39, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for asking - I can't find the second one, but you can upload the catalog as a .pdf and make catalog references for the paintings. The first one looks like the Bredius painting which he probably bought after this was published.

The RKD says this catalog was published in 1942 but I think it was published in 1908. It was a popular art catalog series, see a few here commons:Category:Catalogues by Henry Roujon. Best Jane (talk) 13:44, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
