Black national championships
editTo my understanding black national championships are recognized as national championships, but it seems to be split whether or not they should be listed as 'national' in the head coaching record template. In Chennis Berry the Tigers have been named back-to-back champs and so I changed it from 'conference' to 'national' so I was wondering if there is a standard on if it should be listed as 'national.' Thank you Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 13:27, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure we every established a standard for black national championships in the head coaching record tables, but we should. It's probably best to open up a discussion at WT:CFB and ping ParkerLyme there. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:26, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Mass category removing
editHey @Jweiss11, I don't know if this something that is of any concern to anybody and I am unsure if it matters but a dear editor (User:Johnpacklambert) is removing coaches and players from large amounts of categories and replacing them with new ones (1, 2, and 3). In my opinion, while the new ones can be used just alongside the other categories and not in replacement of them. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 17:40, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- It is overcategorization to place people in 10 categories for the different teams thry were ob the coaching staff of. What is defining is the type of coach thry were, not in a large number of cases the particular team they worked for. Especially when thry were there only for one playing season. I am not removing any players from playing categories. That is an incorrect characterization of what I am doing. However when a person was offensive coordinator at 4 colleges, the fact that he was an offensive coordinator is defining, the 4 colleges he worked for in a lot of cases are not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:45, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Offensive and defensive coordinators are significant roles. Having such a role at a major program is IMO a defining characteristic. I'm interested to hear what others think. Probably best to seek consensus before making mass changes. Cbl62 (talk) 17:50, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Our consensus practice has always been that any assistant coaching position is defining enough for category inclusion. And that extends beyond just college football. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:52, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

- Tagging Rikster2 for visibility to this potential snowball of mass editing destruction. One rogue J.O. is unilaterally deciding to (potentially) uproot nearly 20 years' worth of multiple college sports wikiprojects' standardization by removing coaching categories because he, by himself, with no one else (as in nobody else on Wikipedia) doesn't like coaching categories on an article unless it's a head coaching cat. Be super, super mindful of this editor, Rikster. I will sound the f'ing horn to the all the college sports editors if this starts becoming an issue. SportsGuy789 (talk) 05:48, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Hey Jweiss--you're a football expert. Can you do something with this article, at least the first part? Thanks so much! Drmies (talk) 17:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Bythwood probably isn't notable for his football career. He lettered for the 1992 Miami Hurricanes football team, but doesn't appear to have been a regular starter, and I'm not seeing anything on Newspapers.com that would pass him on GNG for his college football career at Miami. "Picked as a free agent by the Cleveland Browns" is a funny sentence. Free agents aren't picked. Draftees are. Free agents get signed. Maybe Bythwood was invited to training camp by the Browns in 1994, but he never played in the NFL. If he isn't notable for his music career, the article should be AfD'd. Jweiss11 (talk) 18:06, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking a look. The "picked" thing may have been mine, and I see now that it's really a draft word, of course. I was trying to make *something* out of nothing--did you see the history? Thanks again, Drmies (talk) 19:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, it was promotional junk before you pared it down. I don't think there's a something worth saving here, unless Bythwood is notable for his music. But that seems doubtful as well. Jweiss11 (talk) 20:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- I'm actually surprised that there's so many such junk biographies around of NFL players--or supposed NFL players. Just ran into another: Reggie Stephens (cornerback). Drmies (talk) 02:04, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- Reggie Stephens is a legit notable NFL player. That's just a poorly-formed article. I'm working on cleaning it up and adding a couple references. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:32, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Navbox collapsing
editI've seen you working in this area before so I would like your thoughts. I'm not really sure if "Links to related articles" is the best title for these. First off, navboxes don't even appear on mobile so people have a hard enough time even knowing they exist, and "Links to related articles" makes it looks a header for the categories, given that the purple/whiteish box kind of blends into the background and categories are also links to related articles. How about just "navigational boxes" or something? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:03, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

editSorry for the style edit. Was just updating the mdy process. I usually need at least ref field changes to feel like updating the mdy date being a worthwhile edit. I went ahead and added two verifiable refs from the school and the SI Vault. Red Director (talk) 18:24, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- Red Director, thanks for making those additions. That way I had formatted those newspapers.com citations was actually somewhat irregular, so I made edits to order the fields as they display. What is your mdy process? Jweiss11 (talk) 18:40, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- Some editors just update the month with no substantive changes to the article. I usually at least need at least one or two improvements to make the edit worthy in my opinion. Most of the ones I do that on have substantive changes, like the date structure is off on many refs. The ref fields being reordered is part of the 'normalization' tool on the ProveIt tool. That usually is the bare minimum for me to make those changes. To be honest, I do not love those changes but some articles are so small that I feel like I won't be on their page again because someone else is unlikely to add anything until they do something noteworthy, which is doubtful for many, or their death down the line. - What's the point of updating the month if substantive changes to the refs haven't been made or new refs haven't been added since the placement of the mdy template? Jweiss11 (talk) 19:03, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- That is why an edit for the sake of the month being current makes the edit seem like a waste in my opinion. I have seen that plenty over the years. Usually the main purpose of the mdy, and dmy for that matter, edit is to get all of the refs on the same date structure, especially have a lot of content and verification have been added. Just got in a lull on editing some older Tennessee players and later saw no dates changed on Grubb. I will take better care in the future and add a little more to what is acceptable in my opinion. Been on the Vols players for over a month now. Red Director (talk) 19:16, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Conference standings
edit@Jweiss11, I am working on John J. Knight of Bethany (WV) and from 1930 to 1934 they are listed twice under the Tri-State Conference and the West Virginia Athletic Conference...and my question is which one should I use for the record table. Thanks! Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 23:30, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thetreesarespeakingtome, you want to report both conferences. See Ed Kubale or Larry Mullins for an example of how I've handed that. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Editor of the Week
editEditor of the Week | ||
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project) |
User:WikiOriginal-9 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- I would like to nominate Jweiss11 to be Editor of the Week. Jweiss11 has been editing since 2005 and is one of the most prolific Wikipedians of all time, contributing to college sports articles for almost two decades. He has amassed over 500,000 edits (#42 all time), cleaning up an untold number of infoboxes and making pages conform to style guidelines. A prominent member of the College football WikiProject. He has created over 1,000 articles. What is also impressive about his contributions is that he has never used any semi-automated tools that I am aware of (even HotCat). He may very well have the most manual edits of all-time. Many editors wonder where the college football project would be without all his improvements. This nomination was seconded by BeanieFan11.

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
editHello Jweiss11,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

Can you explain, please, why you unilaterally moved this article? Without starting a move request (WP:REQMOVE)? Without asking for my input as the article creator? Without even an edit summary explaining the rationale for your unilateral action? Such high-handedness is really irritating. My research of the contemporary press reports while creating the article showed that CCSF was the common name of the football team -- as reflected in the cited sources. I am going to revert your move. If you disagree, please open a discussion (or better yet a move request) and don't make these unilateral moves. Cbl62 (talk) 20:19, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- This is similar to other situations where we refer to colleges/universities by their full names in article titles (City College of New York, University of Southern California), but use the acronym in article titles where the football team is most commonly known by such (CCNY Beavers, USC Trojans). Cbl62 (talk) 20:43, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Note also that the official football team logos use "CCSF". See here and here. See also football jersey here using "CCSF" and official football program merchandise here using "CCSF". Also the football program's web site (here) referring to the team as the CCSF Rams. Cbl62 (talk) 22:56, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- I thought the move would be non-controversial and the reason I moved it would be obvious. We already have Category:City College of San Francisco, whose subcats were created back in 2013 and 2017. In recent weeks I also created standings templates related to the program spanning 1948 to to 1996. My judgement based on the longitudinal analysis associated with creating all those templates was that the best short name for the school is "City College of San Francisco". You may note that the CCCAA standings short name the program as "San Francisco"; see https://3c2asports.org/sports/fball/2023-24/standings. "San Francisco" is also most common in newspaper reports of standings (1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990. "CCSF" is also used a bunch. I've seen "San Francisco City" and "SFCC" as well. "San Francisco" is not optimal here because of confusion with the San Francisco Dons; the two can't be disambiguated with a parenthetical state code. In short, we've got 50 standings templates and 3 categories using "City College of San Francisco" as the short name against the one article you created that uses "CCSF". These items should all be aligned. I changed the one outlier to align them. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:40, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- This is the first season article for the CCSF football program. What matters is not how the school has been referred to elsewhere on Wikipedia. What matters is how it has been referred to in common usage (i.e, in the real world), and I've outlined above the what appears to be predominant usage in the modern era (both in the press and by the program itself) is "CCSF". Also, how a program is commonly referenced somtimes changes over time: I've been looking at the undefeated 1948 team (starring Ollie Matson) and the most common usage then appears to have been "San Francisco City College" (strangely, since that wasn't the school's name) with "City College of San Francisco" (the new school name adopted in 1948) probably in second place. I'm not sure yet what's best for the 1948 team article, but we should respect, and abide by, the fact that the common usage can change over time. If there are questions/doubts as to how I've named a new article, drop me a note and let's discuss. Cbl62 (talk) 01:28, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- How it's referred to on Wikipedia is a reflection of how it's referred in the sources. Common usage can indeed change over time. It's possible that CCSF became the the most common name, say in 1991, and not before that. But we have the current definitive structured listings at the CCCAA website employing "San Francisco" as the program's short name, not "CCSF". When I created the 50 related standings templates in recent weeks, I performed a lot more source sampling and analysis than you did in the last day when you created the 1994 article. When you create and name a new article, you should probably take greater note of the related elements that already exist on Wikipedia and how they are named. It's obvious you didn't in this case. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:38, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- What I considered is common usage in the real world. That's what we're supposed to do. Cbl62 (talk) 02:07, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Also, I'd caution against over-reliance on standings templates. For example, you erroneously added 2012 Ventura College to Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/The Perfect Season (diff), presumably on the basis of a standings template from the end of the regular season. In fact, Ventura went on to lose to Bakersfield in the post-season 2012 Beach Bowl and thus didn't have a perfect season. Cbl62 (talk) 02:17, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- That's a pretty nit-picky, grasping-at-straws kind of comment there. I haven't even created standings templates for the 2012 juco season in Cali yet; just the two NJCAA ones you'll find here: Category:2012 junior college football standings templates. I happened to spot Ventura's 2012 record reported as 11-0 here and added it to the "Perfect Season" page, which isn't even a part of encyclopedia, but rather a project workspace. Apparently there was a forfeit? Jweiss11 (talk) 02:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Nothing "nit-picky" or "grasping at straws" about it. Ventura College lost in the 2012 post-season, not by forfeit but on the field. See Beach Bowl game coverage here/here. Cbl62 (talk) 02:41, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Of course it's "nit-picky" and "grasping at straws". Ventura reports a forfeit in their media guide, as in forfeited by Bakersfield as a later date after Bakersfield won on the field. I haven't looked to it, but even if the Ventura media guide is totally erroneous, it's absurd to criticize me for a quick note I made in a project workspace, and a working/drafty/back-of-the-envelope/bottom-of-the-page part of that workspace at that. Instead of taking to heart the legitimatize criticism I gave you above about applying greater consideration for how new articles you create mesh into the existing encyclopedia, you've decided to just reflexively swing back with some BS projection. Sad! Jweiss11 (talk) 02:55, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- "BS projection" -- Yikes! I was just noting that we should be careful not to over-rely on standings templates (which I had, apparently erroneously, assumed to be the source of the error). It was not meant as a personal attack -- let alone a "reflexive swing" or "BS projection". Onward! Cbl62 (talk) 03:12, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

- Regarding the 1948 article, I'm inclined to disregard "San Francisco City College" as a temporary blip that misapprehended the school's new name. And CCSF doesn't appear to have gained much traction at that point, so I'm inclined to go with "1948 City College of San Francisco Rams football team". Do we agree on that one? Cbl62 (talk) 03:36, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- I might also create an article for the 1946 team. At that time, the school was "San Francisco Junior College", and the team was the Rams. Do you favor 1946 San Francisco Junior College Rams football team or 1946 San Francisco Rams football team? I tend toward the former but would like to know what you think. Based on CCSF's claiming 1946 as a national championship, along with the win-loss record in the prior version of the coaching record here, I thought this was an undefeated season. Having uncovered the early-season loss to Long Beach City, CCSF's national championship claim appears to be ridiculous. I've lost interest in working further on it and have doubts as to whether it belongs in article space. If you or someone else wants to take it on, feel free to do so. editIn standings templates for the WSTCC (e.g., Template:1940 Wisconsin State Teachers College Conference football standings), Stout Institute is erroneously referred to as "Stout State". Cbl62 (talk) 10:32, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, this applies to the whole array of WIAC templates prior to 1955, when Stout Institute became Stout State College. Do you think the short name should be "Stout Institute" or just "Stout"? Also for 1913 to 1925, I have all the teams named "X... Normal". Jweiss11 (talk) 15:26, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
- "Stout Institute" sounds right to me. It's how we handled a similar case with Ferris Institute, and it creates a clearer break from later years when both schools became Stout State/Ferris State. Cbl62 (talk) 17:39, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
- I changed all the WIAC templates from 1926 to 1954 to "Stout Institute" plus all the relevant coach bio articles as well. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:08, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

2020-21 seasons
editWas there a discussion on what to do for the COVID-19 season in terms of coaching record tables? There about a million and a half different ways it has been expressed and I am unsure as to which should be done. I feel as though there are multiple feasible ways but I am unsure of a consensus which will tie into another point.
Option A, just stating no team
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Option B, no team + —COVID-19 like what was done with World War II teams that did not play
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Option C, no team + note
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
This goes along with the next point on if a season was played, should there be a note in the record table explaining that the games were played in the spring or just leave it without.
Third point, should 2020 be grayed out on the coaches navboxes like I did for:
{{Albany State Golden Rams football coach navbox}} {{Adams State Grizzlies football coach navbox}}
If we do that, that would also go in hand with what was done for World War II, but again, just a few questions for you/seeing if there was a consensus already. Thanks! Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 00:25, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- I, personally, believe option B is the best along with greying out the year in the navbox, although that will cause a small issue with {{Framingham State Rams football coach navbox}}'s Aynsley Rosenbaum and {{Azusa Pacific Cougars football coach navbox}}'s Rudy Carlton. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 00:27, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thetreesarespeakingtome, thanks for bringing this up. I don't believe there ever was a discussion about this. It's probably worth transferring this discussion to WT:CFB to get more input. Option B seems best to me as well for consistency with how we've treated the World Wars. As for Rosenbaum and Carlton, since they never logged a single decision as head coach on their ledger, I think they fall into the category of a Bo Rein at LSU. A few more unused templates
editHey, Template:2002 Minnesota Community College Conference football standings and Template:2003 Minnesota Community College Conference football standings are also unused. Gonnym (talk) 08:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Gonnym, yes, I was going to drop you a note about these templates. I would greatly appreciate if you refrain from nominating any of the templates found under Category:Junior college football standings templates. Some of these are still unused, but they all have sourcing and will all be put in use on multiple articles in near future. A couple other editors and I are working on building out this topic area, and it requires a bit of research and figuring out with the history of name changes of the various conferences and schools. Jweiss11 (talk) 13:56, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- I'll try and remember that. That said, it will be easier if you just don't create templates in the template namespace if you aren't planning on using them (create these in your user sandbox instead). They populate an unused template reports which I regularly check. Gonnym (talk) 16:12, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- User:Jonesey95/self-transcluded-templates has been updated and it shows around 125 unused standings templates. Gonnym (talk) 20:20, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- That report currently shows more than 150 such unused templates, many created since the above request was made. This includes {{1958 Texas Junior College Conference football standings}}, created on 23 June 2024. Please stop creating unused templates. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Again, please stop. I see that you have created some new, unused templates in the last 24 hours. Please ensure that all of the templates you have created are used before creating more. You can see the list of unused templates at User:Jonesey95/self-transcluded-templates. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:28, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I the most recent one I created was Template:1987 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference football standings. This will be used at both Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and 1987 junior college football season, when that article is created. The information in that template was also used be to flesh out Jack Welch (American football) and will be used to tweak Dick Foster. As I asked Gonnym above, I would greatly appreciate if you refrain from nominating any of the templates found under Category:Junior college football standings templates. All these templates will be used in at least two places when this effort is done. Jweiss11 (talk) 14:33, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Add the 100+ ones you already created before creating more. These are practically useless as no one will see them if they aren't used. The order should be first you create an article, then you add content to it, not the other way around. Gonnym (talk) 14:46, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- An editor who is building out this content area, like Cbl62 or Thetreesarespeakingtome, can find these templates and use them and/or pull references from them by navigating the templates category tree. Is easier to understand the scope of Pacific Southwest Conference, if I build out templates like Template:1964 Pacific Southwest Conference football standings first. Can you explain how temporarily unused templates like this are harmful? Jweiss11 (talk) 15:09, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- They obviously are not writing article in the speed you are creating templates. I remember checking one of the conferences that was still red and it was previously deleted as non-notable (don't remember which one). Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference doesn't look any better with basically almost no prose and only tables. Wikipedia is not meant as a statistical website see WP:NOTSTATS. Gonnym (talk) 15:40, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Gonnym, you didn't answer my question. You just pivoted to another oblique criticism. Do you really think Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference is not notable? Please answer the first unanswered question above (Can you explain how temporarily unused templates like this are harmful?), before you tackle that one. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 15:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- As for the previously deleted article, perhaps Central Conference? I have no idea if the article that was deleted back in 2012 is the same "Central Conference". There was no AfD. Jweiss11 (talk) 15:46, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- These are not temporary unused templates. 3 months is a lot. A template should be used near its creation. All templates require editorial time spent, even unused ones. That can be in verifying the sources of a template, fixing errors, WikiProject tagging and various others. In this specific case, each time you create a template and it unused, it ends up in a report, that has editors working on it daily. So we see a new template and check what it is, why it isn't transcluded. That can be checking the edit history to see when it was created and who created it; checking incoming links and checking links on the template that can help identify where it should be used but isn't. If there is a page, then checking that page's history to see if it was recently removed. This can take several minutes or more per template. And then you have repeated editors doing the same since the template is left on the report.
- None of us are working in a bubble and each of us affect other people. Having currently 150 unused templates, most of them created by you, is really wasting a lot of time.
- Regarding your question if I think it's notable, I don't know, I didn't check. But for me a red flag is when there is no actual main article (or one of very low quality). So 1966 junior college football season, but no Junior college football is red flag. Central Conference might be the one, but I think I saw one with a deletion discussion. Gonnym (talk) 15:56, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Regarding maintenance of unused templates, from spot checking a few of these templates, it would seem they all need fixing. Your references at Template:1966 Central Conference football standings for example, are in a noinclude tag. That is incorrect, the reference must be displayed in the article as that is where a reader is expecting to find it. Gonnym (talk) 16:02, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- I recommend that you and your colleagues create articles in Draft space, where they will typically be ignored for many months even if they are unsourced or non-notable, then create templates and transclude them into the draft articles, then move the drafts to article space once you believe that they will pass notability requirements. That workflow should work fine for all of you, and it will keep unused templates off of maintenance reports that are monitored by multiple editors. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:16, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Gonnym, three months is temporary in my book, especially when one is building out a large, multi-dimensional array of content. I haven't seen you or Jonesey95 make a single edit on any of the several hundred templates I've created in the recent months at Category:Junior college football standings templates. And most of those are in use. Frankly, I don't see much real work on either of your parts on this stuff. I previously asked you to give some latitude to everything in that branch. Perhaps, you should trust that one of the most tenured and prolific editors around knows what he's doing? As for the placement of sourcing in these templates, that reflects an editorial decision that is also common to thousands of templates under Category:American college football standings templates, all of which are in use outside of the junior college subcat. For example, at 1949 Wayne State Wildcats football team, I think it's a better approach from a maintenance and article development standpoint to have the reference found at Template:1949 Nebraska College Conference football standings copied and placed in the appropriate spot in that article, rather than transuded up from the template and not viewable/editable when editing the article. You're also moving the goalposts here from 1) some templates are unused to 2) the entire topic area isn't notable. It should be obvious from the thousands of citations in these templates and their associated articles, that there an abundance of substantive coverage of junior college football in major American newspapers. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:25, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- I wasn't the one placing a notability template on articles nor deleted pages based on that. Anyways, while
three months is temporary in my book
, we don't all operate by your book. We've both presented you with options on how to keep doing what you are doing without causing disruptions in other parts of the project - create these as drafts, as sub-pages in your userspace, don't create until actually ready. If you decide to ignore and keep doing what you do, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't end up repeatedly in TfD. Gonnym (talk) 09:22, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

- Nosferattus, can you explain which work we're talking about? Jweiss11 (talk) 16:56, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Looks like that report has 1913 templates. Some of that stuff looks pretty old. What's bad about Jweiss' templates in comparison to the others? Hmm ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 21:16, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Gonnym, Jonesey95, Nosferattus: Jonesey's report is now free from all templates that I have created. It would still be helpful for me to understand what the process is that you perform to vet new templates. Do you also do something to assess new templates that are in use? I'd be willing help with this process. Jweiss11 (talk) 21:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- It's a pretty simple report. It looks for templates that have no transclusions, after filtering out a bunch of pages that have no transclusions but are for one reason or another not worth looking at right now (e.g. they are subst-only, or used only occasionally, or historically don't get deleted at Templates for Discussion). Some have been around for a long time, and some are brand new. Being unused is a red flag, since not being used correlates well, although imperfectly, with not being useful, a deletion criterion at TfD. Being unused can also indicate recent vandalism to articles, or other misbehavior by editors, so it is useful to watch for changes to the report. There is a handful of editors who look through this report and nominate templates for deletion or merging when they do not appear to be useful.
- In many cases, deletion is not the right answer; I often find a place for the template to be used, or boldly redirect it to a similar template, or mark it as subst-only, or move it to a more appropriate namespace, or take other steps to clean up the page or its usage. As for WikiOriginal-9's valid question about there being 1,900 template pages on that report, that is true. That number is down from well over 10,000 in 2021 when our small group started this cleanup process. There is still work to do, and unused templates are added to the report every day, because Wikipedia editors are a busy bunch. The short version answer to "Why do we bother?" is that unused templates are a maintenance burden, requiring upkeep when syntax changes are needed or templates that they use are deleted or changed. It's better to take trash to the dump than to store it as if template space were a trash museum.
- I do not assess newly created templates unless they show up on a report that I monitor. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:08, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- I'll emphasize Jonesey's point about vandalism or changes to articles. The report helps find issues where a change happened to an article and a template was accidently removed. A year or so ago we handled I think 1k+ of Template:Attached KML sub-templates, either connecting them to the correct page or deleting as the editors of the related articles did not need them anymore. Currently we have a bunch of train route maps that are also handled in the same way. By reducing the list these kind of things are easier to spot and handle (this can be seen in other reports like Special:WantedCategories). Gonnym (talk) 19:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

AFDs
editHello, Jweiss11,
We can only Merge or Redirect articles to existing target articles so please don't propose a Merge or Redirect to a non-existing article (i.e. red link) unless you are planning on creating the article yourself before the AFD period is over. Otherwise, your argument will have to be discounted. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:02, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I am going to created it. Wrong warning, Liz. You should tell the nominator not to make obstructive XFDs. He was recently taken to ANI over that sort of behavior. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:04, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

So you must have spent a good bit of time writing that up, and searching through the newspapers for the games and the records probably took a lot of time as well--the result is a short article that will probably never get any bigger, and that will never get a lot of viewers. And yet I think that those kinds of articles, of which you must have churned out a hundred or more, are just really important, and maybe they're not the backbone of the encyclopedia, but they're an important chunk of the flesh. Thank you for those (often thankless) efforts. Drmies (talk) 01:41, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
Forks and spoons and such
edit@Jweiss11, for clarification, I agree with you that conference seasons should be Type I and year-by-year pages are used for individual teams.
So by what you're saying (let's use the American Rivers Conference)
The 2023 American Rivers Conference football season should be reworked from Type II to Type I and then each redirect should be moved to a teams individual seasons page:
- Excluding Wartburg because all the seasons for the last decade have been created
- Coe Kohawks football, 2020–present
- Central Dutch football, 2020–present
- Dubuque Spartans football, 2020–present
- Loras Duhawks football, 2020–present
- Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves football, 2020–present
- Simpson Storm football, 2020–present
- Buena Vista Beavers football, 2020–present
- Luther Norse football, 2020–present)
Then it should go FURTHER by having (Coe for example) have individual season redirects for
- Coe Warriors football, 1891–1899
- Coe Crimson football, 1900–1909
- Coe Crimson football, 1910–1919
- Coe Kohawks football, 1920–1929
- Coe Kohawks football, 1930–1939
- Coe Kohawks football, 1940–1949
- Coe Kohawks football, 1950–1959
- Coe Kohawks football, 1960–1969
- Coe Kohawks football, 1970–1979
- Coe Kohawks football, 1980–1989
- Coe Kohawks football, 1990–1999
- Coe Kohawks football, 2000–2009
- Coe Kohawks football, 2010–2019
- and then finally the Coe Kohawks football, 2020–present that was previously mentioned.
Then continuing with Coe since they were an independent from 1891 to 1920 they don't need a conference page to worry about and then from 1921 to 1996 there will be conference pages for the Midwest Conference. (i.e. 1926 Midwest Conference football season or 1994 Midwest Conference football season) Then from 1997 to 2016 there'd have to be Iowa Conference Type I football pages then from 2017 to now there would be American Rivers Conference pages.
This is thinking way into the future but I am trying to get a general idea of the format you wish to achieve a consensus on for lower division sports seasons. Thanks. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 15:43, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- Everything you laid out makes sense. I don't believe anyone has yet created a YYYY–present multi-season article, but the form you laid out looks good. In 2030, Luther Norse football, 2020–present could be renamed to Luther Norse football, 2020–2029, and Luther Norse football, 2030–present created. I would prioritize creating team decade articles (with individual season redirects pointing to those articles) over new conference season articles. And prioritizing the 1930s thru 1960s would help with the Template:Cfb link call crisis, as seen at 1949 college football season and elsewhere. When an article has more than like 250 cfb link call, including from transcluded standings templates, we get ugly errors like "
[[{{{school}}}|La Crosse State]]
". Jweiss11 (talk) 19:32, 10 July 2024 (UTC)- @Jweiss11 what about teams that have name changes mid-decade. Such as Coe in the 1920s from the Warriors to the Crimson to the Kohawks and Loras who go from St. Joseph's (IA) to Dubuque to Columbia (IA).
- Presently I have my set up (here) just having the title being what the team ends on for that given period. So Coe in the 1920s would just be Coe Kohawks football, 1920–1929 and for Loras who starts as St. Joseph's from 1907 to 1913 then Dubuque from 1914 to 1919 and have them bunched together as Dubuque football, 1907–1919 (which will need a clarification from Dubuque Spartans football, 1909–1919 but that's besides the point).Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 02:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Name in final season of interval is consistent with how we've named other things. Two Dubuque Colleges both in Dubuque, Iowa is confusing. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:52, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Draft:Buena Vista Beavers football, 1893–1899, Draft:Buena Vista Beavers football, 1900–1909, and Draft:Buena Vista Beavers football, 1910–1919 is what I have done so far. Not having Newspapers.com is very depressing at times like this. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 20:58, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- A few thoughts: 1) In these schedule tables, there's no reason not to write out "High School" in place of "HS" as there's plenty of room. 2) I think it's likely that Buena Vista adopted the "Beavers" nickname after 1899. 3) Whenever I read about Storm Lake, Iowa, I think always think of Storm's End. I signed up for a the free 7-day trial of Newspapers.com. Not sure if I'm going to pay for it after the trial. Perhaps, if I don't go to wikijail. :) Jweiss11 (talk) 23:34, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- 1) Gotcha, never been too sure about that. 2) I, too, think it is likely that the Beaver nickname came after 1899, but I do not have Newspapers.com free trial as I can't even get to that point in the website itself. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 00:07, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Just did a quick search on Newspapers.com and earlier reference to Buena Vista Beavers I could find was 1921. But it could have been adopted earlier than that. There's a bunch of yearbooks online here: https://www.iowaheritage.org/items/browse?collection=152. May be worth digging through those. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:15, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Thetreesarespeakingtome: a couple notes about the Buena Vista Beavers football drafts. First, Simpson should be disambiguated as "Simpson (IA)" to differentiate it from Simpson University in California. Second, for seasons when the conference was "Iowa Conference", short_conf in the infoboxes should be set to "Iowa" per 1927 Iowa State Teachers football team. Your Penn Quakers and Bucknell edits
editHi. Just wanted to thank you for working to upgrade the Penn Quakers and Bucknell articles. It was my hope when I made the few minor edits that I did to these articles several months ago to bring them up to start class that someone else with an interest might join in and make additional improvements. So, thank you! I do have a favor to ask, though. Rather than reverting my edits on every single article I worked on, could you please just make your revisions without reverting me? (I get notices about each of these articles whenever you work on them, and it's beginning to clutter my inbox.) Thanks in advance for your help. Kind Regards. - 47thPennVols (talk) 17:43, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Removal of Eastern time zone designation-football seasons
editWhile it's true that the Standard Time Act wasn't ratified until 1918, railroads instituted standard time in 1883 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_time_in_the_United_States). The removal of the designation from North Carolina Tar Heels football pages pre-WWI really only affects 5 games. My use of Eastern time zone was informed by what I saw on other pages. Would a designation such as local time be allowed? Jamesleegilbert (talk) 22:45, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've removed the timezone from a bunch of pre-1918 articles, because I didn't think it was accurate. We could use more research for stuff before 1918. Even a lot of the post-1918 stuff needs verification and tweaking. In the case of North Carolina, Chapel Hill was always in the Eastern Time Zone (or its forerunner?). But time zones get messy in placed like Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. For 1891 North Carolina Tar Heels football team, for example, was there sometime called an "Eastern" time zone in 1891? Or was it just local time? Jweiss11 (talk) 00:00, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- The five games you mention above were played outside what is now the Eastern Time Zone? Jweiss11 (talk) 00:01, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Template:1961 NCAA College Division independents football records and others
editHey, there are around 10 result tables like Template:1961 NCAA College Division independents football records that are unused (full list here). Can you take a look and see if you know where to add them to? Gonnym (talk) 10:13, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Gonnym, Template:1961 NCAA College Division independents football records and Template:1961 NCAA University Division independents football records should be deleted, as we recently re-organized the 1956 to 1961 college football seasons to remove NCAA's University and College Divisions. We still need to do some more cleanup around this for the other seasons in that interval. I only see three other college football standings templates on the list: Template:2012 NCAA Division II independents football records, Template:2013 NCAA Division II independents football records, and Template:2015 NCAA Division II independents football records. WP:IMGSIZELEAD
editI noticed that you regularly reduce the size of my lead infobox imgages from 300px to 285px (e.g., here), and thought I'd ask why. I've regularly set team photos to display at 300px which I understood to be acceptable per WP:IMGSIZELEAD. The difference is only five percent but I was wondering . . . Is there another policy/guideline (or calculation) that dictates the 285px setting that you are changing these to? Cbl62 (talk) 20:25, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- The width of 285 makes it so that the width of the entire infobox is the same as the standings template just below it, which I think looks a little neater. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:56, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

editHey, can you take a look at why these become unused?
- Template:2012 NCAA Division II independents football records
- Template:2013 NCAA Division II independents football records

Gonnym (talk) 10:57, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Sorry to jump in if it's unwelcome. I follow Jweiss11 because he is a great editor on topics that I care about.) I suspect it's because there was a successful RfD a few months ago that removed the article in which these templates were used. I helped to prevent the later proposed deletion of the article for NCAA Division I FCS independents. Jeff in CA (talk) 22:11, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- Jeff, no worries. You're always welcome to chime in. I think you're thinking of an NCAA Division III standings list that was deleted recently. I think what happened with these three templates is that Template:2012 NCAA Division II independents football records may have been in use at some point on 2012 NCAA Division II football season but was later replaced by Template:2012 NCAA Division II Super Region 2 independents football records and Template:2012 NCAA Division II Super Region 4 independents football records. @Jweiss11, If you have time / are interested I personally would appreciate it if you were able to find the yearly results as it would greatly help with my creation of Draft:Lees–McRae Bobcats football. Thanks! Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 18:30, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thetreesarespeakingtome, I started digging around Newspapers.com on this. Seems that Lees–McRae belonged to more than one conference, or that one conference went through some name changes/variations, between 1946 and 1970.
- "Carolina Junior College Conference" in 1948; see https://www.newspapers.com/article/news-and-record/156905132/
- "North Carolina Junior College Conference" in 1950; see https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-news-and-observer/156905452/
- "Region 10 Conference" in 1964; see https://www.newspapers.com/article/asheville-citizen-times/156904663/

- Yea I've also seen a "Western Carolina Conference" thrown about; see https://www.newspapers.com/article/johnson-city-press/46425238/, and being referred to as being a member of such from at LEAST 1947 to 1950 before the WJCAC is mentioned in 1951 at the earliest and 1960 the latest.
- North Carolina JCC and Western Carolina JCAC could be one in the same? Juco sure is fun. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 01:59, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

- Or they could be members of both the Western Carolina and Carolinas conferences: https://www.newspapers.com/article/asheville-citizen-times-lees-mcrae-accep/156918853/. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 03:07, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Removal of "Portal bar" from college American football articles
editGreetings Jweiss11, May I ask why removing "Portal bar" from articles? Like this. Adding the portal improves those articles by providing the reader a topic-related link. Nothing in the MOS says to remove. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 20:09, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- JoeNMLC, thanks for the message. I was going to drop you a note about this. I don't think the MOS provides any guidance on when to include portal links or not, just where to include them if they are included. But we have over 10,000 college football team season articles like 2019 East Carolina Pirates football team, and portals links have never been included on virtually any of them. I'm doubful about how useful most portal links are. The connection between that 2019 East Carolina article and Portal:North Carolina and Portal:Schools is tenuous. Portal:American football is more apt than those other two, but there's also Portal:College football. These college football season articles already have so much tabular content and lots of navbox links. I think adding portal links is generally uncessary clutter. It may make sense to discuss further at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football and get feedback from others. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:26, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, Jweiss11 I agree with your answer and do now understand that adding Portals may not be needed or necessary for those thousands of season articles. I was updating articles at Database reports/Long stubs and saw many of those college football team articles. Thanks again for the feedback. Cheers! JoeNMLC (talk) 01:33, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- JoeNMLC, I see you've gone back to adding portal links on articles like 2024 Auburn Tigers football team. Did you change your mind again about them? Jweiss11 (talk) 18:10, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Woops, sorry I forgot...I may as well skip adding portal to all articles. Moments ago (back from lunch) I just did update 1889 Cincinnati Red Stockings season without the portal. So I just have to re-wire the brain. Thanks for the reminder. JoeNMLC (talk) 18:15, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
editHello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Tagging pages for deletion
editHello, Jweiss11,
I realize that you are a very experienced editor but I'd like to try to persuade you to use Twinkle when tagging pages for deletion, whether CSD, PROD or AFD/CFD/RFD/etc. If you set your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator" then when you tag a page for deletion, the content creator will be notified which is an important step in the deletion process as I'm sure you can understand. You also don't need to blank category pages when you tag them as CSD C1s, just use Twinkle to tag the empty category, the category creator will be informed and, if you maintain a deletion log, the page will be added to your CSD log. Twinkle is so handy for so many other editing tasks, I think you look into it, you'll find it invaluable for tagging problems in articles, welcoming editor, reporting vandals, setting up an AFD discussion, posting warning notices, so many other common patrolling and admin tasks. Please give it a try! Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:07, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
Bert Piggott
editThanks for your additions to that. It appears you are right about the AD date; at least the NCAA football guides I have through 1984 indicate I misinterpreted something in a newspaper article. I had a couple questions about the bio yesterday and tracked down his namesake son, will confirm. Carrite (talk) 16:56, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- One more thing: do you know how to create new categories? I'd like one "Category:Black pro football players of the 1940s". There's a whole set of pioneer players who broke the color barrier that should be sortable. best, —tim ///// Carrite (talk) 17:01, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Carrite, sources years removed can often be a bit inaccurate with dates of AD tenure, among other things. I created Template:North Carolina A&T Aggies athletic director navbox a few years back, so I knew something was up. As for categories, you can create them the same way you create articles. For example, just go to Category:Black pro football players of the 1940s, add appropriate categories that that category should roll up into. However, you might want to get some feedback on the scope and verbiage of this one. I don't believe we have decade-specific categories like this for athletes of any kind. Perhaps a list of pioneering black pro football players would be better? Jweiss11 (talk) 22:52, 8 November 2024 (UTC)

1992 ASU football
editAs regards this diff, I agree with you that the content was not well written/presented, but it was substantively good content and sourced. Rather than simply blanking such sourced material, it would be preferable to copy edit or tag. My 2 cents. Cbl62 (talk) 23:33, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
1894 North Carolina football team
editWhy did you remove the arena name from the Lehigh game? That site was the home of the football team before the stadium was built. Jamesleegilbert (talk) 06:23, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- On 1894 North Carolina Tar Heels football team, "Athletic Grounds" was unsourced, and Taylor Stadium (Lehigh) is about the stadium that was built in 1914. Jweiss11 (talk) 06:28, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Many game sites are unsourced, but I've gone back and added a source. Taylor Stadium was built on the site of Athletic Grounds and uses a misidentified picture as a reference. The picture is of Athletic Grounds and appears in the 1896 Epitome (Lehigh) Yearbook between pages 199 and 200 with the caption, "View of Athletic Grounds During Princeton Football Game, October 6, 1894." Eastern-Western
editPlease go ahead then and edit every single SEC coach's page because it's inconsistent right now. I was just trying to make things consistent between pages because most pages have it listed as east-west and not eastern-western. Rhett8 (talk) 05:06, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- The vast majority of SEC coach and team season articles for the divisional era (1992–2023) have used "Eastern" and "Western" for some time. Some high profile coach bio articles like Saban and Brian Kelly had deviated from that standard at some point, but I just made edits to bring those in line. Roster templates
editHey JW— I'm spending most of my time working on 1920s to 1950s NFL and one thing I'm running into is the lack of a decent template for rosters. The main roster template one sees around lists players by modern positions (cornerback, defensive end, etc.) and what I need is something more one-platoonish, which is the way rosters used to be listed up: Ends, Tackles, Guards, Centers, Quarterbacks, Halfbacks, Fullbacks, the end... When I make lists myself I also usually tag in Punters and Kickers as well and repeat the names on the main position list. Do you have any idea how to make something like this appear from the ether by any chance? best regards, —tim //// Carrite (talk) 01:50, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
- P.S. Fun fact: I never could figure out why centers were so highly valued in old football. The answer is it was a very highly valued defensive position — basically middle guard or a bad ass middle linebacker in schemes of the day. Hash tag Chuck Bednarik. James Carter coaching records

Thoughts on this PROD? I was trying to see if there was somewhere else to put this info but I can't find a suitable merge target at the moment. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 06:04, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
I agree the whole category should be addressed, but my prod was sort of a test case. Is there a substantive reason to remove the prod that would result in your voting keep at AFD with my rationale addressed, or do you just want them covered as a whole? I do not think honorary teams like this should have their own articles when it's only the one outlet's selections, the article has no substance beyond the names, and there's just one source. Perhaps there could be an overall all-time page that tabulates all of the AP's selectees for independent southern teams. Reywas92Talk 07:01, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- This set of articles certainly should be addressed as a whole, and I'm not convinced this subject isn't notable enough to have articles. If these honorary teams were covered by one notable newspaper, they were almost certainly covered by others. Did you look? Note that we have an analogous set of articles at Category:All-Eastern college football teams, created largely by Cumberland Mills and Cbl62. And we have Category:College Football All-Southern Teams, Category:All-Pacific Coast football teams, and slews of similar honorary teams for conferences at Category:College football all-conference teams. Whatever the case, PROD was not right approach, and my mere objection is sufficient to veto it. A better approach would be to open a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football.
