Welcome to WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Several Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Indigenous peoples of the Americas and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

Goals

edit
  • To identify, organize, and flesh out articles about Indigenous ethnic groups, Indigenous individuals, history, settlements, current issues, and other topics pertaining to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Specifically, this Wikipedia can improve and create new articles in areas not covered by the WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America or WikiProject Mesoamerica.
  • To create new articles for notable Indigenous groups, peoples, places, events, laws, ideas, etc.
  • To provide up-to-date, NPOV material about Indigenous peoples.
  • To increase awareness of the many Indigenous language Wikipedias.
  • To get Top importance articles within the project scope to Featured status, starting with Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Scope

edit
  • The Indigenous peoples of the Americas are the aboriginal peoples of North and South America from ancient times to the present day. They include the Precolumbian peoples who lived in the Americas before African and European contact and the descendants of these peoples, including mixed-raced Indigenous peoples, such as the Mestizo, Métis, and others.

As of 7 November 2024, there are 4,139 articles within the scope of WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas, of which 7 are featured and 47 good articles. This makes up 0.06% of the articles on Wikipedia and 0.06% of featured articles and lists, with 0.12% classified as good articles. Including non-article pages, such as talk pages, redirects, categories, etcetera, there are 10,474 pages in the project.

Which contents should an article have?

edit

Specifically for articles about ethnic groups:

  • The meaning and origin of the name, alternative names, especially autonym
  • Population
  • Regions where they live (with a map, if possible): countries, provinces, etc.
  • A history section
  • Details about this people as of modern day, unless they are extinct
    • Society structure, including contemporary government or leadership
    • Economic development and subsistence
  • Culture
    • Language(s)
    • Traditional religion or spiritual beliefs, as well as any adopted religions
  • Famous or notable people
  • External links, in particular ones maintained by members of the particular group

Of course, those are just guiding ideas, consider each case on its own.
