From Proto-Permic *gu̇ž, from Proto-Uralic *künče. Cognates include Finnish kynsi and Tundra Nenets хӑда (xăda).

Permic cognates inlude Komi-Zyrian гыж (gyž) and Komi-Yazva гөж (gåž).
