Etymology 1
editIn view of Aramaic כִיתָנָא / כִיתָאנָא (kittānā) / ܟܶܬܳܢܳܐ (kettānā, “flax; linen”), source of كَتّان (kattān, “flax”), and the derived apparel name Aramaic כִּיתּוּנָא (kittōnā), ܟܝܬܘܢܐ (kettōnā), ܟܘܬܝܢܐ (kuttīnā, kottīnā, “tunic”), noting especially its Classical Syriac byform ܟܘܬܘܢܐ (kuttōnā, kottōnā), if the semantic difference from linen to cotton is surmountable, a receival from an Aramaic dialect with an emphaticized byform corresponding to Ugaritic 𐎖𐎉 (qṭ, “flax”) is expected in spite of lacking attestation of the needed form, given that the Western Aramaic dialects in the area of former Ugarit are generally unattested.
