editUncertain. Possibly from Arabic قُبَّة (qubba, “small tower”), from Aramaic קוּבְּתָא / ܩܘܼܒ݁ܬ݂ܵܐ (qubbəṯā). Possibly a widespread Mediterranean wanderwort, perhaps, related also to Latin cūpa (“cask; vat”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewp- (“a hollow”). Cognate with Portuguese Cuba.
