negri
Icelandic
editEtymology
editFirst appeared in writing in the late 18th century. Borrowed from Danish neger, borrowed from German Neger, borrowed from French nègre, borrowed from Spanish negro and Portuguese negro, both inherited from Latin niger (“black”).
Pronunciation
editNoun
editnegri m (genitive singular negra, nominative plural negrar)
Usage notes
editHistorically not a pejorative term; once the most usual term for black people, corresponding to English negro or coloured. The word is now more often considered derogatory or offensive, and has come to be equated with English nigger. It continues to be used in a generic way by some, especially older people.
