- inflection of viens:
Lithuanian
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *aiˀnas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óynos. Baltic cognates include Latvian viêns, Latgalian vīns, Old Prussian ains. Indo-European cognates include German eins, Latin ūnus, Russian оди́н (odín), Polish jeden.
The initial v- is typical for East-Baltic cognates and plausibly comes from an undetermined particle; various theories suggest Lithuanian *visų- (“all”) (genitive plural)[1] or Baltic *ve / *vi- (“particularly”), from Proto-Indo-European *wi- (“apart, separately”).[2]
