History

[edit | edit source]

Launch

[edit | edit source]

200 trial units were released as early as 1978, with a full launch in 1979 which was met with demand for the system outpacing supply.[1] While shortages of far more important items were common in the communist Polish People's Republic,[2] demand induced game console shortages were also present in the United States around this time as well.[3]

Legacy

[edit | edit source]

The system was discontinued around 1984.[1] About 100,000 units had been produced.[1]

Technology

[edit | edit source]

The system was based on the General Instrument AY-3-8500.[4]
