House of Bordziłowski
The House of Bordziłowski (Belarusian: Бардзілоўскі, romanized: Bardziloŭski, Lithuanian: Bardzilauskas, Russian: Бордзиловский, romanized: Bordzilovskiy, Polish: Bordziłowski) is a family of previous nobility in the Grand Duch of Lithuania, Russian Empire (then Soviet Union), and present-day Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine that originated from Smolensk, Russia.
The shortened variant, Bordziła, was derived from the German name Bardilo. Someone from the noble family likely had a beard, forming the suffix "bardaz" from Proto-Germanic "bardǭ;" also means axe when forming "bardilaz" or "bardilǭ." When the surname was Slavicized to Bardilowski/Bardilouski/Bordilovski, it was also Ruthenianized, during the 14th century, to make it sound like a "dz" in the Ruthenian language (later Belarusian) and due to nobility. This includes other Balto-Slavic languages.
The noble family was part of the Bialynia coat of arms. In the early 16th century, the Harbuz noble family jointed with the Bordziłowski noble estate; Iwan Bordziłowski, (later Harbuz-Bordziłowski) was the patriarch of the estate in the village of Bardily. He was a boyar from Smolensk, who claimed the Bardily village in 1523. The noble family then was part of the Nobility of Mogilev Province.
