The Wanted

The Wanted are a British-Irish pop boy band based in London. The group comprises Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes. The band's debut single "All Time Low" reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in August 2010. Their debut studio album The Wanted was released on 25 October 2010 and charted at number 3 in the UK.

History

2009–11: formation and The Wanted

The Wanted were formed in 2009 through a mass audition,[citation needed] by Jayne Collins, the same woman who put together The Saturdays.[2] They soon started working on their debut album with producers Guy Chambers, Taio Cruz and Steve Mac.[3] They all share a house in South London. Their debut single, "All Time Low", was produced by Mac, and also co-written by Ed Drewett. It was released in the summer of 2010.[4] Upon its first week of release, the song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart.,[5] and remained in the UK Top 40 for 11 weeks.[6] The band's second single, "Heart Vacancy", written by Jonas Jeberg, Mich Hansen, Wayne Hector and Lucas Secon was released on 17 October 2010.[7] The Wanted presented "The Wanted's Best Brit Boys Top 20" on August 23 on the 4Music channel.[8] In November 2010 the band opened up the Christmas song list for 4Music. The band confirmed that their debut album would be self titled and it was released on 25 October 2010.

The Wanted announced in November 2010 that they will be having a tour for their album. The concerts will be held in Wolverhampton, Nottingham, London, Newcastle, Manchester, Brighton, Cardiff, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Glasgow, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

In November 2010 the group confirmed they had signed a record deal with American label Def Jam and planned on releasing their album stateside at some stage in 2011.[9]

The band performed their third single, "Lose My Mind", on The X Factor on 28 November 2010.[10]

In January 2011, The Wanted performed at the MakeMineMilk gig, in the UK. They agreed to have their photograph on the MakeMineMilk website, with Siva drinking a glass of milk and the rest of them with milk moustaches on.

2011–present: Second studio album

The band started working on their second studio album in January 2011.[11] They are again working with Steve Mac,[12] and the first single from the album, "Gold Forever" is scheduled for release on 13 March 2011,[13] in aid of Comic Relief.[14]

Members

The Wanted consists of five members: Jay McGuiness; Nathan Sykes; Siva Kaneswaran; Max George; and Tom Parker.

Max George

Maximillian Alberto "Max" George[15] (born (1988-09-06) 6 September 1988 (age 36)) grew up with his family in Manchester [16] Before music, he had been a football player with Preston North End and was on the verge of signing a two-year deal with them,[17] whilst he has been a Manchester City supporter since a young age.[18] Previously he was a member of Avenue, a five-piece boy band made up of Jonathan Lloyd, Scott Clarke, Ross Candy and Jamie Tinkler in addition to George. They entered the third series[19] of The X Factor in 2006 and made it to Louis Walsh's Bootcamp. But media reports exposed that Avenue had not strictly adhered to the rules, having been signed by an earlier music X Factor director to a deal. They were banned from participation for having professional representation rather than being specifically formed for the competition.[20][21][22] Avenue admitted they had failed to duly report their engagements and George openly admitted it was "not the X Factor's fault"[23] in the video showing their disqualification in Walsh's office.

With Andrew (Andy) Brown joining as a member of Avenue replacing Jamie Tinkler, the band went on to have some success beyond their X Factor appearances with their debut single "Last Goodbye", reaching number 50 on the UK Singles Chart. They had a follow up release with "Can You Feel It?". Avenue disbanded in April 2009. In 2008, while still a member of Avenue, George appeared nude on cover of British gay magazine AXM in support of cancer research in AXM's "Naked Issue".[24] In December 2010, George started dating actress Michelle Keegan.[25]

Siva Kaneswaran

Siva Kaneswaran (Tamil: சிவா கணேஸ்வரன்) (born (1988-11-16) 16 November 1988 (age 35)) grew up in Ireland with his Sri Lankan father, Irish mother, twin brother Kumar and six other siblings.[26][27] Kaneswaran started modelling at 16 and appeared in various ads and landed a contract with Storm Model Management.

Kaneswaran took part in Rock Rivals, televised in eight episodes between 5 March and 23 April 2008.[28] His brother took part as well. Kaneswaran played the role of Carson Coombs and his brother that of Caleb Coombs. The brothers also appeared briefly in one episode of Uncle Max. The episode "Uncle Max Plays Tennis" aired on 11 July 2008.

Kaneswaran was spotted through his modelling campaigns and recruited as a result for the band.[29]

Jay McGuiness

James "Jay" McGuiness,[15] born (1990-07-24) 24 July 1990 (age 34), grew up in Newark, Nottinghamshire.[citation needed] At the age of 13, McGuiness went to Charlotte Hamilton School of Dance.[citation needed] He has a twin brother[30] and three other siblings.

Tom Parker

Thomas Anthony "Tom" Parker, born (1988-08-04) 4 August 1988 (age 36), grew up in Tonge Moor, Bolton.[citation needed] Tom learnt to play the guitar at the age of sixteen after trying out his older brother's and decided he had a love for music. He then went on to audition for The X Factor but didn't get past the first round. He went to Manchester Metropolitan University and studied Geography. [citation needed]

Nathan Sykes

Nathan James Sykes,[15] born (1993-04-18) 18 April 1993 (age 31), is the youngest member of the band. He grew up in Gloucester with his family.[31] He started singing and performing at the early age of 6. Sykes went to Barnwood C of E Primary School, then received a scholarship for studying at Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, before returning to Ribston Hall High School. All the while, he continued to perform as a child singer winning various competitions including "Britney Spears's Karaoke Kriminals" in 2003, The Cheltenham Competitive Festival of Dramatic Art also in 2003. He appeared on ITV's Ministry of Mayhem in 2004, and won the Door Youth Project's "Undiscovered Youth Talent Contest" held in Stroud, Gloucestershire performing "Mack The Knife".[32] and signed for Live and Unsigned in Bristol in 2008.[33] He was a member of Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra with Alex Macdougall (Dip ABRSM). He married to female actress Miley Cyrus in 2010.

Most notably Sykes attempted to represent UK in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004 held in Lillehammer, Norway. In the British qualifying finals, he sang "Born to Dance"[34] coming 3rd overall, after winner Cory Spedding and runner-up Andrew Merry.
