Someone who told you so must have been clueless. Her surname is just a trivia, practically no one uses "Alomar" and "Redfield" instead of Chris and Sheva. That's including the character's creators (which is important), and the game characters when talking to each other (and literally all the fans, but I'm not even talking about that). As I said, this article could be as well named just "Sheva (Resident Evil)" (the exact phrase which returns just 2 Google News hits, but opposed to 0 for "Alomar (Resident Evil)" because literally no one uses it, again maybe the the clueless so-called 'researchers', one of which would repeatedly write "Westker" instead of Wesker when accusing RE5 of imaginary racism becuase they have no idea about anything - and yet Sheva's article cites this complete nonsense for some reason - and btw, even this bullshit paper refers to Sheva as just "Sheva"). The article as for now is awkward and even misleading (especially since there's another RE "Redfield" - Claire, who is sometimes compred to Sheva and the others). Thank you for Isabelle Eberhardt, "an incredibly unique woman. Eberhardt challenged both gender and racial norms, explored extensively, spoke five language fluently, survived an assassination attempt and became a successful writer before a tragic death in 1904 at the age of 27."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:03, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It was my pleasure. :) I've just found her incredibly fascinating since I first read about her in a book about two and a half years ago. Her Wikipedia article was pretty poor at the time so naturally I had to fix that haha. Freikorp (talk) 05:17, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would also like to thank you for this well developed article on Isabelle Eberhardt. I had never come across her before but agree with you that her life needed to be fully documented on Wikipedia. Well done!--Ipigott (talk) 10:19, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Today, we thank you for "an awesomely stupid film from the Resident Evil franchise"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:18, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Haha you are most welcome. I've loved this film since it first came out, in spite of the fact it's pure silliness. Freikorp (talk) 09:15, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Today, it's DJ AM, "a DJ who had a short but very interesting and tragic life." - sharing the Main page my my DYK #1000 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:11, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Triple Crowns

Hey, are you still doing these?  — Calvin999 10:35, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Heya, yeah I guess so haha since nobody else ever does, that's why I started doing them in the first place. I'll start working on the backlog now. Freikorp (talk) 11:29, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Haha. Thanks.  — Calvin999 11:55, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. User:Freikorp has been reported to the administrators' noticeboard for incidents Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. for repetitive and disruptive editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peacenik162 (talkcontribs) 00:30, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, Peacenik162's attempt to have me blocked backfired severely. Their complaint was dismissed, and they instead received an official warning for edit warring. They ignored that warning, just like they've ignored every other piece of advise they have been given, and accordingly they have been temporarily blocked from editing. That's what happens when you completely trample all over Wikipedia's guidelines then falsely accuse other people of violating them. Better luck next time. Your user name

Considering Freikorps, would you consider changing your name? Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:34, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Beyond My Ken: I must say I'm surprised and somewhat perplexed to see this request. I am well aware of the history associated with the Freikorps. I am of German, Irish, Chinese and Maori heritage (yes, really) and I am fascinated by the history associated with all these peoples. I also have a strong interest in military history. I can only assume this request has something to do with the fact certain Freikorps were associated with the Nazi Party. However, the concept of volunteer Freikorp units dates back to the 18th century. The Freikorps were not Nazis; such a belief is an oversimplification of a complex issue. I'm actually mildly offended by this request as my interpretation of it is that I should be ashamed of my German heritage. I'd be equally upset if I'd picked a username based on Irish heritage that could be tangibly linked to Irish republican groups (A lot of Irish military and political groups are connected to The Troubles in some manner), and you asked me to change that, or if I'd picked a Chinese username that could be somehow connected to the current Chinese government, which as I'm sure you're aware has a pretty poor human rights record. I've been editing Wikipedia for 10 years. I picked the name 10 years ago when I was obviously younger and actually in the army myself, it's not a username I'd register today, though I don't see a major issue with it. Can you explain a bit better what your issue with it is? Thanks. Freikorp (talk) 01:56, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know that you're a Wikipedia of long standing - if you weren't, I probably would have headed directly to WP:UAA instead of here. I can't say that I have as deep an understanding of the history of the Freikorps as you do, but I am aware that they predate the inter-war period. And you are right that to say "Freikorps = Nazi" is a drastic and unsupportable simplification. Nevertheless, in my opinion -- and I'm fully aware that many on Wikipedia would disagree -- "Freikorps" as a concept has been irrevocably stained by the historical connection between them and the Nazis, much as the term "stormtrooper" -- a perfectly reasonable description of a certain kind of shock troop -- is now permanently unusable without bringing up Nazi connotations. (It was no accident that Star Wars chose "stormtroopers" to describe the Imperial troops, the clear purpose was to make it obvious to the audience that they were the bad guys.)
We live in bad times, Freikorp. Every single day I deal with numerous attempts to soften the history of the Nazis, to make current neo-Nazi groups look more palatable, or to burnish the reputation of Holocaust deniers. I don't think that you are one of those people, I think you are a dedicated editor of Wikipedia, but I also think that a name that might have passed muster 10 years ago is, in 2018, less acceptable than it was.
Since you quite apparently don't want to change your name, I will do nothing further. I have no plans to go to UAA, or the noticeboards, or even to continue the discussion here. You have no reason to be worried that I'm going to hassle you in any way. I simply thought that, given the chance, you might take into account the feelings of other Wikipedians and consider a name change. That you didn't is, to my mind, unfortunate, but that's the way it is. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:33, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyond My Ken: I appreciate your honesty and the fact you've contacted me about the issue here. I can see your point about the Nazis having tainted the term. The Nazis tainted a lot of things unfortunately. I would, for example, wholeheartedly support my government bringing in a solid eugenics program. In saying that I feel the need to clarify I don't believe in necessarily preserving the "purity" of any race, as I said I am a mixed-race person, and the last time I looked into the very limited research that gets done on eugenics today it seemed to indicate that our species would be better off if there was more race-mixing. Nevertheless, the Nazis tainted the whole concept of eugenics research with their bullshit ideas about racial purity, so no government is going to bring one in probably for centuries, which is a right shame as far as I'm concerned.
I hate the alt-right, I really do. At this point I'm tempted to waffle into how much I hate them, but I won't. I'm a little hurt by you saying I'm not taking other Wikipedian's feelings into consideration. The fact remains you're the first person who's brought the issue up with me. If multiple people had told me they find my username offensive I would have changed it years ago. The Freikorps have been largely forgotten by history. I'd say at least 9 out of 10 people wouldn't have a clue who they were. When I was a teenager 'Freikorp' was my username for everything; today this is the only place where I still use it. Over the years many people have asked me what the name meant, several have asked me if I was German, but nobody ever asked me if I was affiliated with any kind of neo-nazi group. But i understand the alt-right movement is, unfortunately, gaining a lot of steam. I'd hate people to think I was affiliated with them. Tell you what, I'm OK with you bringing my name up at UAA if you want to. If a consensus is reached that it is offensive I'll happily change it. Before today I've literally never considered that somebody might be offended by it. Freikorp (talk) 09:31, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just remembered, only one other person on Wikipedia has ever said anything about my username. In awarding me the The World War Barnstar, User:Matty.007 said it was "a suitable and yet fun username inspired by the German inter-war period". Freikorp (talk) 09:43, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia meetup

G'day, Freikorp. I noticed the photo on your User page, taken at the "Wikipedia meetup" in Sydney. I am from Sydney myself, and I would be interested to know about events like that. Are they open to general editors, or just a group of friends? If they are open, can you tell me how I can find out when and where they will be held?--Gronk Oz (talk) 13:48, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gronk Oz, and thanks for your message. They are most certainly open to all editors. You can keep track of what's happening in the way of Sydney meetups by watching the page Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney. The January 2018 meetup, where that photo was taken, was actually the first meetup in Sydney for quite some time. We were hoping Sydney meetups would become a regular thing again though, as they apparently were a couple years ago. No one is 'in charge' of organising the meet-ups so at this stage I have no idea when someone will propose another one. Feel free to propose one yourself and just post it at that page. :) Freikorp (talk) 22:16, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks for that, @Freikorp: I have added that page to my Watchlist, and added the category "Wikipedians in Sydney" to my User page. It would be nice to meet some people in person.--Gronk Oz (talk) 02:45, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Daft Club cited reference

I hate to mention this, but that book appears to lift its wording directly from lines in the Daft Club Wikipedia article (and related articles). As I mentioned before, the information about the service shutting down was added as firsthand knowledge — a wiki editor noticed the Daft Club site stopped working back in 2003, and added the info to the wiki page. I leave for it to you to determine how to handle the use of the book as a source. jhsounds (talk) 02:26, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Well-spotted. Obviously I'd prefer if they hadn't lifted the information from Wikipedia as per WP:CIRCULAR. However, personally I don't have a problem with it in this case as we both know the information is completely accurate. The information cited is not used to say anything controversial or that is ever likely to be challenged in itself, and whether they lifted it or not it has been published by an established and reliable source. I'm happy to leave it as is. :) Freikorp (talk) 03:38, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Purple Barnstar

The Purple Barnstar
I can think of no one on this entire site who deserves this barnstar more than you do. The fact that you endured months of belligerence and borderline harassment at both of Jill Valentine's FAC's and the later peer review, and that you never once lost your cool—I'm in awe! Bravo! I've been depressed about how the whole saga ended, so I've taken it upon myself to adopt Jill Valentine. I'm nearly done with the article, and hope to renominate it at FAC in a couple of weeks. ;) Homeostasis07 (talk) 01:54, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much, and thanks for letting me know about the upcoming nomination. After how I was treated and the stress I suffered as a result I'm still not willing to work on the article again myself at this stage, but I'm very happy someone else has taken over the project. Best of luck with it; unfortunately as one person has made it their mission in life to make all the article's nominations as difficult as possible you're going to need all the luck you can get I'm afraid. DYK for Prison education

On 30 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Prison education, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in the United States, it is estimated that for every dollar spent on prison education, $4 to $5 is saved due to decreases in recidivism? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Prison education. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Prison education), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Sydney meetup

Hi Freikorp. I'm contacting you because I understand you attended the most recent Sydney meetup in January. I'm a Wikimedian from Perth, and a member of the Perth meetup group. I will be visiting Sydney on the weekend of 26-27 May, and I'm interested in organising a meetup. Are you available to attend? I'm assuming that the preferred time would be the Saturday evening (26 May), but I could also make it earlier in the day, or on the Sunday during the day. If there's enough interest, I'll create a new page and ping a few other Sydney-based editors. Bahnfrend (talk) 12:37, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the late reply Bahnfrend; I got distracted then forgot this comment was here. Yes I'll be free that weekend and would be happy to attend if an event is arranged. Saturday evening or Sunday day would be preferable with me. :) Freikorp (talk) 05:25, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Prison Education

Hello Freikorp:

I've finished going through the Prison education article after the work done by HLHJ. I see that you are getting some suggestions from other editors. When it happens I'm sure the peer review will be helpful. Because of its world-wide scope it's a massive undertaking to put an article like this together. Good luck moving forward.

Thanks a lot I appreciate it. Freikorp (talk) 22:46, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Death of Ms Dhu

On 20 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Death of Ms Dhu, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a coroner's inquest into the death of Ms Dhu found that she suffered "unprofessional and inhumane" treatment by police and "deficient" treatment by hospital staff? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Death of Ms Dhu. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Death of Ms Dhu), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Saumarez Homestead

Thanks for the kind note - alas, I can't take credit for it! The New South Wales State Heritage Register has been released under a CC-BY license, allowing us to use its wealth of information about historic NSW sites. Kerry Raymond has created a wikifier-thingamajig which makes it easy to generate articles (or parts of articles) from the SHR material (as she did previously in Queensland), and we're just starting to be able to roll it out this week. Some of the articles are more useful than others, and I've been making judgment calls about how much to use in merges where we've already got an article, but Saumarez is a great example of one of their entries providing a wealth of information that would take an immense amount of work to replicate on our own. DYK for James Francis Dwyer

On 31 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article James Francis Dwyer, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that before becoming a successful writer, James Francis Dwyer was sentenced to seven years in prison for forgery and uttering? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/James Francis Dwyer. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, James Francis Dwyer), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Yeah not really interested hey. I don't even remember creating it to be honest. If it's not helpful just delete it, though personally I don't understand what the harm is/why it's worth the effort to get rid of it. Anyway have a nice day. Freikorp (talk) 10:53, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Freikorp, I've opened a peer review on Mount Mazama. I'd appreciate any additional suggestions you have regarding the prose, comprehensiveness, or images, among others. Thanks! ceranthor 21:09, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done. :) Freikorp (talk) 03:49, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help with the GAN reviews. I have a lot of respect for you as an editor/contributor and it is always great to work with you. Aoba47 (talk) 20:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Aoba47. The feeling is mutual; I really love how you work on articles that nobody else probably ever would take an interest in. I feel like I do the same, though not to the same level haha. I'm continuously amazed at how many articles you manage to nominate. :) Freikorp (talk) 02:14, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great work with adding all of the Africa information to the article. I will look through the article again later in the week and provide any additional comments if that is okay with you. I will mostly focus on prose, and leave the discussions of the scope to the other reviewers that have already raised those points in the FAC. Aoba47 (talk) 19:14, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Aoba47: Also I'm planning on going through the source focusing on Lebanon that you provided tomorrow; I've just finished looking through the sources Squeamish Ossifrage suggested. Freikorp (talk) 11:21, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Aoba47. As you may have noticed the Prison education FAC was closed, however, I've nominated it for peer review. If you're still interested in providing comments on it you can do so there. See Wikipedia:Peer review/Prison education/archive2. Incidentally I've managed to get that source you recommended using from Resource Requests this morning though I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I'll start reviewing your current FAC now. :) Freikorp (talk) 03:44, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for the ping. I will look through it when I have the time (I will try to offer prose suggestions and maybe provide additional resources). Good luck with the peer review! Aoba47 (talk) 03:55, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiCup

I regret that as a WikiCup judge I have had to disallow your submission of Lucienne's Quest as a GAR in Round 3 because it was not completed or nominated before the close of the round on June 28th. I see that this may be critical as to whether you proceed to the next round or not, but it would not be fair to allow you to claim the points if it meant that another contestant was eliminated as a result. We are currently doing some extra checks. If you do proceed to Round 4, you can claim for the GAR in that round. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:37, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmhiraeth: No worries, I'm not too fussed if I progress or not, it's all just for fun really. :) Freikorp (talk) 11:52, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Hi, I just signed up to wikipedia and hopefully i'm posting this in the right place. I saw that you recently edited FF:TSW and thought you might be the person to approach with a possible correction. At the top of the movie's page, it's mentioned that The Spirits Within "remains the most expensive video game-inspired film of all time", however I don't think this is the case anymore, as the Warcraft movie's budget was $160m. Unless I'm missing something? SirIcarus (talk) 20:38, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SirIcarus. Thanks for bringing this up. I've looked into it and you're right, the article does need to be updated, however it appears the Prince of Persia film cost even more than Warcraft. I've found a reliable reference that Prince of Persia is the most expensive film based on a video game and have updated this at the article. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. :) Freikorp (talk) 23:23, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for that. I've been having second thoughts about my correction, as I'm not sure how these things are best calculated. FF:TSW was made in 2001, whereas both Prince of Persia and Warcraft were released much more recently. Adjusting for inflation might change the results, but perhaps I'm just overcomplicating things. SirIcarus (talk) 23:46, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, nevermind. Adjusted for inflation, The Spirit Within's budget would have been approx $168,777,807 in 2010, when Prince of Persia released. So PoP is likely still the most expensive. Though it doesn't help that the figures vary so much depending on where you look. Imdb says PoP cost $200m. A google search popped up $185m at the top and PoP's wikipedia article says it cost $150-200m. SirIcarus (talk) 01:11, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've a favour to ask. I'd very much appreciate your taking at a look at Sandringham House. I guess that the subject matter may not be of any great interest however, and if a country house guide is just too far beyond your boredom threshold, I'll quite understand. KJP1 (talk) 21:28, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KJP1. I've been a bit pressed for time of late, but I'd be happy to make time take a look if you have the time to comment on my current peer review. Let me know if you're interested. Have a nice day. :) Freikorp (talk) 04:36, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I'd not realised Mrs Dhu was a two-for-one offer! I'll happily have a look at Prison Education. I should say, without having read it in depth, my gut feeling is that the topic is very broad. The historical/geographical span is enormous and even in summary style, you have given yourself a huge amount of ground to cover. But I'll certainly take a look. KJP1 (talk) 21:43, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KJP1: Oh, sorry I'd forgotten who had commented on that FAC. I'll take a look at your FAC later today, and feel free to contact me again for another review. :) Freikorp (talk) 02:57, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! All the best. KJP1 (talk) 08:50, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your triple crown noms

Hey! Would love to help process your Triple Crown noms as you've been doing it for everyone else. Wanted to check with you to see what process you normally go through so I can apply it to yours. Nomader (talk) 15:06, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Nomader. Thanks so much for offering to do this; I was starting to wonder if my nominations would ever be processed haha. Well in answer to your question, the DYK checks are the easiest, especially when they are supplied. I just check the links provided in the nomination table. People seem to either link to the actual DYK nomination or the credit for the DYK being given on their talk page. I find both of these acceptable; I have chosen the latter. With the GANs and FACs I also check the links provided to see the nomination. It's a requirement that the person worked significantly on the article (rather than just a fly-by nomination). Normally you can tell if the nominator worked on the article by skimming the nomination, however if there's any doubt obviously this can be checked with the article's revision history statistics. Also the person doesn't actually need to have initiated the nomination, they just have to be a major contributor, I just find in 98% of cases they are also the nominator. Let me know if you have any questions. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 07:55, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Nomader. Just wondering if you had any questions or needed any more info on this. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 00:38, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, no questions! I'll be taking care of them today finally, work is just crushing me on some deadlines. :) Nomader (talk) 13:49, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Haven't processed your Australian one because your DYK, Polyester Girl, doesn't have a WP:AUSTRALIA tag on its talk page. I've left it there just in case you want to edit it. :) Nomader (talk) 17:41, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nomader. Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for processing the other nomination. I added the project Australia tag to Polyester Girl, but have decided to change the DYK nomination to something that already had the tag on it anyway. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 23:39, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! MotherJones controversy

Hi,

I added a section to the wiki page of MoJo, referring to their recent article, in which they clearly opt against the freedom of speech. You deleted my contribution entirely, with no reason stated. Was my text so bad, that you found no salvageable text in it?

The article in question: edit

I'd appreciate your feedback on the topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.11.143.125 (talk) 07:41, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and thanks for your message. Contrary to your message, however, I did not give 'no reason' for deleting your addition; I clearly stated my reason was removing original research. I am going to try to explain why I removed it in more detail. Firstly, you've created an entire sub-section of an article entitled 'Controversy', yet the only source you've cited is MoJo's own article. If a section is titled "Controversy" it needs to filled with reliable sources of other people who have criticised MoJo, rather than just their original article and your interpretation of it. Please read WP:OR. You'e also gone out of your way to point things out to the reader, yet have provided no sources. For example, you state "The proposed solution is multi-pronged" and "this is unclear, as that would be outright censorship"; you'd need a source for that interpretation, and even then you'd need to attribute the opinion to someone and make sure it adheres to guidelines on due weight. Also your post contained numerous formatting issues (for example, see MOS:N'T) but that could have been easily fixed on its own and is not why I removed the information.
Using only the original MoJo article, you can't build a section like this. The only thing you can say using only the original article would be something like "In September 2018, Mother Jones published an article on XYZ", but even that would not be allowed as per WP:NOTNEWS. This is an encyclopedia article. It is supposed to cover the broad history or Mother Jones, not give interpretations or coverage ever time they publish an article. If you want to write entire paragraphs based on your interpretation on one article, you should start a blog. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. I hope this clears up any confusion. Have a nice day. Damien Linnane (talk) 09:32, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's Sheva, not Alomar

Unlike Wesker (who is "Wesker" and not "Albert"), it's Chris and Sheva (like the same with Claire, Ada, Rebecca, Barry, etc.). The word 'Alomar" is spoken only once or twice in the game ("Sheva" all the time - literally non-stop), designers talk about "Sheva", reviewers talk about "Sheva", and so forth, it's just Sheva for everyone and always expect maybe the oputsider 'racism/sexism researchers'. Just compare, for example: https://www.google.pl/search?biw=1920&bih=938&tbm=nws&ei=nL7mW4jAIMSTsAeHi6CwCw&q="Chris+and+Sheva" vs https://www.google.pl/search?biw=1920&bih=938&tbm=nws&ei=rL7mW6vyJM_1kwWtpZuIAg&q="redfield+and+alomar" (links are broken here so you need to copy and paste them, over 100 times more popular on Google News). --SNAAAAKE!! @SNAAAAKE!!: I understand the term Sheva is used much more frequently than Alomar, but that doesn't change the fact the Alomar is her last name. As per MOS:SURNAME, that's how we format names on Wikipedia. It's exactly the same for film plots. I was told to change all the instances of 'Chris and Sheva' to 'Redfield and Alomar' before Resident Evil 5 could become a good article. I'm 100% they would have brought up the issue of last names at the FAC if they hadn't already been formatted properly. Damien Linnane (talk) 11:29, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and btw - I've created and written this article (Sheva's) in first place. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 11:49, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
