Introduction

Vikram Goyal is an Indian product designer[1] and entrepreneur known for his contributions to design and traditional craftsmanship[2][3] such as the repoussé technique. He is the founder of Viya[4][5] and Vikram Goyal Studio[6][7].

Education

Goyal grew up in New Delhi[8]. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from BITS Pilani[9]. Goyal later earned a Master’s degree in Development Economics from Princeton University[10].

Career

Goyal began his professional career in finance, working at Morgan Stanley, New York[11] and later in Hong Kong[12]. In 2000, he returned to India[13] and co-founded Kama Ayurveda[14], an Indian skincare and wellness company. In 2003, Goyal along with sister Divya started Viya Home[15], a home decor brand and design studio that specialises in handmade furniture and objects using traditional Indian craft techniques[16].

His works are recognisable for their use of brass and bronze, often designed in collaboration with artisans from various Indian craft traditions[17].

In 2018, Goyal participated in a group exhibition at The Sculpture Park at Madhavendra Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur[18]. In 2019, he exhibited at the 15 Years Retrospective at Bikaner House[19][20], New Delhi. He has also held solo exhibits at the India Art Fair, New Delhi, in 2023[21] and 2024 where he showcased his brass sculptural furniture and objects made in the repoussé technique, including pieces such as ‘Silken Passage’[22]. Since April 2023, he has been represented at Nilufar gallery, Milan[23]. Goyal has also held a solo exhibit at PAD London[24][25] in October of the same year and again in 2024[26].

Goyal is a patron of The Elephant Family, a UK based charity chaired by HRH Prince Charles, which raises funds and awareness for endangered Asian elephants[27].

Awards and Recognition

Goyal is the recipient of two International Design Awards by Elle Decor India, one in 2009[28][29] and another in 2013[30]. He was also awarded the AD 100 Award for three consecutive years in 2019[31], 2020[32] and 2021[33].

Published works

In 2021, Goyal published a coffee book titled “Shringara of Shrinathji”, written by Amit Ambalal. The book features a collection of Nathdwara paintings[34] owned by his late grandfather, Gokal Lal Mehta.
