Lisa Mishra is an American singer, songwriter and actress.[1] She is best known for her reprise version of the song Tareefan in the 2018 Indian film Veere Di Wedding.[2] Since then, she has worked on songs like 'The Wakhra Song' from the 2019 film Judgementall Hai Kya,[3] 'Nadaaniyaan' in the film The Sky Is Pink and also the party-anthem 'Chandigarh Mein' from Good Newwz.[4]
Now, with a series of lauded independent singles like ‘Sajna Ve’, ‘Aa Mil’ and ‘Rider’ under her belt, and with the release of her debut full length album 'Sorry, I'm Late' that she has composed and written - Lisa Mishra is on an undeniable upward trajectory that vows to cement her status in the music scene. Moreover, she also steps beyond her music career with her debut as an actress in the series 'Call Me Bae' (2024)[5], produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.
Early life
[edit]Mishra was born in Berhampur, Odisha and raised in Chicago. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois[6] with a double major in economics and religion[7] and has a research background with both the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Pluralism Project at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[8] She started her own YouTube channel in 2007 when she was 13.[9] Her first studio experience was while lending vocals on the track "All We Got" on Grammy-winning album "Coloring Book (mixtape)" by Chance the Rapper.[9] Lisa was also credited on 'I Love You So Much' by DJ Khaled ft. Chance the Rapper and 'Single No More' by Chance the Rapper as a songwriter and vocalist.
Career
[edit]In 2017, Mishra collaborated with Jamila Woods to create the theme song of the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls.[7][10] On 19 May 2018, she uploaded a video on her Instagram handle singing a mashup of the Hindi song Tareefan and Let Me Love You. The mashup caught Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s attention, and Mishra was subsequently flown down to India where she recorded and shot for the reprise version of the song for Veere Di Wedding, along with the other stars.[11]
In 2019, Mishra signed with VYRL Originals, part of Universal Music India for non-film music.[12][13] In May 2019, she collaborated with composer-singer Vishal Mishra on 'Sajna Ve.'[14] Mishra has also sung on 'Running Back To You,' an uptempo dance/house record by Goa based producer and DJ Anish Sood released in February 2020.[15]
Her debut album 'Sorry, I'm Late' released by the artist in May, 2024 is a deep dive into Lisa’s journey with a unique blend of Indian and Western pop.[16] It is a collection of stories decidedly rooted in the female experience exploring themes of loneliness, love, loss, anger, and redemption. With this project, Lisa takes centre stage as a bonafide songwriter, with composition and lyrical credits throughout the project along with contributing towards music production and video direction.
