Johannes Hieronymus KapsbergerGiovanni Girolamo Kapsperger – He was born most probably in Venice, to a venetian mother, and lived most of his adult life in Rome, where he died. In his publications, it's the Italian(ized?) form of his name that is used. —capmo (talk) 21:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC) —capmo (talk) 21:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Grove Dictionary only gives these two forms; the Latin form would not be too different from the German one, with the exception perhaps of his surname Kapsberger being also translated. —capmo (talk) 06:12, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well that settles it. The Latin name wouldn't be used for any composer later than 1600. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:27, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Grove entry begins with the following: "Kapsperger, Giovanni Girolamo [Giovanni Geronimo; Kapsberger, Johann Hieronymus; ‘Il Tedesco della tiorba’] (b ?Venice, c1580; d Rome, Jan 1651). Italian composer, lutenist, theorbist and guitarist of German descent." —capmo (talk) 06:16, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are jumping to conclusions

[edit]

A preface to one of Kapsberger's works claims that his father was a "colonello" in the service of "casa d'Austria". This is referring to the House of Habsburg. At that time, the Holy Roman Empire extending from Germany to Northern Italy was still intact. Therefore one cannot make the conclusion that Kapsberger is of Austrian origin.

According to Coelho [[1]], Kapsberger was born in Venice and his first work was printed in Venice. That's probably why the Italian wiki thinks his mother might be Venetian (though there seems to be no source for this claim). Still, this is not "nothing is known about". -- 2003:E5:1706:F628:8DE6:F7A4:8949:D5EB (talk) 16:20, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
