Why is this in Wikiproject christianity?

[edit]

What does this have to does this article have to do with Christianity? IRWolfie- (talk) 09:04, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Examples

[edit]

The examples are pretty poor, they appear mostly to be fringe views like that the free market, New Age Spirituality and soccer are secular religions when their main articles make no mention of it. IRWolfie- (talk) 09:22, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Point taken: Have weeded, and (hopefully) improved. Jacobisq (talk) 11:04, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you have the ISBNs at hand I can tidy up the references. I'm surprised there is no mention of communism as a secular religion, I think, for example, Christopher Hitchens viewed communism as being as dogmatic as religion. Edit: oh wait there is. IRWolfie- (talk) 11:22, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe Confucionism should be here. pony in a strange land (talk) 06:17, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Original research?

[edit]

This article fails to provide a single scholarly secondary reliable source that actually defines the term "secular religon", but it still dives right into providing a lot of examples of what it claims to qualify, consistingly without providing any sources that mentions the specific term "secular religion". I suspect this article qualifies for a deletion, and I will nominate it if the most basic terms in the lead haven't been sourced in a very short time. --Saddhiyama (talk) 22:17, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the worst WP:OR-crud, that is claims supported by sources not mentioning the term "secular religion". What remains is claims where the cited source does indeed explicitly mention the term "secular religion". However it seems that the term used in most of the sources is exclusively without any definition, and almost always in passing, which, together with the complete lack of scholarly sources actually defining the term (Google Scholar doesn't come up with anything), leads me to wonder whether this term is actually worthy of an article on its own, and whether it shouldn't be merged with a related article like Secularism. --Saddhiyama (talk) 09:55, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work. bobrayner (talk) 13:58, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The merge in from political religion has also, hopefully, addressed some of these issues. Klbrain (talk) 13:25, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant with atheist state?

[edit]

Much of this article appears to be original research and to lack supporting sources. Perhaps a merge into atheist state would make sense? —PaleoNeonate10:42, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm maybe my initial impression was erroneous, although by the few citations that appear to directly address the topic, they seem to be about specific types of totalitarian ideologies. —PaleoNeonate10:46, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Feminism as a secular religion

[edit]

Feminism is mentioned in the intro but as the article stands isn't mentioned specifically in the main article. Probably needs at least a paragraph to rectify this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.85.206.169 (talk) 06:01, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This article looks like OR...

[edit]

...and is actually making a point (all political ideologies are forms of religion) that is quite fringe. There might have been some secular religions (ie not involving Gods or other supernatural beings) but claiming that capitalism or communism is a religion, looks far fetched. I have searched some of the sources, and I havent retrieved the phrase "secular religion". Definition at intro is also pretty problematic. Any communal belief system is a form of religion? Hm... Friends, can you help please? Cinadon36 05:57, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cinadon36 I've added requests for citation for questionable statements in the introduction. Squoop (talk) 11:11, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What about "State Shinto"?

[edit]

Before 1945, there was a form of Shinto which has since come to be called State Shinto. This term was invented by U.S. authorities to distinguish what was allowed from what was no longer allowed. There is a Wikipedia article on this subject. Should there be anything in this article which summarizes what is discussed in that article? Itinerantlife (talk) 00:32, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
