ENERGY SAVING STOVES (MAJIKO BANIFU)

[edit]

This is the simple conservative stove used in the household for cooking, as the improvement from the traditional three stones stoves (mafiga matatu) and charcoal coocking stoves. It reduces deforestation by minimizing pressure on forest resources for firewood and charcoal fuel over harvesting, reduces harm to health and the environment, locally and globally [1] It is cheaply built indoor or outdoor with a very minimum fire wood consumption, low heat wastage and lower smoke release compared to the traditional three stones stoves(mafiga matatu) hence economical, health and environmental control [2] For survival human being needs food ;cooking as one of the food preparation method which is unavoidable has led to the call for fuel use /consumption where electricity, gas, kerosene, charcoal, fire wood, paper briquette is commonly used. In Town and villages there is high use of charcoal and fire wood respectively as fuel in cooking stoves.

IMPORTANCE

[edit]

Women empowerment tool: the use of this new technology will provide solution to the most challenge of women and girls where In most of the households women and girls are the mostly involved in cooking hence they are the main users and collectors of charcoal and firewood where travel very far looking for the fire woods which reduce their economomic perticipation ,community building activities, eductional attainment example the girls schools drop out and other health risks and wellbeing example of rape are high, sometimes they are exposed to hostile animals and snakes which leads to death [3]

Climate change mitigating tool: this saving stoves plays big role in minimizing pressure on harvesting of trees for charcoal and firewood which has been a great climate change contributing factor, where if deforestation occurs in large continuous areas, the rainfall may be decreased, due to changes in evapotranspiration, runoff and local climate [4]

Health improvement in the house holds: due to high smoke released from the traditional three stones stoves many women in the households were affected with health effect of wood burning ie indoor and outdoor wood smoke pollution which has been linked to cancer, asthma and other serious health [5]

Poverty reduction and development tool: energy saving stoves can significantly contribute to improvements in the quality of life of rural people with potential benefits to the surrounding environment where significant input from local users and proper distribution strategies is highly recomended [6] Also this will be sustainable legal environmental friendly business where man and women can have knowledge and generate income by earning obtained from building this stoves to other household or making other types and selling them to the market compared to the illegal charcoal business where they spend most of time and energy and still end up in the risk of being caught by forest police for illegality or pay fine <ref>" Energy performance of wood-burning cookstoves in Michoacan, Mexico",2008 </Víctor M. Berruetaa>

EFFECIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS

[edit]

Lower fire wood consumption: there is small fire wood entrance which minimizes the number of fire wood use compared to traditional three stones stove (mafiga matatu) which has all three entrances hence this is the main deforestation pressure control .

Multiple cooking plates (time and energy saving): it has two cooking holes at the top, smaller one at the left and larger one at the right which allows cooking from two utensils also the heat energy is well spent instead of heat loss in traditional three stones(mafiga matatu)hence minimize the time needed to cook each one .

Improved health and tidiness: the smoke pipe /chamber at the side traps the smoke and directs it outside the room hence reduce smoke pollution effect to the user and leaves the room clean.

Good heat circulations and lower wind effect: since its well built and covered all sides left with only one fire wood hole hence efficiency, compared to the traditional three stones stove (mafiga matatu).

BUILDING REQUIREMENTS

[edit]

They are constructed indoor or outdoor, it uses bricks, cement, small iron sheet ,used 2 pots(chungu)of different sizes depending on cooking utensils bottom/base size to be used, they may be cemented or well covered with mixed soil to avoid rain effect.

CHALLENGES
[edit]

It involves some primary cost at construction; it needs expert to demonstrate to the community how it’s built and consultation, indoor built stoves are mostly are not stationary (fixed) with smoke pipe passing through the wall hence bore hole in wall, depends on fire wood.
