I noticed your coming work on that article and was wondering whether you would be interested in producing articles on the other township-level divisions (towns, townships, subdistricts, and more) in mainland China. If you wish to join, sign your name here. Thanks much—Xiaoyu: 聊天 (T) 贡献 (C) 03:42, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi XiaoYu, I've never edited a talk page before so hopefully this is the right way to do it and you'll receive a notification that I replied to your message. I'm currently based in Beijing. I'll tell you what I know and what I don't know about the towns I've been to.

What I know about them: 1) I know their English and Chinese names 2) I could place them on the map 3) I've seen their main landmarks 4) I took lots of photos 5) I know how you get there

What I don't know: 1) I don't have GPS readings for most of the places I've been to 2) I don't know how to get suitable references for anything that I say in the article.

I've read the guidelines and I'm still not sure whether what I know is actually enough to create these articles.

Coordinates can be found when typing in the address of the place in a programme like Google Earth. Best use Chinese, though. —Xiaoyu: 聊天 (T) 贡献 (C) 15:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ah ok so not having at least one reference is not a problem then? because i read the guidelines and it says you need at least one reference. i didn't know that rule wasn't strict. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Azylber (talkcontribs)
Use xzqh.org, the county-level government website (many give introductions to the towns, townships, etc.), or some other source. —Xiaoyu: 聊天 (T) 贡献 (C) 18:42, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be careful about using the coords from the sites you're using. I've been through a handful and some are way off. I've been replacing them with one's I've found using Google Maps. Quiché Airport, Neil Armstrong Airport, Gualaco Airport, Jurien Bay Airport. "Pepper" @ 19:02, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean. But what should we do when various sources agree on the coords and google says they're all wrong? What is the standard way to find a final answer to the question? Azylber (talk) 19:06, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hangul

[edit]

Hi,

Thank you for your recent comment on my revision! I appreciate how you provided "Moscow" as an example to support your argument.

This is something that I found: According to bridgetomoscow.com, the actual name of the city in Russian is "Moscva." The name of the city used to be "Moscov" when it was first found in 1147 and "Moscow" was used because 'Moscov" sound closer to the present-day English pronunciation.

I think this is the key part right here.

Like I mentioned earlier, "hangeul" sounds closer to the present-day English pronunciation than "hangul." Thus, it's more appropriate to use "hangeul" than "hangul." You are right that the official Korean romanization rules give us "Han'gŭl" or "hangeul," and my suggestion is to follow these rules. Why can't we use "hangeul" as an English variant? Is it because "hangul" is more western friendly? I would really appreciate it if someone can provide me with a concrete reason/evidence that why we cannot use "hangeul" as an English variant like "hangul."

Although I understand that romanizing any language can be very difficult one needs to acknowledge that Korean language has been proven to be one of the difficult languages for romanization compared to other Asian languages (Korean government used three different systems of romanization in the past). In 2000, the Korean government officially replaced this McCune–Reischauer system ("hangul") with Revised Romanization of Korean (hangeul), and I believe that it's respectful to follow their struggles for perfection of romanization not for just Koreans, but also for non-Koreans as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maymklee (talkcontribs) 00:23, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stress in Russian

[edit]

Hi, Azylber! Thanks for your note. However, this subject was previously discussed, and several people who cared at the time agreed that showing stresses is not necessary at all as long as IPA transcription is present; the rationale being that the stress marks are confusing to people who are not that familiar with Russian—i.e., the audience which is somewhat opposite of the audience you described under b). Additionally, the stressed spellings are routinely copy-pasted by folks who can't read Russian (or Cyrillic) at all, and they end up in most strange places, such as, and I kid you not, interwiki links. That most certainly counts as damage, albeit minor (and easily fixable) one.

Consensus, of course, may change over time, so my recommendation would be to post your comment on, say WT:RUSSIA or a talk page of other applicable WikiProjects. The reason I reverted is pretty much due to previous consensus—I myself don't really care whether stress is indicated using the stress marks or IPA. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); March 1, 2012; 15:19 (UTC)

Returning to this, could you please make sure that when you show stress, you use actual stress marks (acute above, Unicode U+0301 or HTML ́) instead of accented letters? Here's an example of a correction I've made. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); February 15, 2013; 14:24 (UTC)
Hi Ezhiki, good to hear from you! I'm sorry about that. They look the same, so it didn't occur to me they might not actually be the same character! Sorry. I will make sure I use the proper unicode characters. Azylber (talk) 14:32, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, they are indeed very easy to confuse. I myself only noticed this today even though I've seen you add them to other articles before. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); February 15, 2013; 14:36 (UTC)

messy

[edit]

my talk page was getting a bit messy so I'll answer here. I agree with your opinions, but, in the end, it really doesn't matter. It's (apparently) not worth the time and effort. I'm just doing what I do and have to just let others do what they do. It's unfortunate, but it's the way it is. Back to making articles. Cheers.  :) Wikipelli Talk 01:49, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

yes, it is indeed unfortunate :( I've made a final effort, I left another comment at the REFPERM page (even though the AP right has already been granted) and I've also started a discussion about the ranking at the ranking talk page. Azylber (talk) 08:41, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm not sure getting rid of the ranking page is going to solve all the problems but I think it's a start - at least to have the discussion. <sigh> I don't think that WP will ever be free of "hat collectors". So, like I said, back to doing what we do and hopefully the problem will get to the point where other actions are taken. Common sense and logic usually do win out in the end. I think in this case expediency won. Have a great day! Wikipelli Talk 11:15, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dead people

[edit]

Just so you know in case it ever happens again that you're the one adding a death date to an article, Category:Dead people is not a category tag that ever goes on individual articles; there is always a more specific tag that should be used instead. If you know the year of death, you should add the appropriate tag, such as Category:2012 deaths, and if you don't know the year of death, you should add Category:Year of death missing. — Paul A (talk) 01:18, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the articles on Russia and Russian subjects do not use these punctuation marks in the instance of the first Russian use of a word. I know this is something you have seen on the Russian Wikipedia, but this is something that isn't followed here. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 07:55, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zscout370, and thank you for your message. No, this has nothing to do with the Russian Wikipedia. This what is we're doing on the English Wikipedia: we put stress marks in the Russian name that is given between brackets right after the article title.
This is very useful, due to intrinsic characteristics of the Russian language. In Russian, when you see a word written down, it is impossible to predict which syllable is the stressed one. And if you don't know which syllable is stressed, you also don't know what the pronunciation of each vowel is (in Russian, vowels are pronounced very differently depending on whether or not they are stressed). That is why you will see even on the Russian Wikipedia that the first instance of the title words is always shown with the marks. Because it's the definition.
Of course, on the English Wikipedia we use the English name, so we don't have this issue. But when we provide the Russian name between brackets right next to the title, what we do is we show the stress marks, so that readers know how the word is actually pronounced. This is equivalent to providing the IPA pronunciation of the word, as it is done in many articles, but a much better solution, since not everyone can read IPA, and also you can see the Russian spelling AND pronunciation, all in one.
Hope this helps! Azylber (talk) 08:08, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the only reason why I bring up the Russian Wikipedia is I seen this done a lot over there (I do also edit there, but mostly in my capacity as a Commons admin). I also tried to check the Russian language MOS page and I didn't see anything on there, so what I think could be done is maybe incorporate it? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:11, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And I did revert back to your version with the marks over the Russian words. I think what confused me too was it was just for the lead sentence and not the infobox (but then, similar style as ru.wp). User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:14, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for restoring my edit. And I think you are right that perhaps we should try to add this to the Russian MOS. Azylber (talk) 08:20, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vienna U-Bahn stations

[edit]

Hi: I saw your moves of two Vienna U-Bahn stations on my watchlist, and I see that you have since created Reumannplatz Station. It's great to have another Vienna U-Bahn station article. However, the consistency you are claiming may be less of an advantage than you think; WikiProject Trains has had a guideline of naming stations that are only on a commuter rail or a metro system after the system - hence (Vienna U-Bahn) in the article name. Wien Mitte railway station is the exception because it is multimodal. I have previously raised the issue of whether this convention should be changed at the project, with regard to Paris RER stations, at WT:WikiProject Trains#French stations; can I ask you to go there and discuss it? Personally, I think the usage with parentheses is clearer at least for metro stations (I'm less sure about suburban commuter rail), but I'm deferring to the project on the issue. Yngvadottir (talk) 21:47, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yngvadottir, thanks for contacting me. It's good to hear from people who care about these articles.
When I moved those 2 pages, I took 2 things into account:
  • I added the word Station, which must be present in the name since we're dealing with stations, and I've seen this rule followed in the 10 or so systems I've worked on
  • I turned (Vienna U-Bahn) into just (Vienna) because I will be using the same article for U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations. I will create all these 80 articles, and I think it'd be a really bad idea to have separate articles for U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations.
What do you reckon? Azylber (talk) 22:10, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Pilgramgasse, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to a nonexistent page, or a redirect loop.

If you can fix this redirect to point to an existing Wikipedia page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you also fix the redirect. U-Bahn lines icons

[edit]

You are correct. I did not understand the problem that some U-Bahn stations have other lines without service templates. For consistency lines should therefore be included in all U-Bahn station infoboxes. Thank you for the expanded explanation. Sw2nd (talk) 19:02, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Russian encyclopaedic accents

[edit]

You're more than welcome. Though it's ironic that the majority of WP Russia editors can (correctly) retain accents on cyrillic in lead boxes, but the the majority of RfC editors carries no forward weight on allowing article titles with Asian Latin (Vietnamese or Hawaiian or Maori) scripts to be treated the same as European Latin scripts like Czech or Polish. Your project's editors deserve a barnstar or cookie. Thanks for your kind note. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:20, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please clarify your reversal of updates as this page needs substantial improvement as it stands. Thank you for your time. Research-bergen (talk) 09:07, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. I reverted it because there were a number of things that made your changes look very strange, for example:
  • impossible date of birth (born after he died..?)
  • strange nowiki tags
  • removal of the reflist template
  • messy references section
At that point in time I wasn't sure if it was vandalism or unintended damage, so I rolled it back assuming good faith. Cheers, Azylber (talk) 09:20, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - thank you for your prompt reply. We are new to this but hoping to make positive contributions as have a lot of accurate historical data. We did not notice birth date error. We will amend. Thanks you. We were unsure of how to work with template so removed and dropped in as clean list. Hi, yes I did, but of course in a friendly way. I think if we're going to replace the list, we might as well replace it with a list where the items aren't there just because of template links. If you go through the list you'll see what I mean. I hope TB can tweak his algorithm to sort that out. If he can't, then of course the new list is better than the old one, but I'm hoping he can fix it. Azylber (talk) 21:35, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So, under what does accordionist go?--Mishae (talk) 04:12, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've only just seen your message, sorry! I looked at what you did, I think you've chosen the right one, "musicians", it's the most specific one that there is, because "accordionists" doesn't exist. So I would leave it exactly like you did it, I've just removed a template you added that doesn't exist ("musicians"), as that one got added automatically when you added the "biography" one with the "musician-work-group" flag. Another bot idea

[edit]

Hi, Azylber! I don't know how interested you would be in programming another bot after an intensive workout with Rabotnik, but I've got another idea for you. How about a bot that generates Russian IPA spelling based on a Russian word? Here's how I envision such a bot would work:

  1. Collect all Russian words in the {{lang-ru}} template (you already have this step covered).
  2. Generate IPA using these rules.
  3. Create a list containing a wikilink to the source article, the word being rendered in IPA, and the bot-generated IPA. The lists can be saved into manageable batches of, say, 10–25 items; either onto separate pages or in separate sections.
  4. Human volunteers would then review the generated IPA, marking correct variants and perhaps changing incorrect ones (and perhaps adding stress, if it's missing!)
  5. Once a batch is complete, the bot would transfer the IPA transcriptions back into the articles.
  • Any problems encountered during the last step (e.g., if the lede has been edited between steps two and five) would go onto a log page for additional review.

The way I see it, it's a lot easier to review a batch of several IPA transcriptions than to jump from one article to another and editing them separately, and IPA transcriptions are one thing that we definitely don't have enough of.
Interested?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 15, 2014; 20:05 (UTC)

As you know, I'm not a big fan of IPA :) But I do agree that it is useful for some people.
I also agree with you that I would probably be the right person to help with this, as I've already done most of the work that your new idea would require, and it'd be just building on stuff that I've already got.
Finally, I would also say that it'd be fun to collaborate with you on this.
I must say though that at the moment I'm feeling frustrated by some of the attitudes I've seen in certain people in connection with the approval process of our bot.
Before taking part in any other projects, I want to see the bot approved and finally doing its work. I want to personally supervise the first few hundred edits, to make sure they're perfect. I think at least one of you Russian guys needs to keep an eye on it as well. If any errors do occur, I want to be able to spend all my available wikitime dealing with them.
Then, once everything is fine and we've seen that reason and common sense prevail over bureaucracy and unconstructive attitudes, I will be more than happy to collaborate with you on your new (or other) ideas. Azylber (talk) 00:52, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have to be a fan of IPA to enjoy programming a challenging task :) And it's nothing urgent, of course; just an idea I thought I'd throw up in the air. And of course, if you decide that you don't want to get involved with this one (which would be completely understandable), that'll leave no one else qualified and willing to do the job. (no pressure there...)
As for the RfC, I'm somewhat disappointed, too. It seems that every oppose so far is due to not taking time to look into how the bot will actually operate or not understanding what these stress marks actually are and when they are used. But that kind of thing is a perennial problem with any RfC... Anyway, if the bot gets approved, I'll be happy to help keep an eye on its edits; that's no problem at all. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 16, 2014; 17:57 (UTC)

Name change

[edit]

Hi Azylber,

I'm in the process of trying to change my username. Problem is that the name I want AlanS is currently being used by someone on Italian Wikipedia. So I was informed by the bureaucrats on English Wikipedia I would need to request renaming of that account first before they could possibly change my name in English Wikipedia to AlanS, because if there was some one with a global account of AlanS they couldn't change my name to it. I looked at the user [1] and found out I could possibly usurp them as they have not made any edits since they registered a number of years ago. So I requested a usurpation/renaming at [2]. In the instructions it says 'If it's been seven days, and the procedure has not yet been dealt with, you are encouraged to contact a bureaucrat'. I've found a bureaucrat [3] (I think). The problem is that i don't know if he speaks English at all and I don't speak any Italian. Would you please be able to contact him on my behalf. You're listed as a Italian speaker on the Wikipedia:Local_Embassy. Thank you. Alans1977 (talk) 09:31, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A tag has been placed on Jeremy D. Diamond, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Possible removal of AWB access due to inactivity

[edit]

Hello! There is currently a request for approval of a bot to manage the AutoWikiBrowser CheckPage by removing inactive users, among other tasks. You are being contacted because you may qualify as an inactive user of AWB. First, if you have any input on the proposed bot task, please feel free to comment at the BRFA. Should the bot task be approved, your access to AWB may be uncontroversially removed if you do not resume editing within a week's time. This is purely for routine maintenance of the CheckPage, and is not indicative of wrongdoing on your part. You will be able regain access at any time by simply requesting it at WP:PERM/AWB. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:36, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Lescano (disambiguation)

[edit]

The article Lescano (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This is an unnecessary disambiguation page per WP:TWODABS. A hatnote is sufficient.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Tavix (talk) 19:32, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
