Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken Episode list

[edit]

Why did you revert my changes and completely delete the episode list from main wiki page? I can't even make a separate page for the list, so it needs to stay on the main page. ....DranzerX13 (talk) 06:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cloud's future?

[edit]

In the past months I tried expanding Cloud Strife to cover most of his appearance and real world info. I'm not fit for FAs but I kinda feel like it should be considering the popularity of the character and the fact that his game is FA. Then again, due to my poor prose I don't think I'm suitable for the job so if you feel like it, I leave it to you, Protodrake or PresN since improved a lot of article so quickly. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 03:33, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We’ll look into it @Tintor2:, I have felt for a while that we need to start doing more Featured Article candidacies. Also, may I suggest to you that if there are any articles that could be Good Articles like Rinoa Heartilly, maybe you could nominate that one? Just a thought! Excellent work by the way in all things Final Fantasy VII! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:40, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll give Rinoa a try but first I think that reception section needs some work.Tintor2 (talk) 20:06, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried formatting some refs, trimming stuff from Rinoa's reception among other stuff. Left a request in the guild of copyeditors to prepare it for a review. Feel free to be bold and correct anything.Tintor2 (talk) 20:51, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tintor2: thanks! I might just copyedit it myself at some point as well. Great work! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:57, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tintor2: could you do the two references in the Rinoa article that got clipped? They are making errors now. Thanks again. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:04, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed reference 10 but I can't find the mistake I made with reference 24.Tintor2 (talk) 21:10, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
About Rinoa's actress I have been searching for commentary about her Japanese actress since she is quite famous but I can't find anything. I also remember that Siliconera once had an article were the female members of Square Co. assisted Nomura in developing the character feel more realistic than previous heroines but I can't find it.Tintor2 (talk) 14:48, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, I've just found the commentary in Siliconera about how Tifa's design influence Rinoa.Tintor2 (talk) 14:55, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Amazing!

[edit]

Haha, thanks! I've just been source-hunting for a lot of years and know a few tricks. A good number of those came from doing Google searches like these:

"chocobo" + "dungeon 2" site:archive.org
"chocobo" + "dungeon 2" site:retromags.com

But sure, I'll see if I can find stuff for those other titles you mentioned! It may take me a few days because I'm pretty swamped, but I'm sure there are sources out there. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 23:46, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Aqua (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Barnstar

[edit]
The Square Enix Barnstar

Over the last few weeks, you've done an immense amount of work, bringing dozens of articles that have languished for years with few sources and little content up to a coherent, C-class standard, and in doing so set a new bar for minimum quality for any WPSE article. It's transforming the project from not just one with a ton of GA+ articles, but one where even the obscure subjects have a solid article about them. Amazing work! --PresN 14:09, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dad refs, and extra

[edit]

I've found sources for Dad of Light, and left them on the talk page. They should help fill it out a bit.

Incidentally, if you like, I can give you a rundown on how I find and translate sources, and how I find links. It will probably help in your projects, and allow you to use the refs provided to the greatest effect. --ProtoDrake (talk) 21:15, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ProtoDrake: that would be just about the greatest thing ever! Please tell me how you do it! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:58, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, this will be a long reply, but it's needed. I've had to learn much of how I get sources through trial and error, but now I've got it down to a kind of system. Basically, before starting any project I'm interested in, I look for sources. These may be still extant, but more often in my experience they end up being on dead websites or in a foreign language. When looking for sources, I go through a process of elimination. First, a blanket search that covers extant and mainstream sites in English. Then I look at game pages on those websites in case I missed anything. Sometimes they lose links in the internet aether, so then you need to find old versions of those pages in archive and search their links. Wayback's best for this, as WebCite and Archive.is only archive individual pages. If a source is actually dead, I either find an acceptable alternative or admit defeat, as using a bad source is worse than no source at all. Wayback also archives some surprising texts, and for this you need to search both titles and text contents. I found several interesting features searching in text contents, while titles only get you so far. Space Channel 5 would have been an impossible slog without them.

Once you've exhausted English, I move onto foreign language, which can range from French and German to Chinese and Japanese, or even Korean. As to my knowledge of Asian languages, it's rather scant on a practical level. I've just gotten very good at Google Translate blurb, and picking out some phrases and characters I know from untranslated text on the same subject. For Japanese games, first I look at the Jp Wikipedia page, which can have links and even definite info (it's where I got a lot of the sources for the Tales games). The Japanese page can also give you links to a game's website. This is true for other titles. Same principle with other Asian language Wikipedias (especially Chinese, which can also include its true native title in parenthesis). It can take some digging, but finding the game's native title in other languages is also useful for confirming a regional release. Below are the most common sources I've grown used to using.

  • Native language sites: This can get awkward, but for Western languages they tend to pop up somewhere. In Japanese, your best mainstream bets are Famitsu, Dengeki Online, Game Watch Impress, and ITMedia. Chinese-language is a little dodgy, but Gamer.com is a reputable source. Final Fantasy Awakening is a good example of how I grappled with that.
  • Review aggregate sites: These provide links to reviews obviously, but for older games they provide older URLs which can lead to some of the stuff above. IGN, PALGN, GameSpot and suchlike have changed or vanished over the years, so
  • Wayback Archive: It can be temperamental at times and text scans aren't sorted very well, but it's extremely useful. If you find a link to an old version of a site, or better yet link directly to the game's old site and it still works, you can find all kinds of goodies there. You can use a simple word combination to bring up URLs, or an exact link, or do a search on a partial link to see where it gets you.
  • Other archive sources: If you need to find a specific page you have, then search through the other archive sites. Take care with URLs, as they can change overtime and throw off search engines.
  • MobyGames, SegaRetro (Sega-focused), relevant subject Wiki; not citable obviously, but a better resource for credits and English name versions than something like GameFAQs or IMDB.
  • Speciality sites: Things like Gematsu and Siliconera are the goods when finding stuff on foreign-language titles, as they provide website links and even interview translations.
  • Fan sites: They are useful not only for finding links, but they can also have translations, or original content. In the latter case, I use them directly in the text and they are generally accepted with some obvious exceptions.
  • Original developer websites: They may be dead, or difficult to navigate, but a little experimentation can find you on original game sites, or at a Q&A. My work on Koudelka and Shadow Hearts relied on these for a lot of the info.

Search terms are also very important. If the name just sounds like a common word, I add the game's platform or other elements to narrow the search. I've found, both in English and Japanese, that using a lead dev's name in conjunction with the title of a game yields interesting results. In general, certainly for games within the last twenty years or so, pasting in the name of the game then pasting in "インタビュー" ("Interview" in Japanese) delivers the goods, even if it's a link to an old website that had the dev interviews on their blog. You may need to just search and chance to luck, and it can yield results.

Most importantly, you must go through the pages when you search, and not expect the results to pop up conveniently on the first page. And if there's a relevant piece on a forum, see what you can make of it. It may be a translated interview, it may be a link to a dead site, it may even be comments and info that put you on the right track, but they all help. I found stuff on Lost Odyssey, FF Type-0, multiple Fire Emblems, and a few other titles (gaming and otherwise) I barely remember working on. I've had to dig extremely deep, sometimes going through pages of forum posts, to find something. It pays off about half the time.

Hope this helps! --ProtoDrake (talk) 09:54, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I should give you a barnstar of helpfulness Protodrake! That was extremely helpful, and I will put it to good use! You really do have it down to a system, and I will give it a shot! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:38, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Don't feel you need to be slavishly devoted to it. Treat it as a guideline if you like. By the way, what was that grand edit to my sandbox about? Just curious. --ProtoDrake (talk) 18:44, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And I've done that final request you gave for the Dragon Quest Monsters article. Not a huge amount, but all I could bring together. --ProtoDrake (talk) 19:02, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a million! And I don’t know, on these mobile devices its so easy to accidentally hit a button, I think it reverted everything you ever did to your own sandbox LOL! Sorry about that @ProtoDrake:! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:07, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just a minor thing. About what I mentioned for Alpha and Suisho, I meant that I'd put the refs I found on the talk pages. I've got a lot on my plate at the moment in terms of projects, so that's as far as I was able to go. --ProtoDrake (talk) 22:36, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar 2

[edit]
The Square Enix Barnstar

I literally just gave you one of these a few weeks ago, but I feel more than one is warranted. 3 months ago, I would have said that the Square Enix Wikiproject was, once again, pretty much dead. Nothing nominated in over 6 months, no one working on articles at all, dust gathering on the talk page. Today, largely due to you, over 70 articles have been improved from Start-class or merged, a dozen C-class articles have been improved to Bs, every cleanup tag in the 450+ articles has been cleared, and an entire mini-project around getting over half of our articles to GA+ has begun, with enough active participation and nominations already that it seems a sure thing within another month. It's been an incredible turn-around, and it's pretty much entirely due to you. Way to go! --PresN 02:40, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiDragon Roar!!! This is what I always meant @PresN: when people said I was “gone” or “retired”, I’ll never be gone! I will always keep coming back and pick right back up from where I was. Balance free images?

[edit]

So when checking I noted that all of Sephiroth (Final Fantasy)'s voice actors had free images so I added them all similar to Lara Croft. However there seems to be an issue with Morikawa's image as for some reason it looks quite smaller. Could you give it a look?Tintor2 (talk) 00:47, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I’m going to punt this one! @PresN:? Any thoughts on getting that first image bigger? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed- the image, unlike the other 3, was wider than it was tall. Now using a cropped one that was already uploaded. As long as the aspect ratio is close enough the template will squeeze them for you to make them the same height... except the {{multiple image}} template also claimed it was super-massive? Whatever, fixed now. --PresN 03:40, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both of you.Tintor2 (talk) 15:15, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, talking about Sephiroth, I'm confused with why his article uses a PSP CGI image rather than the concept art by Nomura. I mean, I think almost every character uses Nomura's art regardless of the remake also offering these types of images. Sephiroth himself his own image but I don't know if it's good due to the background. See here. I guess I can't get over in regards to why we shouldn't use Cloud's remake outfit in the infobox considering the article still uses the CGI image in further development. I thought about Tifa's look since she was the most revised but I guess there is no room to put it.Tintor2 (talk) 21:11, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I’d raise the issue on the talk page @Tintor2:, both PresN and myself will see your discussion I am sure, perhaps there is some kind of reason they broke from consistency? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 22:55, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Editing news 2020 #3

[edit]
On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

I just nominated Ryo Sakazaki to GA considering it had been copyedited a while ago and there weren't major edits to the content in ever since. In case you are interested, we could exchange reviews? 343 Guilty Spark

[edit]

Hi there, about a day ago I have revived an article for 343 Guilty Spark, updated it with multiple sources and rewrote most of it. Another editor responded by restoring the redirect, claiming that it does not pass GNG and significant coverage. I noticed that you have been involved with editing that article a long time ago. I highly doubt that it would ever pass GA status, but in terms of sourcing I see it being very close to the Gravemind article, and Guilty Spark in my view is just as notable if not more so then Gravemind as far as the franchise is concerned. Could you have a look at it in its current state and give feedback, particularly on the issue of GNG and significant coverage, because the criteria for meeting these standards appear to be very subjective to me? Reply tool

[edit]
The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

[edit]
  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Next: New discussion tool

[edit]

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Reply tool

[edit]
Graph of Reply tool and full-page wikitext edit completion rates
Completion rates for comments made with the Reply tool and full-page wikitext editing. Details and limitations are in this report.

The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.

  • The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
  • It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.

Research notes:

  • As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
  • There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[2]
  • The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[3] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
  • A large A/B test will start soon.[4] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.

New discussion tool

[edit]
Screenshot of version 1.0 of the New Discussion Tool prototype.

The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[5] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.

Next: Notifications

[edit]

During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

Editing news 2021 #2

[edit]

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Chocobo update

Hello. In case you're not watching the Chocobo page, I've just rattled out the update. It's got as comprehensive a creation and development section as is sensible and sourceable, got the Appearences section properly organized and sourced without bloat, and added some stuff to its reception. Still needs tidying and other bits of work, but the out-and-out false information's been purged (who knew Sakaguchi wouldn't like the concept of a silent, likeable animal companion but want beasts of burden instead, hmm). --ProtoDrake (talk) 15:16, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
